Hello team, My name is Steve and I hunt in Richland County. I have been bow hunting for nine yrs. The first seven with a crossbow and the last two with a Hoyt Ultramag. I am looking forward to the fun this contest will add to the hunting season. It is a pleasure to meet you Greg, because your on the Buckeye Cam pro staff and we are teammates does that mean teammates can get a discount? :mischeif: :p LETS KILL SOME DEER!!!!:woohoo1:

P.S. What are we going to call our team? I am open to suggestions.

At least we know that two of us hunt in zone c that should help us in the number of deer we can put on the scoreboard.

Hey guy's I'm in!

This will be my 35th year bow hunting but I've never shot a buck... just kidding. :p ;) Ok, I've not shot a BIG buck. Seen a number of them over the years but often lacked quality places to hunt so when you saw one it was quite an event.

I hunt a pretty nice 600 acre farm that spans the border of Tusc and Harrison counties that this will be my third full bow season on it.

Names...... hmm got give this a little thought.

Hoytmania

600 acres, there should be a couple of good sized bucks there. The fun part is trying to find them. Best of luck Bud. :)

Good to meet ya Lance and Steve. I Hunt two farms that border one another totaling around 300 or so acres. Been keepin' an eye on a pretty nice 8, but nothing to go crazy about just yet. I have to say that I'm pretty pumped for this season. I think good things are gonna come, and hopefully, we can capture a victory in the contest.

Steve, if you want a camera, I could probably knock a couple bucks off the price, or even maybe throw in a couple extra items :D

Hoytmania
08-26-2008, 12:27 PM
I have never really look at the Buckeye camera. Other than I've seen it on Fair Chase Whitetails. What do they go for. I'm sure they are not to cheap, but then again anything worth its weight isn't. Got an idea on a name to, let me know what you think. "THE DEER DOMINATORS!!"

gf319804
08-26-2008, 01:48 PM
Not bad...I was thinkin' of "No Chance in He##," for our name. :D
I just hope the other 3 guys decide to check in here soon!

Hoytmania

slimjones checked in with me via PM. I told him to post on the thread. He suggested Team Buck Roar. I don't know. I am a big fan of Primos and a faithful user of their calls but I think something a little more origanal would work. Free and open to imput.

Sweet buck dude! Looks like he was workin on a drop tine. I say we give everyone else who has not checked in another day and then if they have not checked in we go ahead wit hnaming the team from there. Let me know what everyone is thinking. I have sent the other two a PM on the first day. How long do you guys want to wait to ask for alternates to sign up? I saw that the dead line for alternates is Friday. So if this is something that we want to pursue then we need to let deerhunter45 know.

Good to have you onboard Slim.

I was going to ask the same thing about bbd, but my PC froze when I tried to post. :irked:

That's an interesting name, not bad. What about "Pass thru", "Drop Tines" or "Grunt, Snort,Weeze"? Just a few of someI was bouncing around.

Hoytmania
08-28-2008, 11:16 AM
The only thing I can think of aboiut BBD is what kind of ridicule are we going to recieve from the other teams. What kind of names could they make out of it? I know there are some pretty creative folks out there. I don't think Drop Tines is a bad name either.

gf319804
08-28-2008, 12:15 PM
You're gonna catch crap with whatever the team name ends up being...that's just how people roll up in here. LOL I'm cool with drop tine, cause I had also though of a similar name DDT (double drop tines).

You guys would change it to BUTTON BUCK DEER:cheeky-smiley-022:

Hoytmania

My vote is for DDT (Double Drop Tine) I like the full name better than the abreviation. I say send out a PM to the other guys and see what they think. If they like it thats good for me. And we still need to hear from the other two guys. It kinda worries me that they haven't checked in yet. I hope this isn't a precursor to how they hunt.

If they don't check in, then we will pick up a couple guys from the alternate sign-up, or just have a 4 man team.

Man slim, I didn't wanna ask, didn't wanna stir up trouble on my own team, but I gotta know...What is the deal with the yellow rubber gloves in your avitar pic? I can't help but laugh when I see the pic. Can't figure out if you were doing dishes when you shot the deer, or what. :D

Hoytmania
08-29-2008, 12:18 AM
I have yet to wear gloves while dressing a deer. Roll up the sleeves get the job done and clean up with a rag after words.

Lance
08-29-2008, 09:53 AM
Actually I do where gloves sometime when dressing deer, I'd rather not take my chances on getting lyme disease. I buy a couple pairs of the $0.99 gauntlet gloves they sell and keep one in my pack. I just make sure they don't get caught in any pictures so I don't get picked on. :)

gf319804

Now fellas, don't get me wrong, I usually wear rubbers when I got to work on a deer. :D I just have never used Mama's dish washing gloves. :mischeif: Don't mind us slim, we're just havin' a little fun.

Your alternates are countyroad and Mao (provided they check in).

Mao
09-02-2008, 10:44 AM
Mao checking in. I am happy to be an alternate on the squad. I am from Coshocton County and hunt in Coshocton as well. I hunt 9 different properties that range from 10-100 acres of private land. This will be my third year of serious bowhunting. I am using my Bowtech 101st Airborne for the contest. Good luck to everyone. I can't wait for the season to get here.

Lance

Great to have you Mao!

countyroad
09-02-2008, 11:53 AM
Countyroad checking in.

I'll be hunting Holmes County this season and maybe some on public land around Columbus. I hunt my grandparents' property in Holmes county as well as their neighbor's. This will be my 17th year hunting that property. I'm looking forward to it.

I'll be using my Bear Instinct bow.

I'm in a difficult situation as I have season tickets to Buckeye Football games and I usually hunt every weekend. This will be my second deer season living in Columbus. It's not easy living so far from the woods I've hunting for so long. I used to live less than 30 minutes away, now it's more like 2 hours.

Hey guys, I got bored today sitting around, and did up a quick logo for our team. It's nothing too special or anything, so feel free to make something else if you would like. I am going to continue to mess with it.

Here's the link if you would like to put it in your signature line.

Welcome to the team countryroad and Mao. :Welcome: Glad to have a complete team. I am very excited about the up and coming season. The first few weekends I will be scouting from behind a video camera trying to get my sons first bow kill on video. I am pumped, He shot from his stand for the first time Monday and was slaying the 3D target. Can't wait to see what he does to the real thing.

I really like the logos I thinkl they are SWEET.

I went out last night just to see if that 8 pt. I've been watching was still feeding in the beans where he had been, and sure enough, there he was. Even saw a little 6 point shedding his velvet. Going out tomorrow to put the camera back up where it was and put down some apples to try to get a few good pictures of that buck.

Hoytmania
09-05-2008, 12:28 AM
My son and I went out Monday. I wanted him to practice shootin his bow from his stand before season rolled around. He was slaying that 3D target we had set up I'm pumped for him. :bouncy: I was walking through the woods to go get my stand and left him at the base of the tree where his stand is. When i got back he told about a doe and a small buck that i had spooked up and went right by him. He said they didn't even see him and stoped right on the other side of the tree he was standin at. He showed me where the doe was from him and it was only about 5 ft. He was stoked. :yikes:

Other than that haven't got to spend the time I am wanting to in the woods. Hoping to go look for some rubbs in the next few days.

Due to coaching, and my new little eight month girl at home, I have not got out as much as I would like to. I have been running two trail cameras. I've been moving them on Saturdays from one location to another. The biggest I have got is a 140ish 11pt. with a 8-10in. drop tine off of his left main beam. I hope the team name is an omen, I would gladly settle for a single drop tine buck. haha. I have also got a couple other shooters on camera as well. If I get a chance, I will try to post some pictures. I have trouble with that and I don't have an extra memory card, but I will see what I can do. I have seen a couple giants in the soybeans next to where I hunt earlier in the summer. Hopefully they hang around.

Mao
09-05-2008, 08:33 AM
Wow! I meant to put my eight WEEK old daughter. Oops. I need some sleep.

Lance
09-05-2008, 09:36 AM
Congrats on the daughter! Mine will be 10 this month, it goes FAST.

I'm planning on getting out next weekend to get my first 5 spots picked out and help my cousin figure out where to hunt. This will be his first year hunting with me in about 15 yrs or more and his first year on the property I hunt. He's just looking to get himself a doe so it shouldn't be too hard to get him on track.

I use the Lone Wolf hang-on stand so I just need to go around and hang up my hooks in the spots I want have my stand set. That and I have one other permanant stand I'll lock in.

My father-in-law has been seeing several shooters on the other side of the ravine up need the houses and there's a BIG deer that we've been seeing tracks of for the past two seasons and it appears he's still around. He found fresh tracks last weekend in the usual areas for him. We've only seen him once and that was two years ago, he should be absolutely UNREAL by now!

countyroad
09-05-2008, 11:07 AM
I was hoping to get back to my grandparents and move a stand over the weekend of September 20th. It's a hang on stand that want to hang in another spot. I had some issues last weekend getting the stand out of the tree so I need to go in with bolt cutters to get it down. I'll hang it using my lone wolf sticks and leave it be until the time comes. Unfortunately there's a chance I'll be in Europe for a couple weeks for work and won't make it.
If I were to get it moved on the 20th I wouldn't be hunting it for a couple weeks anyway. So I'm not worried about leaving scent in that spot as it will have time to settle down. It gives me a great spot for a southerly wind at a funnel.

I haven't been able to get my trail cam set up at all this summer. I've been too busy. I've spent several weeks out of the country. I'm really looking forward to spending time on stand.

gf319804
09-05-2008, 01:38 PM
I work shift work for DuPont, 12 hour shifts, and I only work 14 days out of the month. I get two 3 day breaks, and one 7 day break every month. It just so happens that my 7 day break starts the day before the archery opener. I plan on spending most of that first week out there, gonna try to score early. I also plan on using my time in-stand to do some early season scouting and possibly fine tune some of my stands.

I'm leaving now to go hang a camera.

Just set up a blind at my brother-in-laws. I have never hunted at this property before but have seen some great deer in the area in the past. It is probably not going to be the most exciting place to hunt. It is one of those places that you could sit for hours to only get a few seconds of seeing the deer. It is set up along a travel route. I am hoping to get to sit there a few mornings and see what happens. It might not end up being very active until it gets a little closer to the rut. I told my brother-in-law if he needs to get away from the wife for a while I have supplied a little place for him to get away. He just needs to video while he is out. :)

With the rain on its way, I decided to sneak out this afternoon and check the camera. I had 168 pictures, but none of that 8pt I was hoping for. Several bucks still in velvet, and one that looks like he might have peeled already.

Mao
09-12-2008, 08:44 AM
I was going to wait until Sunday, but since its going to be raining all day I am going to go check one of my cameras this afternoon. I've got high hopes. The last time I checked it, the camera only took one pic. I forgot about the battery and it needed changed. The one pic that it did take was of a nice 8 pointer. I had a ton of bait out and it was all gone within a week and the ground was dug up around it. So I reloaded it with bait and it has been there for a week. I am going to wait another week before checking my other camera that is deep in the strip mines. Anybody else seeing anything or getting trail camera pics?

gf319804
09-12-2008, 09:18 AM
I had 168 pictures in 3 days, but nothing to brag about. I've been experimenting with my new camera for the past two weeks, and I am pretty impressed. I set the camera up to run video clips for 2 days, and got a couple cool videos, but again, nothing big. I'm pretty confident that the big boy will show up next week within' a few days of the full moon. I also got video of a buck that had shed his velvet, but everything else I have seen is still in velvet.

Mao
09-12-2008, 03:45 PM
Well, I am pissed. Someone stole my Moultree. I was really surprised because of the location. Someone had to trespass a long ways or go right by the landowners house to get it. I guess thats just the way it is.

gf319804

That sucks man, I hate to hear that. Did you have it locked on the tree? Either way it still sucks

BuckSlayer
09-12-2008, 04:52 PM
I had someone steal my cam last year, really put me down and I didnt even wanna hunt that spot. I did anyways a killed a nice 8 so dont give up....I would still try to hunt in that area if it holds the deer you want...sorry about your cam.

Mao
09-12-2008, 09:18 PM
Thanks buckslayer. I was pretty pissed and thought about sayin F it and not even try that spot. Your right though, it still is a good spot even though the camera was stolen there. Hopefully I will have the same result as you did. Would be kinda cool to get one there after that.

Lance
09-12-2008, 09:55 PM
Well that sucks. We had one stolen a couple years ago and it wasn't anywhere near obvious. Gotta love the trespassers.

I've got a pick of one of our up and coming deer off a cam that my father-in-law put up. It's a nice 10 pt that they're estimating at 2 1/2. I'll try to get it posted tomorrow sometime. :)

09-13-2008, 08:06 AM
Hey fellas. It sure is a soggy one out there today. Looks like the rain has moved off to the north just in time. I'm gonna head to Apache bowhunters for their shoot. It's a two day shoot.

gf319804
09-13-2008, 08:25 AM
Good luck with the shoot county. Went out last night to glass the bean fields a little, and saw roughly 15 deer, the majority being does. I did see a small 8 partial out of his velvet. That rain had the deer out early last night.

How is everyone doing after the wind yesterday?

I'm still w/o power. The neighbors have power but not me. A limb snapped the service line to our house so we are low priority. They say by Wednseday @ 8:00 PM I should have power. My one neighbor allowed us to run an extension cord over to our place to plug in the fridge so we will not lose all of our groceries.

I have some serious clean up to do when I get home this evening.

Hoytmania, Sorry to hear that. Sounds like your taking the right approach and keeping the right attitude. Hang in there. As far as power goes, we were one of the lucky ones that did not lose it. I am a school teacher and we were off Monday and yesterday. That was kinda nice. I got to shoot my bow a lot more and fine tune it a bit. I am excited to say that I am good to 35yds out on my first pin. I love my long draw. Gets me a few more fps. Sorry to hear about everyone elses power problems. Hopefully that get it restored soon.

So what is everyones plan for opening day? Everybody going to make it out? I don't know if I am going to get out in the am due to coaching my varsity soccer team, but I definately will get out in the pm. I plan to set my climber up on the edge of a soybean field that got planted really late. This is the same place that last year I had a 150+ buck and a 130+ buck come to about 60yds from me in late January when the field was planted with winter wheat. This is also the area that my trail camera got stolen. A neighbor has told me that he has seen a very large buck come out in the beans recently so hopefully I will see something. I think I am going to try my Flambeau Boss Buck with half a rack to see if curiousity may get one to come bye. What is everyones plans?

I start my 7 day break friday before the season opener, so I will be hunting Saturday-Thursday. I'm going to use this week to take my wife out in the stand with me, and introduce her to the sport. She wants to tag along, and it's always fun to have a buddy to talk to, and an extra set of eyes. Plus she can run the camera. :D I plan on hunting along a bean field where I've seen a nice P&Y 8pt, and maybe later on in the week busting a doe. I've been shooting every day and feel great shooting out to 30. I've been shooting at 40 yards daily trying to dial it in, but I will probably never shoot that far.

Sorry to hear about your untimely misfortune. You have a good outlook and are prepared so it sounds like you will be ok. Your family's well being is first, hunting is secondary.

I'll predict one thing right now, you will enjoy every minute you are able to be in the woods this season maybe more than ever...we have a tendency to take things for granted sometimes and don't realize it. I'll also predict you'll make the times you can hunt more productive than ever.

I think you are absolutely right. We are so blessed in this country that we don't even know what we got. For right now I am just going to consetrate on letting my boy hunt. He is 12 and this will be his second year hunting with his compound. He missed on heck of an 8 pointer last year, just shot over his back. I have had his stand set up for quite while and have had him shoot at the 3D target from his stand a few times. So I think alot of my hunting will be done through the eyes of my son. Which i can't think of a better hunting buddy to have. I am sure that we will have some video footage to share with everybody.

Well, went out this afternoon and hung 4 awesome stands. Gonna hang 3 more next week while I'm on my week vacation, after I do some watching from the stands. Checked the trail camera and moved it to a new location. Finally got a picture of that 8pt I've been trying to locate since the end of August. I've been shooting every evening, and am feeling good out to 30 yards. Not quite ready for 40 yet, at least not by my standards. Boys, I am pumped this year more than ever. It's gonna be a good one. I spent Saturday shooting with about 6 buddies. Had an absolute blast. We set up 3-D targets in the woods and put on our own shoot including a 100 yard money shot. Sunday I spent the day checking stands for storm damage and moving one of my hang on stands. The hang on had screw in steps that were grown into the tree so I had to chisel them out. That was some serious work. I also had to use bolt cutters to get the stand down as the chain was grown in. I moved that hang on to an awesome spot and was able to use my lone wolf sticks to put it up. I absolutely freaking love the lone wolf sticks. Damn was it easy.
One draw back is that someone has put up a ground blind right at the edge of my grandparents' woods. I often hunt a set up that is 50 yards in from the field edge. The field is owned by the neighbor who I have permission from to thunt. He lets other family members hunt but it's never been a problem because where his property meets my grandparents' is all field. The groundblind is 50 yards from my stand and it sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm pretty bummed out, but he has every right to hunt where he is. Who knows, maybe once he knows where we are hunting he will move.

Sounds like everyone's ready to go. I have a couple more little things to do. Like scent free wash the clothes, get a toe rope on my climber, and thats about it. I was able to get out and shoot yesterday. I am in the same boat as GF. I feel real good around 30 but when I step back to 40 I am just not consistant enough. I can't wait for the weekend to get here. We are starting a new tradition this year. My buddies and I are having a bonfire/weenie roast and plan to shoot after dark with the flood lights. I hope I can have an encounter with the drop tine buck this coming weekend. Just hope he is still traveling through the beans.

The beans out home aren't looking so hot. After we had that real bad wind last Sunday, the beans went from full and green, to dried up and yellow. Deer are still eating in them, but not near as much as they have been. The acorns are starting to fall, so I moved two stands off the beans. One is around a good crop of Oaks, and the other is in a good transition area.

Opening weekend, I will be sitting in a stand on a fence row between two bean fields. I can see for about 200 yards in both directions. I'm gonig to use this stand to hunt obviously, but more importantly, to see if the big bucks are coming out and hitting the beans, and where they are coming from. Plan to put 3-4 more stands up after watching for a few days.

Sounds like a good plan there flute. Good luck. Mine is similar.

My plan is to hunt the acorns. I won't make it out opening weekend, but the 2nd weekend of the season I'll be out. The stand I put up yesterday is a great funnel thanks to an extremely steep cliff/hillside and narrowing of the woods between two large woods. My stand is on the edge of the woods but the deer in the woods are forced through on a saddle that is at 30 yards. The trees around this stand are all mature oaks and dropping acorns. Next to my stand in the field is where a row of beans, a row of corn and alf alfa all come together. It's full of deer crap. Not to mention there's scrapes/rubs all up and down the field edge. I don't necessarily target scrapes while hunting, but it's nice to have them around.

From this stand I can see the whole field and watch where deer may be moving into the field from in other parts. I can then move additional stands accordingly.

I went out last night to sit in the ground blind on the edge of a bean field, and on the way in, I saw a real nice buck, but only for about 5 seconds before he was gone. Didn't have time to count points, but looked like he was probably an 8 or 10, with around an 18" inside spread. Real big body also. Here's a picture from the trail camera from last week...

Nice pic!

It looks like we're getting close. :)

I'm bumming right now. I had hold up on shooting, pulled something in my left arm and the DR. is calling it tendonites(sp?). They've got me taking 1000 mg a day of an anti-inflamatory, which seems to be working so far. It's been a very noticble improvment as long as I'm taking them as prescribed with no misses. Barring any setbacks I should be back on track to shoot the beginnig of next week and be ready to go without a hitch by the first weekend that I would expect to hunt. Just taking it REALLY easy on it right now.

I thought at first that picture was of the same deer I video taped, but after looking closer, it isn't. This buck (in the picture) has a much smaller spread, you can see that his ears go beyond his rack. The buck in the video is definitely wider than his ears.

Glad you guys liked the video!

I was out shooting last night, and had the flood light set up so I could see the target. I was drilling them in there at 30 yards, one right after another. Came just about as close to a Robin Hood a person could with out actually achieving it. I split the end of my knock in half and splintered the shaft.

I also got my broadheads put on, lined up, and shot. Shooting real good with them at 20 and 30yards. Figured I should wait for daylight to attempt 40 with them.

Bottom line is outside of washing the last few pieces of clothing, and getting my gear bag ready for Saturday, I am ready boys! Let's put some points on the board early, and get a good lead. Then from there, we won't look back...Less than 48 hours now fellas... :D

Nice goin flute.

I was shooting my broadheads late on Tuesday. Good practice for low light shooting. I'm hoping to get back out and shoot em again on Sunday. Maybe Saturday, but I doubt it. I'm really good at 30 yards. As I shoot to 30 and then even more at 40 the arrow starts to drive right. I'm gonna move my rest a shade to the left (right handed) and see if that helps at 40 yards.

Lance,
I'm using the rip cord drop away. In my post above I mentioned that I'm going to move my rest to the left. It can't be off by much. At 20 and 30 yards it's not too bad. Of course minor problems are magnified at further distances. I'm not concerned at all, just a matter of making the rigt adjustment.

Hey guys. I didnt make it out this morning, but I did tonight and it was very exciting. I saw a total of 18 deer and 11 were bucks. I could not believe it. They were out in the brown soybeans nosing around. I even saw two different sets of bucks sparing it out. I passed on a 125' buck that proceded to pass me at 20yds and go straight to the other side of the beans to the only shooter of the 11 and lock horns. He was the biggest,a real nice 8 pointer that I definately would of taken given the opportunity. Hope everyone is having fun out there. I definately did. I feel like I got spoiled tonight. Hey guys. I went out last night and tried a different soy bean field that was planted late and is very green. Didn't see to much but a few does and a spike. My buddy, who was at the opposite end of the field said he had a GIANT step out near him just before dark. He said it never got any closer than 70 yds. I went out this morning and sat near a water hole about 100 yards from a corn field. I did not hear or see a thing. I am going out tomorrow morning since we are off school for the county fair. Then it is back to school and I will try after on Wednesday night. Anyone else have a report?

The boy and I saw a doe on Sunday morning. Didn't get close enough to get a shot on her. The problem we are having is the woods that we are hunting used to be a really good open hardwoods, but about four yrs ago a big storm came through and wiped out a 40 yd wide path. Now the sun is getting into the floor of the woods and is getting so thick that if the deer go off the trail at all they just simply disappear. I hope when the leaves start to fall that it will open things up a little bit. Other than that had a wonderful time in the woods with my son this weekend.

Hoyt, I hope you get your boy on a deer soon. Looking forward to the video!

I finally got to try shooting tonight and it went pretty well. Actually better than expected!

When I released the first shot I got a pretty sharp pain and a "pop" in the elbow(straight elbow was/is the problem child). After that though it got progressively better and ended up shooting 15 arrows with minimal pain and almost reasonable accuracy. It's almost as if the shock of shooting the bow popped something back into place. I'm going to continue to ease back into it but the early results look like I should be able to take up the cause a week earlier than expected. :bouncy:

Well, I chose to go out this morning and move a stand instead of hunt. Hung a stand over a watering hole with some good sign. I sweat like a pig out there, so I decided to leave that stand and hunt another this evening.

I had intended to take my climber out this evening and scout a few new spots, but my lone wolf sticks came in today. I was so anxious to try them out that I decided to go out and hang a stand near some Oaks and hunt that for the evening.

Didn't take long for me to start seeing some deer, maybe 45 minutes. Had 3 does come in on me, one really big one, and I decided I was going to shoot her. She stepped into a window, and I let an arrow fly, only to watch it go right over her back. The three ran off about 20 yards and stood there snorting for about 10 minutes, then they came back to feed. Guess they weren't to startled. One ended up working towards me, and stepped into an opening at 10 yards, I drew back, put my 10 yard pin right behind her shoulder, and let an arrow fly. She kicked and ran off, my arrow sticking in the ground where I shot her. I listened for a minute and heard her go down.

Funny thing about the miss, I was so excited about getting my first shot, that I guessed the deer to be @ 30 yards, when she really was only @ 20, so I shot right over her back.

And the picture...

Good work GF! We are on the board. What kind of broadhead did you use?

I kick it old skool with Muzzy 3 blades. Tried the mechanicals for a while, and while the hole they cut was nice, I was having issues with getting a complete pass through. I would rather have a complete pass through with two wounds for blood to pour from, than to have the arrow only make an intrance hole.

I agree with your buddy, Lance. When I bought my hoyt 3 years ago, I went back to shooting them, and I am 3 for 3 on deer, with complete pass-throughs on all of them. It takes a little more to make sure they are tuned correctly, but I have never had an issue with any Muzzy broadheads.

Hey guys, posted this in the Bowhunting Forum. I am pumped about tonights hunt. I am just trying not to get my hopes up to much. Bowhunting can be very rough and aggervating. PS: Not trying the deke tonight.

How to set up
Okay, here is the scenario. Sunday night me and a buddy set up at opposite ends of a large bean field. The beans are still green due to being planted very late. At my end of the field, I saw a couple does and a spike buck. I could barely see with my binos down to his end. I could only make out that there were deer there. When we met up after the hunt, my buddy was really worked up. He said he was watching two spikes spar and then they both took off. He looked back to his right and he said a booner walked out into the beans about 70yds from him with about 15 minutes of shooting light left. He said he was so shook up he couldnt even count points. After he described it the best he could, I am pretty sure this is the same buck I had to about 60 yards in January last year in this same field which was winter wheat at the time. At that time, I would have estimated him at 150-160ish last year. My buddy said he didnt see exactly where he came in but has a good idea. My buddy suggested that tonight, we both set up on the hillside that he comes in on. By doing this, our hope is that if he comes in off of the same hillside tonight, one of us will get a shot. I think we are going to go with this, but it brought another thought to mind. It made me wonder if sticking the boss buck decoy out would draw him in. Do you think that a B&C buck could be scared off by the 120 class decoy? Would you try it? I think we are going to try it with no decoy. If he shows up and neither of us get a shot, maybe next time we would try it if there is a next time. What do you guys think? What would you do in this situation?

gf319804
10-01-2008, 10:57 AM
I'd save the decoy for mid/late October. I wouldn't think he would be drawn to the field just because there was another buck out there this time of year. Your better off just to set up where you think he's gonna come out, and be ready! I wouldn't get too far off the bean field, unless you know for sure where he's bedding. If you get in there and bump him up a couple times, you're liable to never see him again. Just post up on the field, and be patient. Eventually, you'll get your chance.

I'm shootin a Ultra Mag. I am pretty pleased with it. It is the first compound that I owned. I am anxious to see what hoyt is going to come out with next. I guess the release date for the new model is Oct. 18th. You would think that they would release that before season rolled around. I was talking with a guy whose son plays on my boys football team together. He shoots competitively for hoyt, and he said every three years they do some major changes to the footprint of the bow and that is this year. So looking forward to seeing what they got up there sleeve.

Ok, not really but I'm with Greg. I'd probably hold off for a couple weeks on wheeling out the decoy. Only the youngins are really going to be doing much with establishing any pecking order right now. He'd likely ignore it as much as anything right now. Here in a couple weeks as the testosterone start move a little more it will be a different story.

Just figured I'd let you guys know that my recovery progress is continuing every bit as fast as I'd hoped for after shooting this weekend!:woohoo1:

I was able to jump up to 36 arrows tonight with almost zero pain and only slight fatigue when I quit shooting. I was able to keep about 85% in less than a 4" at 20 yards and took 4 shots out to almost 30 and put 50% in the 4" ring. Obviously I'm not quite up to hunting form but I'm REALLY close! If I can keep up with the steady practice to get my follow through more consistent I should be good to go by no later than next weekend!

Thats awesome Lance. Sounds like you will be ready in no time. Got in a lil while ago from the evening hunt. It turned out to be pretty disappointing. It seemed like the same deer came out from the same places they did on Sunday. The big boy never showed. Some does poped out where he entered Sunday about 40 yds from me, they kept looking back over their shoulders into the woods, then something spooked them and they took off back into the woods. Nothing else. I did learn though that someone has been trespassing and was bragging about seeing a 170 in that bean field. I hope I catch them, I am sure its the same person who stole my camera.

Lance, that's great to hear. I hope you can get out hunting here soon. I know how much I enjoy it, and I know it's gotta be hard on ya.

Mao, we (Jesse and I) had a disappointing night also. Tomorrow morning outta be great, as cold as it got this evening. Stick with it and be patient man, you'll nail that buck. Just lay low and don't do anything crazy, and you'll get your chance. You know the saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," that's my motto for deer hunting. If you are seeing deer, and aren't spooking them, don't change a thing you are doing, just be patient. Remember the deer have a mind of their own, and do think some-what rational. If you keep your scent down, and don't jump this guy, you'll eventually get your chance. Just don't let impatience get the best of ya. Good luck buddy.

Hoyt, get that boy of yours on a deer, so you can put one on the board! ;) j/k I don't like the Hoyt much because of it's weight and the short back wall. I don't know what I'm gonna buy next year, but I'm gonna shoot them all before I make a decision.

Slim, what's going on with your stand? Might be able to help you out there, if you give some details.

Thanks guys for the compliments. It was a bummer to miss the first doe, but glad it was a clean miss, and that the second shot was a clean ethical kill.

I found a good tree with great cover right near where he last came in to the field. I have a lot of confidence with my climber in the set up. Also, hope the morning hunt is going well for ya.

As far as bows go, I switched from a Hoyt Vulcan to a Bowtech 101st this year. I think you are going about it the right way. Don't get caught up in the Mathews, Hoyt, Bowtech, blah blah blah. Forget the names, and shoot em all. Everyone likes different things in a bow, I just shot em all and picked the one that felt best. Not the name. Its a fun experience, enjoy it.

It looks like I may go down to the woods this weekend even if I don't hunt. The wind put trees down across almost every logging road on the property which means we can't get a quad back to drag out the deer. Wouldn't be such big deal but I'm the 2nd youngest guy in the bunch and we don't need anybody to have a heart attack. The other peice is that one of the guys went down to work last weekend and said there were a number of cars parked along the roads around us last weekend so it sounds like we may have a problem to take care of. :irked: Odds of them hunting the other sides of the road are quite low. I may have to take the 12 ga. down to do a little target shooting, those squirrels are all over the place know..... :mischeif:

It seems like you have to go in and make sure everyone realizes there's someone around and watching. The property used to be over-run with locals tresspassing, to the point they would threaten the land owner and that's the main reason we have the access we do now. He won't walk the property unless he's packing a side arm. A couple years ago a bunch went around the gates on quads a road around shooting up the woods midweek during the rut trying to drive the deer out of our area. They're a real peice of work....

Man Lance sounds like you might want to get the game warden down there. Hate to hear crap like that. It is people like that, that gives all us respectable hunters bad raps in the eyes of non hunters. Really burns me. :irked: Well the boy and I are going out tomorow morning he has the day off school and me being laid off works out to be an extra hunting day. I will be sure to let you guys know what happens I sure hope the action is better now that the wheather has cooled off.

We've got a pretty good relationship with the DNR and they're actually fairly attentive to us. The local warden as well as a couple biologists came down and walked the property about a month ago to see what we've been doing/offer advice. They've increased the patrols around pretty significanlty over the past three years as well. That's another reason some of the locals don't like us. They issued 45 violations in the immediate area over gun season a couple years ago for a variety of things. We've even gone to the trouble of creating photo ID cards for everyone that hunts the property and a handful of guest cards. ANYONE caught without the cards unless they are in the company of one of us will get a ticket for trespassing.

Good luck with your boy, I hope you get up close and personal with some deer!

Good idea Lance with the I.D. cards.

With the access I acheived this year to hunt my grandparents' neighbors' property I have made copies of and laminated the permission slip. I keep one with me at all times while hunting and then I put the copy in my dashboard.

I also gave the landowner a sheet listing my vehicle description and all my contact information.

Sound like you got a pretty good handle on it. We saw 5 deer. A doe and two of here fwns come across the field from about 250 yds. They got to 46 yds. and turned. that was the closest they got. She was a real nice doe to. We are getting ready to back out here for an evening hunt. This will be the first evening hunt this season. We will see how it goes. On thing that is kinda bothering me is that there is very minimal buck sign. I don't know if they are running a little late this year or what. I did find a few rubs this morning. So I know they are out there. It is just a matter of finding them. This property has a good history of producing some big deer. This is the property that I took my first buck on. About two years ago My son and I found a shed that has eight points on the one shed, and the bases where about 5 inches. The other amazing thing was about three years ago I found a rub that was on a tree that was bigger around than a telephone pole. This was the most amazing rub I have ever seen. I wish I had a picture of it to share wih you guys.

Anybody have any luck so far this weekend? Any sightings? I went out Saturday morning and evening. Sat. morning I saw two spikes and Sat. night I saw 4 smaller bucks and the same 120ish 8 pointer that I saw on opening day along with a handful of does. My dad went out with me for the first time this year. He said he had a shooter at 20 yds., but could not get a shot due to the thick cover. He said hes not going hunting tonight and I could try the same stand tonight. So, that is my plan for the evening hunt.

I had my first sit of the season yesterday. Saturday morning I saw 5 and had a mature doe, a yearling and a fawn all at 10 yards but let them walk. Then Saturday evening I saw 6 doe and one unidentified large bodied deer. The closest the does got was 42 yards.
This morning I saw one small buck at first light. He got to within 25 yards but I passed on him as well.
It was a difficult weekend for me. I woke up Friday morning with the flu/cold. I didn't fall asleep until late on Friday night, but I still woke up at 3 am on Saturday morning to make the drive north to hunt. I'm tired to say the least right now. To top it all of I get to drive to Kentucky tomorrow morning where I'll be all week for work.
Still, I'm damn glad I went hunting. It was as good as any medicine I could take.

Still no luck for the boy and I. We were out this morning and got out to go to church and just as we where leaving the woods into the field there was 2 does heading our way about 200 yds. away. Unfortunatley they saw us the same time we saw them. So you can figure out the rest. Probably wont be back out till Sat. I want to try the other end of the property with our ground blind. Will probably try that this next weekend. I just prefer stands over blinds. I think you can see so much more from the stand. Just my opinion. Hope you feel better and safe travels countryroad.

I wish I could. I don't have permission for the property with the corn. I was kicking myself today after I left, for not asking the farmer if I could hunt along the edge of his field. He was nice guy to talk to, probably talked for 20 minutes or so. Maybe I'll hit him up tomorrow after I come out of the woods.

I've been on my way out of the woods after hunting in the morning when the farmer has arrived to start picking corn. I just turned around and went back into the my stand. Saw several deer run out of the corn. Lots of times they'll run out of the corn then stop at the edge of the field before walking into the woods calmly. It's not uncommon for the deer in the woods to be attracted to the sound of a combine as well.

I hunted Saturday morning and evening and then this morning.

Saturday morning I hit a doe with my truck on my drive to hunt. She must've been fine because she kept going. No damage to my truck either. Once I got on stand I saw a decent buck at about 7:00. He was within 25 yards. It was too dark for a shot, but I would've pass him anyway. Saw a couple does later on that were pretty far off.

Saturday evening I saw 11 doe and one buck. The buck was a young 8 point with a pretty good spread. He never got within range, but I would've passed anyway.

This morning I saw 9 doe and three bucks. One of the bucks was the same buck I saw Saturday morning. I saw him with better light and he's a good one, just needs one more year. He was tearing up a couple large weeds that were growing in the field. He's thinking about the rut. The other two bucks were far off, but through the binoculars they looked to be 1.5 year old 8 points.

Countyroad - Sounds like you had a good weekend other than the encounter with the doe with your truck. Its always fun to see bucks.

I only made it out Sunday afternoon. I went deep into the strip mines where I have never hunted before. It was pretty disappointing. I did not hear or see a deer. I did see a real nice rub though. Kind of spooky walking out of there last night though. The reflection of the moon on the trees was pretty bright.

Hey fellas lokking forward to colder weather this weekend. It ought to get the deer on their feet and moving. What are some of your plans for the weekend? I know mine is to try and makeup for last weekend. I sure hope Austin gets another chance at a deer this weekend.

My plans depend on the wind. The last two weekends had east, northeast or southeast winds which do not work for one of my favorite stands. I've made a real effort to avoide set-ups with bad wind. As of now they're forecasting NNE winds on Saturday and SSW on Sunday.
The current forecasted winds are good, almost as good as the lower temperatures.

This is going to be a family weekend so I won't be getting out. I'm going to take my daughter out with the dogs to the youth pheasant hunt to flush some roosters and then start teaching her to shoot. I'm going to break out my old .410 and let her pop off a couple rounds and see what she thinks. After that I get to take the camper into storage and get the family out to enjoy the fall colors. Then I get to hit it hard, I've gotten some approval for some extra time off work and since I'm giving up some extra family time to enjoy the fall colors it will make some other shorter escapes easier! ;)

Hey guys, just thought I'd check in and see how things are going. Hunted a little this past weekend, seemed like the cold weather had the deer moving a little better. Had a couple interesting experiences over the weekend, but nothing to show from it. I start my week long break from work on Friday, so I will be hunting hard until Halloween, and will have to return to work.

Thought I'd share the most interesting part of my weekends' hunt with you fellas. I had to work Thursday night (6:30p-6:30a), and ended up skipping out at 5:30 so I could go hunting. Bowhunter1023 met me at the house, and we took off for the woods. Got set up along a grown up field where I had found a pretty good rub line. Around 7:30, I look across the field, and about 80 yards away, I see a tree, right around 15 feet tall, swaying 2-3 feet back and forth, but I couldn't see the deer. BH1023 was in the stand above me, and stood up to see if he could see the buck tearing up the tree, but the deer was just far enough over the crest of the hill, that all he could see was the flicker of the tail. I broke out the grunt call, and hit it several times, but I couldn't get the buck's attention. He was too busy rubbing the tree. This went on for about 5 minutes, and then nothing. A few minutes later, about 10 yards up the hill, we catch movement, and he's hitting up another tree, but again we can't see him. Ended up sitting in the stand til 9:30, when curiosity got the best of me. We got down and snuck over to where we had seen the trees a swayin', and ended up finding 15-20 rubs, and 6 or so ground scrapes. The scrapes were very fresh, and the rubs were wet from sap oozing out of the trees. The first tree we watched the buck tear up was about 2.5" in diameter. A couple of the rubs were on trees between 4 and 5" in diameter.

We hung a stand along the rubline, and hunted it saturday morning, but only saw a couple does. You better bet that I will be hunting there Friday morning when I start my long break. Looking forward to a good week out in the woods...

That sounds pretty promising! I've always liked to hunt a rub line when you are able to find them fresh like that.

We had to put off the learning to shoot for a couple days but we still had a good weekend jsut the same. I'm planning on getting back in the tree on the 26th.

Wely weekend didn't exactly go as planned. I was on my way to get my hunting liscense and tag Friday night because I found out that my son had procrastinated on a school project and he needed pretty much all weekend to work on it. I hate to take him away from hunting but actions have consequences and I can't help the desicions he makes about his school work. Anyways I was on my way to Wal-Mart and about half way there I stop at a traffic light and notice some steam coming from under the hood of my truck. :yikes: :irked: So I got pulled off the road lifted the hood and couldn't really figure out what was going on for a minute. To make a long story short. I boogeyed my butt back home to figure out that the bearings on my water pump went out and it was spraying out around the shaft of the water pump. So instead of hunting Sat. morning I as out looking for a water pump for a 89 Jeep Commanche ( I know its an old one but it just wont die). needless to say noone in town had one so I had to order it in. The ggod news is that the wife felt sorry for me. So I went out yesterday and got my liscense and tag.

Went out last night at a different spot than my son and I have been hunting and saw 7 deer. I saw a half rack spike and 6 doe. I had one of the does at 30 yards but I didn't feel comfortable with the shot. I did here a buck rubbing and grunting off in the distance but couldn't get any visuals. still to many leaves on the trees in the woods. So I am going to be putting some points on the board here before long. :bouncy: :woohoo1:

Hey boys, haven't had to much luck lately. Just small bucks and does. Haven't been out as much as I'd like to. Last night I stopped by one of my grandpas younger buddies houses to check out his trophy room. It was unreal! He had a 203, 175, 156, B&C's. He also had about 10 other Ohio Big Buck Club qualifers hangin there as well. He also had a buck with a 12 in. spread that scored 154. Talk about some mass. What was also impressive was the fact that all the deer had been killed on the same farm near the Coshocton/Muskingum County border. Only the 203 was killed on the neighbors property in a creek bottom. I asked him for his advice on killing bucks like that. He said, "Be really lucky and be in the right place at the right time." Well I hope the buck movement picks up soon. Hopefully they will get goin a bit by this weekend. Good luck to all.

Hey team, its been pretty quiet out there. How you all doing? I had a pretty desent day today. Got to hunt both this morning and evening. This morning was pretty uneventfull other than I got the BEGEEBEEZZZ!! scared out of me on the way to the stand. I was walking the edge of a woods in the field and a deer decided to blow at me when I got about 5 yds. away from him or her. Talk about freaking out. :yikes: I thought I might have to get the roll of toilet paper out of the backpack:biggrin: . I had one other deer blow at me once I got into the stand. I contribute that to the slow morning.

This evenings hunt was quite different. I saw a total of 13 deer. All where does and yearlings except for one. The buck was about 200 yds. away. He looked like a basket 6 or 8. This was the first time I have hunted this spot this year. Our church has some property that goes up aginst a farmers property. They have put in a small food plot in a small 2 acre wedge that butts up against the church property. I took my climber out there and had quite a night. I was drew back for a doe but she busted me about 8 steps to soon. I don't know if this deer qualifies as being pibald or not, but I got it on video. All four legs are white from the knees down. Pretty interesting I thought. The last hour the deer started pouring into the food plot. I saw a button buck try and mount another deer. That was pretty neat, never saw that before.

Going back tomorow morning before church to see what the mornings will be like. I'm expecting it to be just as good.

Here is the video of that deer.

Cool, looks like they're moving. I hunted this morning and had a close but no cigar moment. Had a group with 4 doe young come in 2 adults and 2 younger. I was going to take one of them and they decided to change course off the trail and head into the thicket about 10 ft before my opening. Oh well..... saw 8 deer total this morning. Can't wait to get out next. :)

Hey guys. Glad to hear you all got to do some hunting and had some luck.
Nice video Greg on setting up the lone-wolf sticks. Can't beat them suckers. Easy to put up and very stable.
I didn't make it out this weekend. I attended the buckeyes' game Saturday so I didn't make the hour and a half drive to hunt Saturday morning or Sunday.
I'm in Cincinnati Monday-Wednesday for work and then I'm off Thursday and Friday so I'll get to hunt quite a bit this next weekend. I'm hoping the big boys get up on their feet during daylight. Lots of people have had good luck on Halloween so I'm hoping the same happens for me.

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been keeping up much. Been having some family issues the past week, and haven't felt much like posting. I've been out the past few days, and have seen quite a few does, but no bucks yet. Hopefully between the rain tonight and the major temperature drop, the deer should be moving great in the morning. I'm hunting morning and evening until Friday evening when I head back to work. Really hope to fill my buck tag by then. Well, good luck to you guys. Hope someone busts a big one soon!

I went out Saturday and Monday evenings. Saw some deer but they all were little bucks and does. I sprayed a lil estrus near my stand and a small 7pt. followed it literally to my tree. My dad went out with me and had a shooter just out of range last night. I am hoping this colder weather gets them moving. I will be out tonight, Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday morning. Good luck guys, I think it is a matter of time before someone on Team DDT gets a good one.

They timbered where I hunt this spring and I'm wanting some advice on a stand I want to hunt.

With the timbering they've put some skidder paths through a couple of the thickets, which greened up extremely well and the deer are using these paths extremely heavily. Last weekend I set up where two of these paths intersect on the outside edge of the thicket. The paths run at about a 45 degree angle heading up the hill and the main ridge runs north/south. The problems is that the deer have traditionally used this thicket as a movement area to go up and down the hill as well as across. Well I had deer pealing off the trail to go up through the tangles instead of sticking to the trail that follows the edge of it. Would I be too intrusive if I followed the skidder path (which also serves as the deer trail) deeper into the thicket to set up? I found a fantasic ambush spot in there but if I don't follow the skidder there is no realistic way to approach the spot. Thoughts????

Great question Lance. I would say go for it. I think I would try to use some type of drag to lay down some scent on the trail as you are going in. Are you thinking of going for an all day hunt. If so if you screw things up going in in the morning then you have all day to sit there and let things settle back down. That my .02 for what it's worth.

quick reply before I go back out this evening. Stuck a doe this morning @ 10, got her quartered up and gave her to the landowners as appreciation for allowing us to hunt their property. Did see two small bucks cruising this morning together, and last night, I had 10 does pass my stand and not a single buck. Guess it's not quite time around here yet...Kinda bummed about that, but oh well. Will post a picture or two later on.

Great job there gf. Can't wait to see some pics. I was down at the church tonight. Not to hunt unfortunatley, but I did get to do some watching from a distance and I saw socks again running with her mom. It really bums me out though, watched her walk 20 yds from my one stand that I have hung at the church. I am going to be spending some time out there this weekend. I just wish the weather was going to stay on the cooler side. I am pretty confident on closing the deal on at least a doe this weekend. But you never know I guess we'll see.

GF- Well done. Congrats on yet another doe. Lance- I agree with Hoytmania. I would go for it. I think the dragline is a great idea as well. If you make into your stand undetected, I would try to stay there for as long as possible. On my way to work this morning, I saw two does out it a picked soybean field. They took off and I saw something cut in from the woods behind them with his nose to the ground. It was to far away to see a rack but I know it was a buck in trail. This was at about 8:00 this morning. I just talked to my dad. On his way to work he said he saw a giant just standing in a neighbors back yard. This neigbors yard is about 500 yards from my treestand. Its going to be a long day here at school. I can't wait to get out tonight. I think its definately starting to heat up. Good luck to all this weekend and be safe.

Going back out tomorow with my boy. He finally got all his school work back in order so I am going to let him get back into the woods. I think it was ablessing in disguise because it gave the spot we where hunting a good break. I was thinking about trying to use my 3D target as adecoy tomorow. To see what I can bring in, but I just want him o take any deer. So I don't know what to do because a buck decoy is going to scare off any does that come in. On the other hand I think a decoy would have a good chance at bringing in a buck. Let me know what oyu guys think.

Hunted Friday evening, and sat in a fence line, overlooking two nice cut bean fields. Saw deer from about 5 on, ended up seeing 31 confirmed, individual deer, but only 3 bucks. All 3 of the bucks we saw were young guys, and we never saw a one of them pester a single doe, not even so much as look their way. Things just aren't even close yet around our farms. I'm hoping the next chance I get to hunt (tues-thurs) will be a little more productive, as far as rutting activity and big buck encounters. I wish all you guys hunting this weekend the best of luck, and hope the heat doesn't mess things up for ya. I know I wish I could be out there right now, but I'm stuck working my 4 midnights...

Had a very long but eventful day. It started out with Austin and I going out. It was a very slow morning. After a few hours of nothing going on I started a little rattling sequence. Within a few moments I look diwn and there is this crazy looking spike at 20 yds. Austin gets his bow and proceeds to draw back(with his finger on the trigger of his release:yikes: ) At about 3/4 draw his trigger activates and the arrow goes flying. Because of the lost arrow and broadhead from the other small buck he shot he only has one hunting arrow. So we got to watch this spike roam around our tree for about 20 minutes. Here is a video clip of this dude. Check out this guys rack.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it8iravbLGQ

Well my son is having one of his boy scout buddies stay the night tonight. So that left me to myself for the evening hunt. Went down to the church and it was almost 70 degrees when I rolled through town. That sucked. Got up in the tree and things where moving rather slow till around 5:30 saw a doe in a small food plot that butts up against our church property. Looked at her through the glasses and realized that there was a desent sized buck about 25 yds. behind here. Watched him push her around the plot for a while then she finally ditched him. The later it got, the more deer that where coming into the plot. Saw a total of 8 deer. Eventually there where two yearlings that come up the path to my tree. I was enjoying the view and realized that momma was starting up the path as well. She finally got to where I could draw with out her seeing me, and of course after I draw she stops and locks up. This went on for about 2 minutes then she finally came in and gave me a shot. Arrow was a passthrough. Watched her drop from the stand.

When I got down I counted 8 steps to the arrow, and then counted 14 steps from the arrow to the doe.

So I am happy to say that the Hoyt has put some points on the board and there is some meat in the freezer. :bouncy:  :woohoo1:

That's great Hoyt! Mighty fine doe there.

This is completely off subject, but my dad drives for UPS up in your area. I'm pretty sure he delivers Mansfield, and I know he delivers Caldwell, and the surrounding areas. He said that he's seen 4 bucks hit this week on the interstate, so he thinks it's getting close up that way. Hope you can bust a nice buck in the next few weeks. Nice video also! Thanks for sharing.
