Hey Guys,

I'm Steve and live in Cincinnati, moved down here about 4 months ago after graduating from Michigan for my first job. Gonna be hunting the surrounding wildlife areas this fall.

Hopefully we all have a great season and lets start thinking of team names!

hey steve, my name is scott. i live in mercer county, which is in the middle western part of the state, 5 minutes from the indiana line.it is the flat farmland part of the state with scattered woodlots. i usually hunt the riverbottoms exclusively here though. i am currently in massachusetts working, but i will be taking 5 weeks off from october 24th thru december 1st. i have done this the last few years and it works out pretty well, not a bad time to be home and with nothing else to do but hunt. i was in the contest last year and it is alot of fun, as long as everyone participates. i think as long as everyone gets a doe and we can take a couple of bucks we will do just fine. have you had a chance to scout any of the public lands yet? do you have any trail cams out? i will post some trail cam pics a little later tonight, still at work right now.

you got a couple of nice ones there larry, hope you get a crack at one.since i am away , my hunting buddy takes care of the camera work and some scouting, but when i am home i hunt the rivers during pre rut and rut, it is the only continuous woods around, bucks like to cruise it. got three decent bucks for my area. not many ohio big bucks get shot in my county. hopefully i will get a crack at one of the 2 nine pointers this year.

steve, scott, larry... nice to "meet" you guys.

my name is jim and i live up here in sandusky county. i hunt a lot of public land and some private land in seneca county. each year me and four other guys go down to morgan/perry counties for our november deer camp. we hunt for a week straight in the wayne national forest... and see quite a few big deer. i tend to hunt for meat up here and antlers down there... but ive taken does down there as well. one thing to note, i wont shoot at a buck that i dont think is mature... which is why i havent killed a buck in 3 years. so please dont be dissapointed when i post about passing up bucks. on the other hand, any doe that walks in front of me will have something sharp flying her way. i think its gonna be a good season. seems like we have a pretty diverse team here, which should help i think.
team name: Bucks'N'Backstraps

Those are some nice bucks you got there. I like Bucks'N'Backstraps too.

I've been out to Indian Creek Wildlife Area a few times and have a couple of options for stand sites but I want to get out there one last time. Haven't been seeing a whole lotta sign other than tracks. I'm hunting w/ a climber for the first time this year so I'm gonna be moving around a bit. In the next couple weeks I'm gonna go out and check out Tranquility Wildlife area and Pike State Forest too.

It's gonna be kinda hard for me to get out and hunt the weeknights because I'm just starting work and don't have any vacation saved up this bit. The areas I'm gonna be hunting are all 50+ minutes away from me but I'm gonna get out as much as I can. I'm gonna be hunting Michigan as well this fall when I'm home for the weekends/football games.

So what's everyone on the team hunting with this year? I'll be hunting with my Hoyt Cybertech.

08-27-2008, 08:45 PM
iam old school. using an eagle xl.does anyone think we should have a captain. just asking i have never done something like this before.

mercercountyhunter
08-27-2008, 11:53 PM
we do not really need a team captain. there will be a thread that updates the scores every week and it tells you what each deer entered scored. there will also be a thread that you post a pic of your doe/buck in and you give info about it(date killed, weapon , team name, etc.). you just have to make sure the picture of your deer includes your bow and that you can see the temporary or permanent tag also.
i will be hunting with a bowtech mighty mite, i have had it for about 5 years.

08-28-2008, 11:36 PM
we still have not heard anything from longrifle yet, wonder if we will get an alternate or what. so does bucks n backstraps sound good to everyone for the team name? it gets my vote. if so i think sjastrz needs to change the thread title like the other teams have done, since you started the thread. thanks in advance if you can change the thread title. i cannot wait until october 25th so i can sit in my treestand and get away from everything.
what is the biggest deer you guys have? mine is a 130" ten point that had a couple of broken tines. one day i will join that big buck club, hopefully.

jbrown
08-28-2008, 11:47 PM
that name sounds good to me. i think itll be pretty fitting for our team's deer season results. :mischeif:

my biggest buck is a typical 10 point that scores 113 7/8 net. it only has about 4 inches of deductions. its a great looking deer, just lacking on mass... that really hurt the score. it was my first bow kill too. since then ive only had one chance at a bigger buck... which was the biggest buck ive ever seen while hunting. it was my first hunting trip down to the wayne... first morning too. lets just say it wouldve scored 160-170 easily. needless to say, i missed him at 26 yds... perfectly broadside. :irked: i never will forget that deer... he haunts me. the only deer ive ever seen that had a swagger when it walked. ok, i cant talk about it anymore... tears are starting to fall. :D

mercercountyhunter
08-29-2008, 12:27 AM
man i feel for ya jim, i can feel your pain. i was hunting a 10 point a few years ago in early october that always came out of the corn right before dark and never came my way before dark. then about the 5th night i seen him come out, it was 30 minutes earlier than usual. he came to within 35 yards quartering away, head down feeding. passed on that shot because i thought he would come in to about 20 yards and thought i had more shooting light than i really did. he did not come closer and when he was 35 yards broadside i pulled back to shoot and i could not see him thru my peep sight, even though i could still easily see him thru the naked eye. long story short, never got him that close again and a friend killed him a month later, but never found him until february. he netted over 140 inches. lesson learned , take first good shot available and do not assume they will come closer. now i am going to start crying.
it really is amazing how much mass adds to the deer score. i also can respect a person who is willing to not shoot anything for a few years and sticks to their goals. good luck this year.

meshootbuck2
08-30-2008, 09:11 AM
i have not had a chance to shoot a big buck yet. last year is the first time i shoot one. i had one one to show me the ropes. learned on my on. i did alot of reading. its alot easyer in the books than in the woods.a few years back istarted going to charles alsheimer semaniors and things are starting to turn around for me.but iam working hard at it. i have learned to b e able to fool some does. i a ground hunter.so how it time to try for a buck.so cross tour fingers for me.

meshootbuck2
08-30-2008, 09:22 AM
bucks n backstraps i love it thats the name for me

mercercountyhunter
08-30-2008, 12:45 PM
i kinda learned the ropes on my own also. i think the best way to learn is to just be out there as much as you can. the books and magazines are nice , but seeing things first hand is alot different. the first time a doe snorts and stomps at you and the chill it sends up your spine. the sound and chaos of a buck chasing a doe. hearing a crunch behind you and seeing a buck standing there looking up at you and wondering how did he get so close on a calm, dry day without you knowing.i could go on and on, bowhunting is awesome.
i think you will get a nice buck this year, just put in your time and it will happen. good luck

meshootbuck2
08-30-2008, 09:06 PM
i know with you mean. last year -- and this is no lie -- i had a small 6 point chasea doe near what i call a small ridge they ran past me at about 35yds. in to high thicket came back at me at 25 yrds over the ridge the 6 pt was about 10 sec behind her.he stop at the edge-watching her he came right at me.i put my hand out as far i could and ran my hand a cross hes back. he never turned to look to see want touched him. i will never have that happen again in my life.that will stay in my mind forever. i love the rut any thing can happen.not saying any thing bad about tree stand hunting. but you cant get that kind of haed rush in a tree so iam staying on the ground. i want to see what happens this season.

anyone know how to change the title of the thread? can't seem to figure it out

my biggest deer is my first one, got it w/ a shotgun in the youth hunt up in MI, it was a pretty nice 7 pt, nothing to crazy though, don't know what it scored

Best thing to do would be to pm Sir 45 (deerhunt45) with the new team name and he will change the thread title for you :)

any of you guys whack down some doves or squirrels today? i dove hunted this morning and ended up with 13... shouldve got a limit (of course) but had a couple misses and lost a couple. all in all it was a good hunt though. hunted some public land up here... Resthaven Wildlife Area.

mercercountyhunter
09-01-2008, 04:18 PM
steve, thanks for sending the pm for the team name. sounds like we will be getting an alternate.
i wish i could get out and bust some squirrels and doves, sounds like fun. i have not been squirrel hunting in years due to traveling for work. i use to go alot, kinda miss it. it probably woulda took me 4 boxes of shells to hit that many of them doves. my buddy checked the trail cam today and did not get any pics of those 3 bigger bucks that i posted earlier. i am sure they will not go to far though, probably in the corn.

i've never done much small game hunting myself, done a little rabbit or bird hunting here or there but nothing too serious.

i've seen that some of the other teams are coming about with logo's for their team. any creative mind on our team wanna design something for Bucks'N'Backstraps?

mercercountyhunter
09-01-2008, 09:00 PM
i would not even know how to begin to do a logo. i am not very computer literate. i would be all for it if someone can do it.

ive got a graphics tablet for my computer that lets me draw on it as if im drawing on paper... i may be able to come up with something. not sure when ill get around to it though, its going to be a busy couple of days for me.

09-02-2008, 09:57 AM
Thanks sjastrz for contacting me. DeerHunt45 had not gotten a replacement yet, so he let me on the team.

I have a 10 day trip planned to Coonie's Camp in the Wayne. Hunted there with them last year and got a dandy 10 point in the high 140's class. Hope to do a repeat!!! or at least a decent 2 1/2 year old.

I will be checking in regularly. Goodluck to everybody!

welcome longrifle. i thought you were MIA myself. glad to have you on the team , it should be alot of fun. good luck this year. we will have to start thinking about who we want to be on the roster for the contest against that michigan team. do not know if everyone has seen the thread yet about it , but it should be a good time with alot of ribbin going on. check out the thread, it is in the same page that you find our team thread on . it will be just like college football, another sad year for michigan.

LongRifle
09-02-2008, 09:37 PM
Thanks all, for the welcome. Hopefully I can be a contribution to the team. I have been deer hunting with a bow since 1969. I know, that makes me older than dirt!! I also work at an archery shop, so if any of you have equipment problems/questions, feel free to ask and I will do my best.

Here is deer hunting tip #1. When I was younger and would be out scoutin and such, and I would see deer or find good deer sign, I would not look at the big picture and try to figure out where the deer had come from and where it was going. I would only think in terms of a 100 yds. or so. I'm talking about thinking in terms of 1/4 to 1/2 mile distance's or more, on both sides of the sign. Looking at the big picture helps you discern patterns, funnels, travel zones, feeding areas, etc. of why a deer will be where he's at, at any given time. Hope that makes sense.

I bet you guys have some things you learned about deer, that might benefit the team. Share them. I find that each year it is good to go over deer hunting tips as I have a tendency to forget things.

I will try and post up at least one, each time I visit the forum.

the logo looks good steve. i will be on the team if that is what you guys want(as long as it is ok with the other 2 guys). i guess i will take the pressure, lol . i would love to shoot a good buck and help beat that michigan team. man i wish i could hunt opening day, i do not think i can wait until october 24th to hunt. this sucks.oh well, guess i will miss the bugs and warm weather. i am ready for a break , people at work here are really getting on my nerves....http://www.ohiosportsman.com/forum/images/icons/icon8.gif

jbrown
09-03-2008, 09:08 PM
no worries scott... youll be gettin out during some hot rutting action, which is so much more enjoyable than the early season in my opinion. not only do you have to mess with bugs and sweat your arse off, but you also have to rush around processing your deer if you get one early. thats just not much fun to me. thats why when its warm, i wont shoot anything unless i have a few extra hours after the hunt to burn... just in case.

just wanna post to see if the team pic will show up on my post.
but to share a hint/tip referring to longrifles post, i think it would have to be scent control. the last year is when i really started to take scent control seriously. i went out and bought a scentblocker suit(dream season brand). i now do not wear my outer hunting clothes or boots anywhere but in the woods. i keep them in a sealed plastic tub. i dress when i get to my hunting area. i also shower with the non scent stuff during hunting season and use the non scent deoderant, doesn't work as well, but i do not mind smelling myself if i get stinky after a long day. i think this routine has helped alot, i cannot remember getting winded once by a deer last year. in the past years i would have does snorting , staring up at me and bucks that would get downwind and take off instantly. i am not saying they will not wind you , but i think it gives you that few extra seconds that you need to get a shot until they leave the area. last year i rattled in 3 different bucks that came right to the base of the tree and walked completely around the area and did not spook. so that would be my tip of the day...

Logo looks good. Now if I knew how to get it on my posts????

Scent contol is right up there at the top, on important things to work on, to get your deer. I use a lot of baking soda after my shower. Been using it for underarm deoderant for many years. Works better than any commercially available stuff. Put about 1/4 teaspoon or less in your wet hand and make a paste. It should be a little runny. Rub both hands together and put on each underarm. ( I use it year round) When hunting The Wayne, I put it in my wash water and put a little in my hair after my basin baths. With scent free clothes, I am seldom/never knowingly scented by deer. And guys, that is 8 days without a regular bath/shower.

Anyone is fine with me for the Anti-Michigan team. BUT, I think I will kill the biggest buck on our team, if the rut does not run late!!!!

sjastrz
09-05-2008, 05:59 PM
You're still in ohioduckhunter.

LongRifle, just right click it and save it on your computer and you can upload it into your signature.

I've always kept my hunting clothes in plastic bags or a plastic container with one of the fresh earth scent wafers. Don't think it's gonna happen this season but I wanna pick up one of the scent lock base layers so I can wear it under all my camo. Just ordered some of the UV killer and sport wash so I'm giving that a shot this year also.

LongRifle
09-06-2008, 09:13 AM
Good tip to wash your clothes in the scent free detergent.

I have been using CHEER FREE for years. As far as I know, it is one of the few commercial detergents that has no UV brighteners in the ingredients along with no perfumes or other junk us hunters don't need. A lot cheaper than the stuff you buy in the hunting section, to. Throw a tablespoon of baking soda in the wash load, just for insurance.

I will try to get the Team pic in my posts.

great news man. sounds like a recipe for success. i stopped over at my grandmother's today... she's got an apple tree in the front yard thats just loaded this year. i nabbed up all the apples that were on the ground and am gonna set a bait pile at one of my spots this week i think. usually its an easy way to zap a doe or two and get that outta the way.

sjastrz
09-08-2008, 08:42 PM
i think i'm gonna hold of on the bait till late in the season this year, i've always hunted over bait where we hunt in Michigan with pretty good success but i figure i'm gonna try for a buck early in the season and if i need to take out a couple does to help the team out late in the season i can throw some bait down then

that sounds like a perfect area for bucks and does, especially the acorns and water source. i bet you get a shot at a doe at least in that area in the early season and sounds like a decent rut spot with all the trails coming together. i have never had any luck with bucks coming to an apple pile or salt lick type area during daylight, but the does sure love it and are pretty predictable coming to them on a regular basis.
longrifle, if you are so certain you will kill the biggest deer from this team ,you can have the spot against the michigan team, i do not care either way. just remember, it is based on the number of tines on the deer, not the pope and young score. good luck

well guys, i may have an interesting deer season this year. a couple days ago, i received a phone call telling me that i landed a job at the Medina County Health Department... which is about an hour and twenty minutes from where i live currently. my wife and i are definately going to move over there... which means all of my work scouting around here was basically meaningless. dont get me wrong... the land over in medina county looks phenomenal... lots of large woodlots and farmland... but i think its going to be tough trying to figure out the area and gain access to new land on such short notice of bow season. i definately will have my work cut out for me. another problem is that i will not be able to go down to the Wayne this november for my familys annual deer camp. i wont receive any vacation at the new job until ive been there a year. but dont worry guys i am going to do my best to get on some deer fast. are any of you familiar with medina county or know anyone that is? im gonna need all the help i can get.

sjastrz
09-15-2008, 07:31 PM
congrats on the new job, hopefully you can get out and do a little scouting these next couple of weeks and as the season goes on you can get a little more familiar with the area, that's kinda what i'm relying on too this year seeing how it will be my first season in Ohio

mercercountyhunter
09-16-2008, 04:58 PM
congrats on the new job. just keep knocking on doors and you will find places to hunt. you have plenty of time, even if you spend october scouting, just be ready for the rut!! i am sure there is public land somewhere close by. good luck. 5 more weeks until my deer season opens, cannot wait.

jbrown
09-18-2008, 01:55 PM
yea there are a couple areas of public land over there close by... Spencer Wildlife Area and Killbuck Wildlife Area arent too far away. one thing that really excites me is the size of most of the woodlots in medina county. i was looking on my GIS program the other day, which lets me calculate acreage from aerial photos, and it was RARE to see a woods that is less than 60 acres. most of the woodlots over that way are in the 100-400 acre range... of continuous woods. i even found on continuous woodlot that was 1088 acres! this is exciting to me because all the woodlots im used to hunting here in sandusky and seneca counties are typically 40 acres or less. I AM PUMPED. i am going to commute for a couple weeks though, so ill get to hunt my usual spots around here for the first few weekends at least. hopefully i can whack down a doe or two in that time.

mercercountyhunter
09-21-2008, 03:14 PM
that would be a change for me also to hunt big woods like that , most areas in mercer county are less than 50 acres also. i have always wanted to try to hunt a few hundred continuous acres. how many of you guys are going to be able to get out opening weekend and try to get a doe?
we need to decide about this michigan contest soon also, so everyone cast a vote.i think it needs to be decided before opening day. got one 8 pointer on cam out of velvet from my hunting area, still have not got any more pics of those 2 nine pointers .

i don't think we have to pick anyone from our team for the at large contest, just nominate whoever you want, and even if we did i think pretty much all of you on the team would be better picks than myself since this is my first year hunting in ohio and i'll be doing the public land thing

i'll definitely be out there opening morning though

Came into about 10 yards and hung around for a little while but, like I said, I'm gonna hold of till the temps get a little bit colder till I take any does. pretty cool to see that fox steve, love to watch those. my buddy saw a grey fox this week at 10 yards from his stand, i think i will be trying to trap there this year:) , do not see many greys in my area. keep at it and you will get one, your are not going to miss much by not hunting this week.
jim ,good luck down at your family farm and yes stickers was pretty impressive, that young man is spoiled for life, i just hope he does not think they are all that big, lol.
my buddy's friend hunted this past weekend and had 11 does in his small food plot and missed 6 times if you can beleive that, i think i would give up bowhunting after the 4th miss in one night. should be awesome come rut time if they stick around because we had pics of about 5-6 different bucks, 3 shooters in my book, nothing huge though. 3 more weeks and i will be in a treestand, cannot wait. also cannot wait to get home because i bought a house and closed on it yesterday. i guess i am in the poor house with everyone else now. too bad it will be a year before i can actually live in it. i will be back in the great state of ohio then for good.good luck hunting everybody.

congrats on the new house scott. im sure you are pretty excited about it... i know i would be.

just got some great news from my mom tonight. i was talking to her making arrangements for next week at their farm, and as we were talking she told me 5 does have been feeding on an apple pile my stepdad set out last week... you can see them from the kitchen window. so i told her to make sure they kept the bait frest until i get there tuesday afternoon. :mischeif: i got off the phone, and she called me back like 30 minutes later. she said she threw some corn on the ground where the apples were ('cause their out of apples), and not even 15 minutes later the 5 does were all over it. they were eating while she described it to me, which was around 5:20 pm. needless to say, i am really looking forward to getting down there. i normally do not hunt over bait piles, but this is just too good to pass up. cant wait until tuesday afternoon... hopefully i can give one of those old does some love.:mischeif:

anybody hunt this morning? my brother was out at my new house yesterday doing some stuff and he heard a big deer running through the woods when he got out of the truck and seen 4 does walking along the property/creek line when he was leaving. cannot wait to be able to see the turkeys and deer coming thru the yard. good luck this weekend everyone.

here she is guys. not a big one by any means... just a fawn. but hey, its meat in the freezer and points on the board. quartering away shot, 15 yds, entered through 2nd to last rib and exited out right behind opposite shoulder. she only went about 60 yds before piling up. oh and if you guys read any of the thread about the one guy ( i think Darron ) shooting a deer broadside and not finding any blood... this deer didnt leave a drop of blood that i could find between where i shot her and where she laid. so it does happen. i was hunting from the ground so entry and exit holes were same height on the animal... blood has to pool inside cavity before itll spill out. good thing i saw her go down.

good luck everyone this weekend, keep the points coming. i went striper fishing last night and got skunked. seems kinda weird to me to be fishing in october when i should be deer hunting. the people out here are crazy about their fishing. they have a huge fishing derby from sept 15 thru oct 15th, pretty big deal and they take it serious. i guess it is like people in ohio with their deer hunting. i guess if we had little bucks like they do in massachusetts, i would rather fish also, lol.

jbrown
10-11-2008, 06:50 PM

there aren't really many crop fields around this spot but they are in the area, it's surrounded by a lot thick brushy areas and tall grass, hopefully as the rest of the crops get harvested maybe they will be into the acorn a little more, i think the creek bottom with the ridges will make a pretty good funnel though

hopefully we will here a little more from the other guys...

guys i have been seeing a ton of deer laying dead alongside the roads the past two days... including one today that mustve been a big dude. huge body and head was cut off. i wonder if theres any truth to the early "mini rut" phenomenon and if that could be the reason for the increased deer collisions. or maybe its just because its cooling down who knows. i do know one thing... this weekend looks like prime deer hunting weather. too bad ive got plans to hunt ducks on saturday for the opener instead of sitting in a tree. good luck to you guys this weekend.

hey guys... just a quick status report. i hunted down in carroll county at my mom's place this past saturday. just the afternoon. and let me tell you the deer were everywhere. that front moving in had the deer movement pretty much peaked i think. my brother and i were over-looking the same hay field from adjacent fencerows, and all together i think we saw about 22 deer that night. best part of it all was that the deer were extremely curious too. i rattled in 3 different bucks within 45 minutes total. granted all three were small subordinate bucks, but still it was exciting. they were even pushing does around out in the open field and sparring with each other. after the rattling action settled down i got out the primos bleat can. a few bleats and grunts mixed together... then not 30 seconds later i hear leaves crunching coming my way down the fencerow. in walked a nice 8 point and a 3 point. walked right under me just looking for what was making all the racket. although he was a good deer (big body, basket rack, perfect typical), i passed him up. he would have been lucky to score 115". not that anything is wrong with shooting deer like him, but i like to let them walk because its the only way to shoot one bigger. so anyways, it was a very eventful evening down there and i think the peak of the rut is not too far away. had i not gotten into the whiskey saturday night i wouldve hunted sunday morning too. :mischeif:

hope everyone else is seeing some action too. good luck guys.

well i have been home for a few days, sorry i have not checked in yet, been really busy. i have hunted about 5 times, seen deer everytime except once. had a 20 yard shot on a doe sunday morning, she had a few small twigs in front of her chest, needed her to take 2 more steps to be in the open, but go figure she turned and went back where she came from. probably coulda put an arrow in her, but it was not the shot i wanted. my friend killed a 5 pointer this morning.that is the only buck i have seen from a stand so far. i think things will get better , i can hunt pretty much every evening and morning until i leave at the end of the month. me and three other guys went on a pheasant hunt and trap shooting that was at mad river by bellfontaine. never did that before, but it was pretty cool and alot of fun. got lucky and it was cheap because it was a special event that my brother got invited thru work to go and they paid for half of it. it costs like 750 bucks to be a member, plus you gotta pay for the birds. well heading back out tonight to hunt.

finally saw some antlers today, got out yesterday morning and didn't see crap but i walked around a bit, found a bunch of scrapes, and figured i could get my climber up in that area, i had been back there before and it looked promising but i didn't think there was a tree i could get up, i'm glad i found that one

sat all day today, just after light had a big 8 about 50 yards behind me, an hour later or so another nice buck with a tall rack and a bunch of stickers chased 5 does right to me, i drew and my arrow came off the string when i drew back, not sure what happened, he was hauling a$$ behind those does and i didn't have much of a shooting lane so who knows if i woulda had a shot anyway, sucks though, a little later another 6 or 8 was slinking his way through the woods, finally at 11 another big bodied deer with it's nose to the ground was moving through, couldn't get a good look, that was my last action for the day, gotta a little boring in the stand for the rest of the day, the wind seemed to pick up a lot throughout the day so maybe that's why the movement stopped

i'm really glad that i finally saw some bucks and know that there are some shooters in the area, anyone else do any good?

congrats longrifle, cannot wait to see the pics. hopefully you have broken the ice for the bucks for the team.
between me and my brother we saw 14 deer today including 5 bucks. he saw one nice one that i could not see from where i was. he passed up a small 8 point. he is still trying to get his first deer with the compound he bought this year. hopefully tonight that nice one will venture over and come and see my decoy i will have for him.

hi guys sorry have not check in work 3rd shift then straight to the woods. hunt till dark makes you a tired person. have seen vrey little deer excet for the other night. got a shot on a doe but hit a limb. there was a hand full of white hair around my arrow in the dirt. shot from my new climbing tree stand i got for my birthday. its a lot diff in a tree than on the ground. any pointers on shooting from a tree? as far as shot placement. thanks

my best advice for shooting from a tree is to keep your form and bend at the waist. i think alot of guys miss from a treestand because they drop their arm to shoot. rangefinder's are handy also . i have also had limbs jump in front my arrows, it happens. the hunting is really good right now.

i just got in from hunting . seen 1 deer this morning, but it was a pretty nice 9 pointer. have seen alot of deer from the area i have been hunting and some good bucks, but they just will not cooperate. the buck i seen this morning was by himself and he started to head the wrong way, so i rattled and he stopped, stared and then went on his way. i guess he already had his mind up on where he was going. i really wish i set my decoy up this morning, left it in the truck because it was pretty windy. oh well, keep trying, only a matter of time before one of these bucks comes my way. good luck everyone, it should be a great weekend to hunt.

Can one of my team brothers help me get my buck pic on this forum so we can get credit. How do I get a URL of my JPEG pic.

Sorry guys, the older gen are not to puter savy, but boy do we know how to kill the big ones!! I will post and let you know the details when I get the pic thing figured out.

Hang in there, it's still happening.

basically you need to set up an account on photobucket.com. then you upload your pics to the photobucket website from your computer. once they are uploaded, each pic will have a direct link url below it. copy and paste this link into the blank after clicking on the "Insert Image" icon in the reply to thread screen. its a little complicated untily you get the hang of it.

if you want to skip all this, you could just email the pic to me and ill post it up for you. my email is jbrown@heidelberg.edu

hope this helps.

Mostly the expense and not a real good area to display it in. The Euro mount is going on a stand and will be displayed in my living room. I did get a shoulder mount done on last years OH buck. He is a dandy.

He grossed 149 and net was 144.

i havent been out bowhunting for a few weeks now guys... its really frustrating. i finally got moved over to my new place in seville though, so it should all work out. im heading down to carroll county sunday to see my mom for thanksgiving. ill be bowhunting sunday afternoon, then hopefully whacking 2 or 3 deer down on monday with the slug gun. since the ODNR did away with the 2 deer per day rule, and my mom's place is in zone C, i'm gonna try to harvest as many as i can. there are a ton of does there, and they need to be thinned out. most years i dont even go during shotgun season... but i just havent had much time in the woods this year so i have to make the most of what i get. have a good holiday guys and good luck this weekend.

Take more than one deer per day as long as each deer has been tagged with a temporary tag before hunting for the next deer.

11-27-2008, 01:14 PM
I know you can kill 2 per day, but he was talking more then two.

well i am back on the island now and back to work. i just could not seal the deal on a buck this year. i saw some nice ones, but just could not get one to come into bow range. hope everybody has good luck the rest of the year. sorry i could not knock one down for the team. oh well , i still had a blast hunting and relaxing in the stand this year. the contest has been alot of fun also and it is good to talk to some fellow hunters. good luck the rest of the year, late season can be a great time to get on a buck also.

man that sounded like a great day jim. i wish we could shoot more does in our zone. my brother said that he and everyone he hunted with duriing gun season could have all shot a doe everyday. there are alot of does around here, i wish we could at least shoot 2 does during bow season. congrats.

the buck was out there again this morning, looks like it's got a busted up leg at least, just got home and it's still there, called the police, animal control, and the game warden office to see if someone will come out and shoot this thing

mercercountyhunter
12-19-2008, 12:44 PM
now that you say that about the leg, he does look like he is favoring the left front leg in the pictures. hopefully someone will take care of it. hate to see them suffer like that.

sjastrz
12-19-2008, 01:00 PM
animal control came, hopped up on the ledge where he was, the buck stood up and headed back towards us and into the front yard and ran across the road, exactly what i called for and tried to prevent, he was moving pretty well for only using 3 legs but i got to think if he was bedded down like that for 2 days he probably has some internal injuries, too bad he didn't just hop up and shoot but he said he needs to be right on top of them ideally to shoot one in a residential area like this, hopefully the buck will live to see another day and not cause an accident

congrats jim. that is a great buck. it looks like your persistence paid off. it is tough waiting on a good buck for that many years. i did not shoot a buck this year because i was waiting on a good one. i was kinda bummed about it at first, but now am glad that i did not just shoot a small one to fill my buck tag. it is tough eating tag soup but you cannot kill a big one by shooting the small ones. congrats again on that buck, you deserved it. anybody else been out ?

hey do not worry about it steve. this contest is about more than just killing deer, it is a great way to meet new people that share the same interests and i think that was accomplished. it was fun chatting with everyone this year. i did not have a great year either in terms of putting a buck on the ground, but i had fun and that is the main thing. i learned alot again and seen some nice bucks but they did not cooperate, but they will be that much bigger next year.:) thanks for a fun year guys and congrats to you guys that got deer.

it was a blast talking to you guys about my hunts and congrats to all of you who got deer!
