Just like last year...

I was able to put points on the board last year as well.....in the form of a doe. I never got a good look at a shooter buck last season...I am hoping that will change this year.
Hiller....you put down a nice buck last season...didn't you?
BTW...our team name is not set....we need to come up with ideas.

I'll do my part. Just to let you all know I have a curse on me. Every year I get a turkey in the spring I getta buck in the fall, and every year i dont get a turkey in the spring I dont getta buck. But I gotta bird this spring so I shouldnt have a problem. But I'll shoot a doe as early as I can

Yeah last season I only dropped about a 115" 6 point, he had me tricked into thinking he was an eight, but I was happy.... year before that was the big one at 156" gross.... and the year before that was a 115" 8 point....
I've been watching a few nice ones about every night on our farm as they are feeding in the beans... I'll hold out for something nice this year... I'd like to take something bigger than 125"...
Does will be no problem, if I don't take one the first morning I will be surprised...

LOL... I was just thinking about that last night when I was watching one of our fields... I thought man I hope that doesn't happen again this year and clear our farm of deer.... it wasn't the cow that was the problem, it was the darn people chasing it.... funny thing is they finally killed it about 2 months later and about 7 miles from our place...that thing was flat out wild!!! They said it took numerous rounds to take it down... it was something like a 5 year old cow... we were pumped at first, we thought we would get some free meat, but when we found out the age we passed....

Just checking in....This the first year for me in this contest and I am really looking forward to it. So for those that dont know me, my name is Shawn and I live in Greene County. I will be doing my hunting in Greene, Clinton, and Ross this year. I designated the bow (crossbow) as my weapon of choice. Anyway choose gun??
Well I guess we have to pick a team name, huh??
I guess the only weird part of thsi is that it doenst matter what your buck scores but how many points it has, so heres to someone shooting a 56 pointer that scores 115"...LOL!
Flippin 416
08-27-2008, 09:32 PM
This is our list of team members....
Flippin416, TripleA88, NooB24, Cal923, OHBOW76, Hiller
So it looks like the only one we are missing is NooB24.....hopefully they show up before the cutoff date.
So is everyone here shooting a bow or crossbow? I just switched from a Mathews Q2 of almost 10 years to a new DXT. I had a total ankle replacement in June and I am just now getting back on my feet so I am working out the last few bugs in it. But for the most part I am very happy with it to this point.
What do you guys think about team names? Any ideas that anyone has in mind?
What county is everyone hunting in? I'll be hunting mostly Tuscarawas and some Holmes?
Hey Hiller...I have about 200 pics on one of my trails cams from May of cows that busted out of our neighboring pasture...these cows destroyed my mineral lick site!!! lol

I'll be shootin a compound, Fred Bear Element, just bought it and Im comfortable with it. I'll be doing all my hunting in Clark County. I have 2 propertys to hunt, and five different stand locations total. IM not sure on team names?
Cal923
08-28-2008, 04:43 PM
My name is Cal ... just like the name chosen.. I'll be hunting cross bow.. i got a Ten Point phantom cls... wish i could shoot compound againlol.. oh well.. I'll be hunting Mahoning county and Columbiana county... I too should be able to take a doe early.. the past 2 years I've hunted Ohio i got my doe real early they come to 1 of 2 spots real good for me. Last year i got a nice 8 point and have seen plenty of bucks. I got numerous farms to hunt so I should be able to help get points for the team. This is my 1st year doing the contest also I joined the site after the teams were icked last year and have been looking forward to this season all summer. Question I have it says you have to check in... where do you do that to show you are still interested in the contest?

I'm heading up to my cabin around 8 am. Trying to get it sqared away for bear season and rifle season. Gotta get it done before the 27th so I can hunt everyday. Talk to you all on Monday.

Yeah this team is very quite....it makes it much more interesting if there is some chatter going on....we still have yet to hear much from cap ernie.
I finished hanging and moving a few stand this past Sunday....talk about a BAD day to be in the woods. When we started the wind was moderate making it not so unbearably hot to be out there. But by the time we finished up the branches and limbs that were coming down off of the trees kept getting bigger and bigger....I was very happy to be getting out of there.
I hung a stand in an area that I think, if I can control myself, I will leave alone until late October or early November. I also moved one of my cams to an area that I have a good feeling that bucks are using as a travel corridor...I'll find out this weekend. Other than that I am making my final preparations, cleaning and washing gear and shooting the bow on a nightly basis....9 days and a wake up and it's game time!!!
Triple A88....looks like you have some good things going in your area.....how much land do you have to hunt there??
Hiller.....do you have your buck patterned yet that you are going to use against the Michigan Maffia???
Let's go fellas lets have some fun with this!!!!!
Hiller
09-17-2008, 11:51 AM
I've got a couple of bucks in mind, one in particular that i have been watching on a regular basis... I know where he eats and sleeps, just a matter of being able to slip in undetected and stick him..
Was out pulling trail cams today and found one was missing, looks as though a quad had pulled right up to it... they ran a bunch of our corn down too... I'm going out here in a few minutes to figure it out on my own since anytime anything gets stolen around here the sheriffs seem to turn the other cheek...
Hopefully I can get it back, I got a good idea of who took it....
Cal923
09-17-2008, 05:42 PM
Finally got my power back on. Lucked out none of my stands got damaged .. moved a tree off of a major trail I sit up off of during rut. So not too much work needed thankfully. I didn't check the bedding areas tho... I figured it's too close to the season to be tromping through there to see how different it looks now. You all think fallen trees will make them move from where they bed?
TripleA88
09-17-2008, 09:42 PM
Its around 90 acres, 25 woods where we hunt, 5 acres on the bordering woods to the east, and around 25 again to the northern section.
Flippin 416
09-18-2008, 06:16 AM
Hopefully you can put the sneak on that buck you have been watching Hiller. That sucks about the trail cam being stolen....I know I would be a little PO'ed if someone walked off with one of mine. Was it on private land?
Cal...we are still witout power at this moment. Ours went out Sunday evening about 25 minutes before the Browns game....which from the sounds of it....was a good thing so I didn't have to watch that!! lol They are telling us that we should have it back at midnight Friday. About the bedding arear and the fallen trees.....I am guessing that if a tree fell directly on their bed...they move a little but I would certainly not think they would move totally out of the area.....there's more to an bucks home range than just his bedding area?

Sorry boys I am real busy with school.
Don't worry. I spoke with the farm last week, and the honey hole is still mine. He has been seeing a big one out there almost every morning. The other neighbors have been seeing them too.
And my best friend's camera is getting some real big racks, so those woods are cranked to. My season will be short, but should be the best as far as numbers and quality.
I will get my areal pictures up when I get a chance.

Very cool Cap't Ernie....I like it!!!! Thanks!!!
So where are you going to school and what are you studying? You gonna have much time to get out and do some hunting?
I am hunting with a bow again this year...this will make my 9th year bowhunting. I picked up and new Mathews DXT this spring and can't wait to get out in the woods with it.
Three days and a wake up!!! If the opportunity presents itself I am hoping to pick off a doe as soon as I can.

If all goes well and I can keep the white trash neighbors off of our property I"m fairyl confident I'll have one on opening day... I won't shoot a doe in the evening though, just don't feel like tracking one in the dark if I had to...
I'm shooting a Bowtech Guardian this year with G5 Montecs

I am going to school over in PA at Grove City College. It's about an hour north of Pitt
I will be home for the extra weekend of gun season and part of muzzleloader season. My best friend has a piece of woods he swears no one will hunt until I get home, so I feel like even though my season will be short, it will be very sucessful.
Because of the my little time available, I didn't sign up for the contest, but I was added in as a sub. I will contribute in any way I can!

This is my 7th year in the woods. I dont use trail cameras, well not yet but last I checked I left 4 different bucks from last season. Late january I consistently saw a 10-8 and two 6's. The 10 and 8 should be in their prime, hopefully there in the area. But as I said before, does shouldnt be a problem. Rut and late season(January) is when I see most action/ movement. Good luck guys

Hiller,
So I see your resorting to the crazy bad a%$ routine to get your point across. I find it to be highly effective with those of lesser mental capacity, and it seems its all they understand.
My buddy in Ross was having issues with vadalism, stuff stolen, etc. He is a very trustworthy guy (too trustworthy at times) and I had a feeling it was being propagated by this two faced jerk who lived at the front of the property access point. So one day I just happen to drop in conversation that if I ever caught anyone back on his property God help them. I went on to say that if I ever found an unattended vehicle back there that they would be needing four new tires and could explain to the sherriff why they need a tow off private property.
I also made sure he knew that I was always carrying Concealed when up there. Almsost all problems stopped after that.

Well no luck this weekend ... But lots of activity around me today .. I saw 6 does... 1 mature doe 15 yards came up behind me couldn't get a shot... then had a young doe in bow range for a long time.. but she couldn't have been over 1 1/2 yrs old.... so I passed on her ... They are crossing that grassline like crazy like I hoped they would... You guys having any luck?
Hiller
09-29-2008, 07:13 AM
Well, I saw the buck I've been watching all summer... he came out into the beans just like clockwork... however he was about 50 yards from me the entire time and just never ended up feeding close enough for a shot... might try her again tonight if I can get over there fast enough... still not sure if I'm going to shoot him or not... he's just right on the borderline of being big enough... problem is I want a 125" buck, and he already has two broken tines... if they weren't broken he'd easily go in the mid to high 130's... oh well...
I also passed up 3 does last night in hopes I would get a shot at him... we'll see what the wind does tonight, if nothing else I will hit another stand and try to whack a doe...
Flippin 416
09-29-2008, 09:48 AM
I was able to get out Saturday morning for a few hours. I didn't see a deer!!!! I saw a few turkeys and that was about it. I know the deer are coming through the spot I was in so it's just a matter of being patient. I MIGHT be able to get out one night this week and then I am going to hit it hard this weekend.
Hiller
10-03-2008, 09:01 AM
Any luck guys??? I haven't been doing too well... biffed a chip shot the other day on a doe... gonna head out tonight into the oaks again and see what I can do... if nothing shows tonight in the woods, then I'm concentrating on cornfield edges and bean fields...
Flippin 416
10-03-2008, 05:50 PM
Nothing yet....I have only been able to get out once as my schedule seems to keep getting busier and busier. I am headed out tomorrow AM and hopefully tomoorw afternoon as well. Next week looks a little less busy so hopefully I'll get some evening hunts.
Biffin a chip shot on a doe is allot less heartbreaking than biffin one on a shooter buck. Good luck this weekend!!

Went out for an evening hunt yesterday....good news ... once again i seen 4... bad news ... they cam the opposite direction i thought they would and busted me. I'm definently seeing deer... just unable to get them in range so far this year. I've been racking my brain how to set up on them in order to get them in range... then again.. I'd probably move and they'd go where my last set up was lol.

The very first deer that walks within bow range of my stand....happened to be a pretty nice 10 point that I have pics of from my trail cams. I was sitting in my tree kickin around the idea of getting down for the morning, wind was blowning leaves were rattling...couldn't hear anything when all of a sudden I catch movement behind and to the right of me. I immediatley saw that it was a buck and knew WHICH buck it was...so I stand up turn to my left hoping to catch him as he passed 10 yds behind my stand.....wasn't meant to be....he walked right behind me while I was fighting to get turned and in posistion to draw on him...so I had to let him walk to what I was guessing was 20-25yds. He stops...I settle in between my 20 and 30 yd pin and release the arrow. He kinds of jumps just a little and trots maybe 10 yds and stops.....he looked every direction but up. Put his head back down and continued moving towards the CRP field that he has been bedding in....I shot under him. He was just a shade over 30 and I was guessing him to be 20-25..plus I nick a small twig which I am sure helped push the arrow down. It was awesome to have a chance like that and I am just about sure I didn't mess his pattern up too bad since it looked like he had no idea what happend and kind of brushed it off....I'll be back....and standing this time!!!! lol

Well I hit the woods tonight, same stand as I hunted a week and a half ago where I killed my last doe. Everything was pretty dead until about 40 minutes before dark... thats when I caught site of two bucks dogging some does about 200 yards away in the neighbors bean field.
I grabbed my rattling antlers and grunt call, and made some noise... the buck heard me and looked over in my direction but made no quick attempt to come investigate.
After about 4 minutes he headed towards the cornfield I was hunting, but not in my direction... I rattle a little more, and then just sat back down... about 20 mintues later I saw him standing under the same stand I killed my big ten out of 2 years ago... I hit the rattle bag again and did some grunting... with the sun setting I began to wonder if I would ever see him again... right then I looked down the treeline to my left and saw the birds start taking off is every direction
At that point I knew something was coming so I stood up and got ready, right then I heard a cornstalk crack... I knew it was game time... within seconds he appeared behind me coming through the brush...
He literally walked right past teh tree I was setting in... I came to full draw, trying to make the almost vertical shot... I got him stopped at 7 yards and let her fly.... Right then I knew I had double lunged him( did anyone hear me screaming after the shot ) He went about 75 yards and went head first into the high grass...
WOW!! I am pumped, 14 scorable points, main frame 10... any guess on score... I'm guessing around 130's or so maybe high 130's the junk may put him into 140 but I don't think he'll go non typ....

It's right .. 5 points for the doe... 5 points for the buck plus 14 points for numbr of points over an inch... a 10 point buck is worth 15 points... 14 point buck is 19 points so on..

I went out later then I should have yesterday... I got in the woods at about 8 am.. way after the sun came up... decided to not sit my stand.. instead went to the corner of a big field because I knew they released phesants with all the shooting that was going on.. seen a little 6 point and a couple does... decided to go back out there tonight.. once again getting out there later then I should have.( had to watch my kid) kicked a nice buck on my way out... so I figured my hunt was over but I stayed out .. about 45 minutes after I got to my spot a doe came out... she was a nice doe.. finally a nice doe in range (under 25 yards off)... I pulled up my crossbow getting ready to let the arrow fly man was I excited.. but there was a tree in the way of the vitals.. go fiure right.. I was waiting for her to take 2 steps to give me a shot behind her shoulder... never happened because this guy stepped out from the thicket grunting away ...

I am planning on heading out this Saturday and do either an all day sit or sit both the morning and evening. I tell ya what....I have never had a season where I have seen fewer deer than this year. I usually have at LEAST one doe by now if not two, yet this year I have yet to even see a doe within bow range!!!!! I didn't change hunting areas..nor am I doing anything different. The only deer that I have had a crack at was a buck a few weeks back that totally caught me off guard...I hope things turn around starting this weekend....

11-06-2008, 07:26 PM
Ok ... some ideas on what coulda caused this... I was hunting the same field i got my buck .. only on the other side... I walked in saw 2 scrapes about 50 yards apart and a bunch of trees tore up so I put up in between them.. making sure to stay off thier trails.. anyhow.. In the evening it was slow.. i hit the grunt call just to see what would happen... all the sudden it took off on a dead run... 2 minutes later I hear a loud snort .. from behind me.. I turn around just in time to see the doe bust out into the field ... she was snorting like no other... but wasn't even looking my direction.. then she turns walks back into the woods same path she just ran out of... about another minute she did it again... busting out of the woods snorting tail flying running towards me...she ran right by me .. never stopped... nothing came out in the field after her .. and i was trying to look through the wood line to see what was going on...nothing...this is the second time something like this has happened

I didn't get great pics with mine because I had to get it on ice so quickly...never got a negative comment about it.. i think they are talking more about trying too.. up until this week it's been to warm for me to pose if i wanted too... I have a long drive to a check station... so the deer is already been dead in the heat for the hour I let it lay... the 1 1/2 hours it took me to gut it and get it to the truck (first time i gutted 1 hand) had no help this time took me a while...and a 25 mile ride to and from the check statioin...they wanted us to try to get nice photos but for some circumstances it's too hard to do so... be proud and post i would

Oh yeah just bought a new house, I back up to CC reservoir in Warren County, water is a 1/4 mile walk back through the woods. Right around the corner from the release area for pheasants. Jabbing. No, I didn't specify. Since I signed up as an alternate, I never saw anything about that, so I will default to firearm.

Yea Im still at it, I'll be at it till the end. Like I said before season, late January has been good to me. Seen alot of activity around then. Ive been driving around and it seems the deer in my area are moving right at dark and have gone nocturnal. Were behind a 16 points. Maybe a doe and a lucky buck can bring us back.

+5 for my doe.
That puts us at 51 points, 11 behind the lead...
Flippin! You've got to shoot a 12 pointer!

Congrats on the doe, doesnt have to be a 12 point, can be a 7 point with the + 5, then i think we could take lead again.

Deer were very skittish today. Seen 5 does, missed one at 80 yards. Would have been my 3rd this season. Oh well, Im gonna rely on muzzle loader then late January to score a buck. Good luck guys.

Do you have a buck left too? We could still win this.

You know whats ironic about the 7 point comment....the buck I hit on November 8th...was a big 7 point. We found out that a guy two farms over from us killed him the same day I hit him. Walked up withing 10 yards of him laying in a cornfield and put a crossbow bolt through his chest. Irony at it's finest. I do have the 5 points for my button buck that I will get posted...but I am not done by a long shot....congrats on the doe!!!

Thanks guys. Now I gotta go out to the garage and skin her. Burr!
Good luck to the rest of you guys, I'm done hunting for the year. I'll be out of state for muzzleloader.
And yes, we're at 51 point, just 11 or so behind, but we did fall to 3rd place.

2 does or a buck could end it. I still have a doe tag and buck tag. I think we can enter two does instead of a doe and a buck. But not sure.
Flippin 416
01-12-2009, 06:35 AM
I was just having a conversation last night about whether or not we could enter two does....I didn't think we could but upon reviewing the rules...it appears as though we can!!! I still have a tag left that I would be more than happy to put on a doe....but we need more than one.
SCORING:
- (Bow Hunters) Each bow hunter will be allowed to submit 1 antlered and 1 antlerless deer or 2 antlerless deer. Both must taken with their chosen weapon for scoring.

Nice run guys. Its been fun. Wish I could have contributed more. Congrats again to Hiller and I think Cal on the 14 and 12 point, and to the rest that put up 5 points worth.
