Just checking in also. Glad to see we got the biggest trash talker from last year on our team, Big H. Looking forward to sharing the hunting season with you all. I live in Lake county which is good for does all year. I'll also be hunting down at my camper until we close it up for winter. That is at Mohican in Ashland county. Hopefully I can get into a nice buck this year as I won't shoot a small one. Dearhunt, I was out in your neck of the woods about a month ago delivering equipment to a customer of mine who was drilling at Bluffton College. Now if I can just find some time to get in the woods scouting.

Just a bit HL ;)
I like Over the Ridge Gang but I'm open......and older :D
Alright! Glad to see this team is all set (except for a name and that ain't all that important). Great to have to you all as teamates. Somebody  made us a preseason favorite already and insinuated (jokingly) that I had set up a dream team. Not so and there are many good teams and a lot that I'm sure will surprise when the fur starts flyin.
I haven't filled my buck tag in four years now...I'm picky ( solid P&Y buck or better ). Had a solid one "get away :( :nono: " three seasons ago, let a 10 pt 120ish walk two years ago and last season never got on the big boy, actually didn't even kill a deer cause I let the doe walk (early) and young bucks all walked again... as usual. But I look at it this way, I'm due and there's lots of bucks around the area I hunt. I am definitely taking an early doe this year, not opening day but hopefully in the first 3 weeks of bow season.
My last day in the deer woods last season was January 20, 5 degrees with a wind chill, so I don't give up easily. Actually stalked up to within about 30 yards of 3 doe but couldn't get an arrow off before they busted me.
It's a long season, so you all keep in touch and perhaps a couple of us can get together for a weekend hunt. That would be cool.

We got one of the token gun hunters in the contest! (and I heard your the best) :D Glad to have you Sam. This should be a lot of fun. I'll be taking my rifle to Michigan again this year, I hope. I rarely hunt gun week in Ohio although I will be out during muzzy weekend this year and hopefully still not trying to fill a bow tag!

Yes Ron, a little Buckmaster, aka Brendan Joseph Buckmaster. I know the feeling: I went to my camp during 2008 on July 4th and last weekend to set up stands. TWICE! I'm glad my father is picking up my slack. He can retire once Brendan is able to mow the grass.

Congrats on the little one Buckmaster. By the way that post you did last year as oldhat was classic. You know the GQ pose one with the doe & him & Tip holding hands. I almost peed myself reading that. I like the thought of getting together for a hunt. Have to see if I can pull that off with the family. I'm also good with any name. The name don't mean squat. But yes we must keep our young team member in mind with that right HL. Hey at least if we get together for a hunt we have a young guy to do the dragging :D . It seems our team thread is pretty busy compared to the others. Could be the competition is a little nervous.

Hey H: I still got a piece of jerky left over from last years kills if you need a crumb......heheh anything to help a brother out!
Ah man, I can feel it, this is gonna be your year, you are at least gonna get you a doe kill! I do hope you are not suffering from scurvey and have enough energy to hunt, you know with the weight loss, prozac, and all....hey man, not all of us were cut out to be "hunters", some have to assume their role of "gatherers" and child barers. So with that said...could you go gather me a beer beeeyatch!

I'll tell you what, if you have something to communicate or share with a certain team or individual on the team, by all means DO. But, let's try to keep the trash talk posts off the team threads...I created a thread for that stuff. I realize it's mostly good natured stuff, but...
With that, I am going to let the teams moderate their own threads...I hope I get no complaints.

Well team (Deerhunting Real Time) ;)
Got my cp off the shelf last evening, haven't shot in a couple months  ...waited till almost last shooting light. Started showing off for my grandson. Shot 5 groups and 3 out of the 5 the arrows were all touching, (was trying to robin hood one for him). He was picking the spots (grandpa, shoot the deer in the eye, in the tip of the nose, in the butt...lol) and asking a lot of questions ( he just turned 7). I impressed him as well as myself :D Now I know that part is ready. The bow felt great, is dead on and I felt comfortable shooting....so there's no excuses to be had there...now my recurve comes out and I start shooting it again...
I have 2 stands to set yet, one is a new location :mischeif: I'm torn between hanging the new storm door tomorrow morning or going scouting, hang a stand and plink a few groundhogs...hmmm decisions decisions...have a great Labor Day guys!

This might seem small in the scheme of things. However, I was able to breathe a sigh of relief today.
Got home from work last evening and the central air was out, no compressor start. So I checked what I was comfortable with and could check to no avail. Thank goodness it cooled off some last evening. It's been in the 90's here everyday. Anyways, I said a prayer to my angel in heaven (my son) that this was not going to be a major expense right now and went to bed.
This morning I was fortunate to get a hold of a relative who works for a local HVAC Co but he was booked! I got a hold of another company and by luck they had a guy in the area who could stop and check it out about noon. I was thinking shot compressor (16 years old now). The HVAC mechanic was here from 12 to 12:30 and had it fixed. Bad capacitor on the compressor side. He had the part on his truck...back in business...$100 bucks. I thought that was a deal. Sigh of relief :coolgleamA:

Well here's the new property I'm working on this coming weekend (red line is the border). I will hang a tree stand along the creek near a crossing (there are several points they cross at), possibly where the red x is. Also, the green spot is a copse of small trees about 15 ft in diameter. I plan on a ground blind in there. The top of the pic is N. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Where is the primary bedding area, and what crops are in the fields?
deerhunt45
09-09-2008, 09:34 AM
It's hay fields to the north and east. Just brush and shoulder high grassland west of the lane. They use that as bedding area. The big boy I'm looking for has a sanctuary to the SE just across the road.
uncle odie
09-09-2008, 04:24 PM
45,is that a wooded area in the SE corner where the creek takes a little jog to the NE? is there any mature woods or bedding areas to the E? looks like a possiable staging area before ventureing out into the field. mostly W and SW winds i'm guessing. all my jibberish is just a thought, but it looks like a dandy area for Mr Big to be hanging out.

lol just so you know i was looking at that little jog in the creek as well:D it looks like a no brainer to me on this one. i have a similar farm in pickaway county. i'd say find were they cross the creek in that jog by the woods the wind would be perfect and they feel safer earlier there. great place and the bigger section of timber is where the most will be bedded..I THINK

LOL, that makes 3 of us. Are they using the fields now? It looks like a great spot to ambush a cruising buck during the rut. Maybe put a decoy out in the field.
deerhunt45
09-09-2008, 06:04 PM
Yes that corner jog is a small area of timber. The road makes up that east border. The creek the south border. If I shoot the deer and he bolts back across the road it is OB. The property owner will not let you over there for any reason. If the deer runs south across the creek, north or west I'm fine.
It's hard to see without a topo, but there is a swale in the fields south of the southern border that runs SE, across the road into what is a huge sanctuary. I would think this would be natural travel route. The red x is towards where this swale meets the creek crossings...I think. I will finalize exact locations this weekend. I haven't walked the whole property or creek line yet, did some glassing. The deer use this area to stage to cross the road to the N, this section has about 700 acres of undeloped land with cropland, water, woods and hay fields. (which I also have permission to hunt. But I think the buck I'm after from the SE is only crossing the N road during the night and during the rut. The rest of that to the N is mostly hay. To the south and west is drainage ditches, lowland and chest high grass.

09-09-2008, 06:33 PM
Wish I could be more help on this for ya 45. I have never really hunted any farmland deer. All my 20 years of bowhunting have been in large tracts of mature hardwoods. If you have a climber I think I would setup in that SE corner where the other guys were talking about along the creek. Set up high enough to see out in that swale. If the big boy you're after is following that swale you'll see him without spooking him if the wind is right. Then mark his crossing & go back when your wind is right & DRT him. If he has cover from his sanctuary to that creek my guess would be he's following that creek. Not only can he stay in cover to get to the field your seeing him in, but after being bedded down in the heat all day he has plenty of water to quench his thirst in route to the field. Good luck with that big boy.

Thanks Woodland. Yeah, a big boy made it through last season. My plan is to set the stand and a blind this weekend, then not hunt it till the rut. I'll hunt my other property and take an early doe off there. Then try and slip in there and whack him. I may be hunting a ghost too...

Sorry sam, I missed this post. Right now it is set aside to the immediate south 50 acres or so. I didn't set a stand or blind this morning due to rain and some thunderstorms in the area. Hopefully tomorrow morning. I looked at a nice tripod stand at Menards. $350 for it. It's out of reach for me right now....I like that ground blind location too.

Hey guys, I'll keep this thread on the first page...;)
Well I went and scouted the creek this afternoon. The owner had mowed a nice path all the way along the treeline for me :) Waded down the creek most of the way. Located a couple crossings but not a lot of heavy sign...yet. No trees near either on my side of the creek that are good for a hang on that I had with me  So I went to my other property and took down my 15 foot ladder stand and will take it over and set it tomorrow. The main thing is getting a stand back there right now. I won't hunt this stand until probably the 3rd week of October or maybe later depending on sightings. I have several vantage points on this property to glass areas at distance and the property owners reports to go on, so I can adjust on the fly.
sam, that little copse of trees is going to be perfect for a ground blind! Oh, here's icing on the cake. There is a small gravel pit in the middle of the hay field and in the side of a hill directly to the north on the adjacent property. I have permission to hunt this property. There's some round hay bales sitting in the field up there  This might make a great ground blind and ambush point!
Heck I could drive right into the blind, should I camo my truck
Keeping busy!

Well 72 hours without juice or phone, finally got most of the yard cleaned up. Went for a walk in the woods this afternoon to check for damage there. Found one big old hollow red oak down, lots of firewood in it. Opened a big hole in the canopy. A couple smaller trees down also. Jumped a 120 class 8 point, and flushed a few woodies off the pond. Really starting to get the itch.:)

I hiked to one of my stands tonight and checked a couple of my buddies on the way out, mine is farthest about 3/4 of a mile. Trees and limbs all over but stands ok. (and still there...can you believe the thievery that goes on anymore  :irked: )
Had the chainsaw with me of course. It was thick walking, the weeds are still up chest high and the swamp grass is thick green and fluffy yet. Very little water down there either :nono: . Had to cut some on the trail and in a couple shooting lanes, BIG branches down. Hard walking for this ole dude but at least I got the trails opened up so the deer can use them :D
I'll place the last stand by this weekend. I got next week set aside to clear the honeydo's for selling the house. Can't wait to get in the stand :)

One thing is for sure after this power outage...I'm gonna start saving to buy a generator. After I secure the generator I'm going to start saving to buy the generlink device that South Central resells. I'm not going to go through all this again and put my family through it if I can help it.
Ohiosam, I hope you get power soon man. It's lonely out there, but at least were not city-fied city folk that go nuts! Actually not having power was somewhat relaxing...I actually got to read some of my hunting magazines!

Got a lot of crap done around the house tonight. My wife calls me this afternoon as she is getting off work and tells me she's got a flat...good thing for AAA! The came and put her spare on, so when I got home I was able to plug her flat and switch the tires back out. Then I put away some camping stuff from a family trip a few weeks ago, burnt some old bills, papers, etc. along with 4 flower plants the wind up rooted. Then I started in on the garage! What a mess! I have tons more to do on it also...dang!

Minor damage to buildings around here. I lost 1 shingle off the garage and a screen door was damaged. A church right by where our lines are down lost it's steeple. Wind came out of the south, so it hit some trees that were normally protected. We had big parts of 6 trees come down in the yard + some along the fields. We had a tree come across the road, so cars started driving up through our yard:irked:
Guys with orchards are saying 20-30% of the apples are on the ground. Some fields of corn are flat.

Yes! Finially!:) My little neighborhood had 1/2 dozen dairy farms with nearly 800 cows, a hog farm with 800 to 1000 hogs, the feed mill trying mill 100-150 tons of feed a day, the packing house with freezers full of meat from the county fair. All trying to get by on generators for 6 days. Lots of irritable farmers in the neighborhood. We still don't have phones, hopefully by Monday.
Hopefully the rest of you will have power real soon.

Well, boys, after getting the new string on my bow last week, and putting a trophy taker drop away on, I was finally able to fire some broadheads through tonight. It was very interesting with this setup that I tuned myself, that I only had to make minor adjustments to my sights between my field points and broadheads.
In years past, when I had a pro shop set up my bow, I had to make major adjustments in my sights to sight in my broadheads. It was so bad that I almost considered buying another sight where I could switch them out when I wanted to change what tip I was using. I guess I got lucky this time.
Anyhow, the broadheads were flying good and true. Arrow shaft penetration was horizontal to the ground out to 30 yards. It made me get a little excited about this Saturday.
I also got my meat pole built, and stand hung, apples dumped, the only thing left I have to do is go through all my equipment and clothing to make sure everything is in order. I've seemed to procrastinate this year, but my life has been busy!
Here's hoping that everyone has a good and safe opening weekend.

Hopefully I can start concentrating a little more on the upcoming season. At least I've been able to get in some shooting. Got a new Ameristep Intimidator ground blind for me & my 6 year old daughter to hunt out of. Man is this thing nice. Couldn't beat the price either off ebay, new in the box. That will come in handy at the camper for hunting Mohican State Forest. I'm not going to hang any stands on public hunting grounds as they will probably just disapear. Fishing was tough, they haven't moved up into the river in big numbers yet. There were some fish on the "reds", but not yet prime, they need another good rain to get it really going. It was a great time though, we floated the river in those little personal dual pontoon rafts/boats, and whenever you saw a spot to fish, you just rowed to the bank and fished the area.

Ya know, I'm really kind of laid back tonite. I have everything I need ready, stands ready to hunt. All kinds of choices of where to sit. I am trying to logic through them and pick the one to ambush a big boy tomorrow. Probably come home tomorrow with some pictures of a little buck I let walk again. If I can kill a doe early morn, I will, that way I can get it to the processor while they are open. Otherwise since I don't have trail cams, I'm out there to enjoy the day and get more of an idea of the bucks on the property this year and possibly move a stand if need be. Always a couple bigguns there and it's early:D
I'll be on here finalizing the contests for a bit. Then off to bed. I will leave here at 5:00 am in the morning. 45 minute drive. Best of luck tomorrow to everybody that gets out! I most likely will be chained to this house on Sunday and Monday :dizzy: :nono: Again, it's early.
Congratulations on being so well represented on the OS team. Here's to a great season, hunt hard, hunt ethically, hunt safely and have fun!
Oh and when I said I was kinda laid back? I lied...I'm pumped about just getting out tomorrow in stealth mode and seeing what I can get close to. I want to shoot something besides a 3d target with my bow :bouncy: Squirrels might even be game tomorrow...lol :coolgleamA:

No real news here...got to my stand later than planned yesterday morning, about 6:30 or so. Was just trying to get in the stand and get settled. Ended up with several deer (couldn't yet see well) that were already filtering through the woods from the cornfield to the west (there must be several hundred acres of corn surrounding my area) busting out of there :nono: No snorting that I heard, just skeedaddling from my noise
Saw two doe about 8:30 but they were 60 yards away on another trail heading to bedding area. Had a 1 1/2 year old doe come in behind me from my right at 8 yards and took the trail walking dead away from me back to the cornfield at about 10:30, oblivious to my presence but I didn't have a decent shot. Was ready for more to follow but she was all alone...Saw no bucks. Not worried too much, it's early.
Got a call last evening at about 10:30 that they admitted my brother to the hospital. Went up there early this morning. Turns out it's gallbladder problem. He'll most likely be relieved of that problem this evening, first thing tomorrow.
I plan to be out tomorrow after work for the evening hunt. Later...

09-28-2008, 08:49 PM
Well I made it into the wood yesterday morning trying to finally seal the deal on an opening day bow kill. I had to hunt a stand I normally would not hunt on opening morning because of a wedding we had to attend later on yesterday. Unfortunately I saw nada.
Went out this morning and saw two does at 145 yards shortly after 7 am. Then I had a doe come into the tree line where I was perched on my stand at about 8:30. She was only 12 yards from me, however, I did not have a shot. She ended up walking through the tree line, at an acorn and then hopped into the corn. That was all I ended up seeing this morning. I also had a camera watching this stand. This is stand I had planned on hunting opening morning, however it is 45 minutes from the house, and I wanted to be close to the house so I had more time to get ready for the wedding that was 90 minutes away. Anyhow, I pulled the camera and saw pictures of two does that stopped right in front of my stand at 9 am yesterday morning. Had I been in that stand, I would have had a good opportunity to finally connect on an opening day bow kill...oh well! That's how the cookie crumbles.
This evening deer attack and I went to a new property we got permission to hunt this year. I got into my stand and about a half hour later I decided to get down because I was so uncomfortable. I ended up spending the rest of the evening just observing a big field. I saw several does in that field. It started to get too dark for my binoculars, so I headed to another field framed by woods. As I was walking into the field do to some more observing, I saw a high racked buck. I knelt down real quick, and we he stepped in front of me I drew back, put the pin on his pumper, released the arrow and missed! :dizzy: As the arrow hit dirt he ducked, looked at me, and then slowly turned and walked off. I guess the good news is that it was a clean miss and I didn't seem to spook him. I'm going to go look for my arrow tomorrow as I think it buried itself in the freshly turned farm soil.
Tuesday I leave for a business trip and will be back Friday morning. Hopefully I connect on a deer this coming weekend. We can't let Francis show us all up!!!

Got to my parking spot about 4:15. It was gusty winds out of the west mainly, so I decided to still hunt. Got geared up and hiked N for a ways then put the wind in my face. Got into a rhythym with the wind gusts...2 or 3 little baby steps and stop for a couple minutes. Skirted several bedding areas but no deer. Still hunted around the property border along the corn fields to the west and south (which are out of bounds). Got back to the path to the truck about 7:30. Stopped and glassed a hay field and saw a doe with her fawn munching alphalfa about 100 yards out. Too late to try a stalk.

Well gentlemen, last night I got cut off so I called deer attack and asked him if I could sit in one of his stands. He agreed so I made the walk to his stand and got myself comfortable after cutting down a limb that would have impeded my draw. About 6:30 all hell broke loose. I had deer all around, but nothing worth shooting withing my range. Everything worth shooting was 60+ yards away. I did have a basket 8 directly under my stand, but did not want to take such an ugly rackrd and young buck. He'll be a nice one in a year or two.

Friday night I should have taken a doe. Couldn't see them real well through all the vegetation on the saplings. After they were by me in a creek bed I realized they weren't that small but couldn't get a good shot on one that I felt comfortable with. Tonight had 3 does sneak up behind me in a grown over clear cut. One winded me before they got in the open woods. 20 minutes later 2 more came sneaking through. As one was about to step into the open they were spooked by my brother in law who didn't stay in his stand until dark like he was told. He went to our trucks early and started hacking his brains out due to his cold. I told him if he would have been in bow range I might have taken him out of his misery. :nono: Oh well, a lot of season left and I won't be hunting anywhere near him from now on.:D

Good luck Woodland...it's time to get serious!
Forgot to mention in my earlier post...;)
I had just finished trimming shooting lanes out to 25-30 yards and was back under the stand I just moved gathering some things, cool off a bit and hike out. Two doe step out into the path about 60 yards to my left, no way they can wind me but I knew they sight busted me. I went about my business, all the while glancing in their direction. They saw my movement but didn't blow nor run off. I stepped a bit off the trail and watched them for a bit. They closed the distance by 10 yards or so before they cut off on a trail heading towards the watering hole. Everything is really dry here. We only got a quarter inch of rain the last two days which helped nothing but to keep down a little dust.
I heard a combine/harvester in a field to the west of me a ways... I hope it was in the corn field. I have corn bordering the property on 3 sides. My hunting area's food sources are a some acorns, good browse and alphalfa....oh and good cover when the crops are off and one big watering hole:mischeif:
My area will be covered up with deer by the end of the month and on into November. I can't wait and god willing, this ole boy will be out there trying to get me a freak daddy of my own :D

Because I like you, I'll let you in on the name of the team. Just go to the campfire...I'll be there shortly...if I'm not there by the time you think I should be, just wait longer. :mischeif:

Wasn't able to hunt at all this past weekend. Now it's time to get serious. I plan on spending a lot of time on stand during the next month!

sorry guys,i haven't been out the last couple days, been too busy.
had to bush hog my 25 acre field,i can see more turkey and deer now.had a couple other little projects to do.had to build a platform for Freak Daddy to lay on.i am going to stain it this afternoon, then smoke up and go out for a little while.
45,i took my cameras down in Aug,got tired of feeding the coons.been seeing quit a few large buck tracks around my pond where they have been watering, but there is a lot of corn still up and i think the big bucks are holed up in it.there are a few big one around here,so we going to as surprised as everyone else when they decide to show themselves.
