I've got one out in Noble co. that I will pick up next week and I have no idea what to expect as it is a new piece of land.
On the other hand I got this boy behind my house but I can't use him for the contest because it is in Maryland:(

benehunter
08-27-2008, 12:40 AM
It's the same one that took the pictures above, a Moultrie d40. I am thinking about getting another one, they are pretty cheap and take good pics.

I actually went to Noble co. last week and took my laptop to unload the pics. During the process, my laptop batteries died on me. I thought it downloaded the pics but when I got back to MD, I realize that I had only 6 pics. I know that there were more than 40 pics on the camera even though I only got to see a few. I will have to wait till next week as I left the camera there.

These are the first pics that I got there.

http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r381/benehunter/MDGC0018-1.jpg

As you can see they are all from the same day as they were the first pics to download on the computer....Will have to wait and hope something bigger is around.

l00k
08-27-2008, 01:46 AM
You should have a ton of pictures by now, I don't know if I could have waited that long....especially if it was new property. Keep us informed:)

I will be in Canada from the 29th of Oct. to Nov.12th so I will miss the prime time in Ohio this year. As of right now I am planning Ohio Oct.12th-19th, and another trip before Ohio gun.

benehunter
08-27-2008, 11:22 PM
I hunt both. Mostly private but both my bucks were killed on public ground. The biggest one in Salt Fork Wildlife area on my very first time there.

Recently I bought 40 acres in Noble but I am not sure if there are any big ones, only seen a small 8 that needs a few years. May be I will just shoot some does there.

I scouted Fox Lake in Athens last week but only seen does. However there are tons of good public hunting down there so either way we should plan something.

I will be going down to Ohio next week to check my camera in Noble so I will know more.

Also I am planning on scouting some other public land if time allows me before season kicks in. Any suggestions? I would like to try Wayne, AEP or Salt Fork.

Hey guys, just got back from Ohio. Had a great couple days camping and drinking:) . A bit dissapointed my trail cam got stolen and I won't know what was in it. I hate trespassers, I had to post the property in hopes they will think twice next time. I better never find one in my property:nono:

I also met the neighbors across which they had just moved in. Very nice people, we had some beers and talked around the fire pit for a few hours. I told them about what happen and they will keep an eye on my property as trespassers affect us all.

Sorry to here about your cameras...that sucks!! Did you have your cameras locked, not that it makes them full proof. What kind of camera did you have, I hope it wasn't one of the higher price ones. Someone needs to design a camera with a build in GPS tracking device, that would surprise a few people.

It was not locked and more likely it would make no difference. It was a cheap Moultrie d40 that I bought with my hard work earned money and that is what makes me real mad. If they make one with a GPS I would be the first to buy one. I am sure it wont be long before seeing one in the market.

Nah, I live on race rd, dundee strasburg is at the stop sign, when you turn by hardees, it is like 70 yards then you turn left mon my road. I see you live in sweetwater. We are pretty close neighbors. Im sure you frequent millers then? We will have to get together sicne we live so close. I hunt a lot in barrs mills for quackers and honkers. I have limited out everyday since monday on geese. and have shot a handful of doves through out the week also. Tues night 3 of us shot 35, and last night me and the womans brother shot 15. ITs good work for the dog, he lieks it.

I have been killing geese! THe occasional dove hunt sneeks in also. I have not really been paying attention to the deer. I see the occasional deer or two in some fields but nothing serious. I hung my stands in may. I dont really liek to be where I hunt until it is time to start killing! People dont realize the disturbance they make by jsut passing through. Sometimes it is the difference between seeing that big buck and not seeing him!

But the good news is you guys can still draw an alternate i am really sorry guys i was really looking forward to this again this year, good luck guys!

There are a few big deer around my area. I will jsut have to wait and see what happens. Saturday ngiht I am not gonig to one of my good spots, but I am gogni to go to a spot where I should be able to kill a doe. Although, the spot I am gonig to go to proved to be quit amazing the first time I hunted it last year. I went there on a whim due to a very nice white oak tree secluded amongst a bunch of elm and maple. I was there maybe 30 min when I had to yearlings come up and bed down. About an hour later they just jumped up out of no where and took off. Here the mother msut have been callnig them and I didnt hear it. then they walked over with her. I Was gonna shoot her until I heard more deer coming. I sat down and waited and dotn ya know it, a nice bachelor group of three bucks came in. One was a wide 8 pt, probably 17 inches wide, the other wasa nice ten that was probably 16inches wide and the other was a decent 8. I really believe they were all brothers. All looked to be the same age, I would have aged them all at 2.5 years old. All were spindly and didnt have any mass. After they had came in they all bedded down. Then about 6 other does showed up. IT was amazing, I could have shot anyone of those bucks about 10 times. IT was jsut an amazing thing to see. They always say the first ngiht in a spot is the best night. I think I will go there saturday night though and see what I see!

Guys i think i might have acouple of spots lined up including some public land that looks promising, in my 48 years here in ohio i have never had to resort to public land for deer hunting. I tell you it gets tougher buy the year. i did alot of scouting and talking with people because i knew i could not go a hunting season without hunting especially since i work in the hunting industry and i see all these big deer come in through the check in station. I am trying not to let the team down, and until i hear the 9 count i am still in.

What kind of hunt are you speaking of? Perhaps like a pheasant hunt??

Flippin416, you know it. Actually I have a new one this year that you might have seen before. haha It has the initials TG on it! hahaha

I went to another spot last ngiht that is probably only a 20 acre section of woods. I was really surprised at the sign that was present. I found 4 really good rubs in one close area and one hellatious scrape. This struck me as being kinda odd, its still very early for one this size. I found a nice tree to nest in, unfortunately I wont be hitting this spot untill next thurs night. I have other spots that need hit before then. Also last ngiht after an awesome dove hunt for which I limited out with 15 birds in 10 min of shooting. absolutely awesome. Anyway, when I got home I looked in the backyard by my garden and what do you think was standing there? I Would say he was probably 125inches, with a sticker off his left side. A nice buck unfortunately not a shooter for me, but I gurantee if he walks in front of the old man, he wont be standing long. haha It was kinda cool to see a nice deer standing in my yard!

Anyone else been seeing anything worth shooting?

Well, updating the team, my cameras have been up for about 2 weeks now. I do not have a date yet to go to ohio in the next few days but hopefully it will be within the next 2 weeks. Once I check my cameras I will decide if I hunt there or if I will go down to Athens Co.

Also I found 2 scrapes and a lot of sign behind my house here in MD, both are in my shooting lane. Went and got some corn and will set up my blind this week to try to hunt it after work in the afternoon.

Any luck with you guys? Anybody got to hunt today?

On another note, last time I went scouting one of the farms I hunt near Nelsonville about a month ago, there was a truck from Cole Outdoors parked by one of the fields. It sounds to me that something big might be roaming the farm. It stinks though that I am not the only one.

I set up in a ground blind, saw this doe came by and hung around for 20 minutes and left. I let her go because it was early and hoping a buck would show up; instead the doe came back and gave me a 10 yard shot. Dropped it on her steps, no blood trail needed:biggrin: . I shot it a little high but got one lung and the spine. The only problem, this was in MD so it doesn't count towards the contest:irked: .

It stood under me fro 5 min and wouldnt leave. Then it jsut walked away and never saw it the rest of the night. I coulda put us on the board but a 120 inch deer isnt what I am looking for. Next year he might be a shooter, but I have a 140 inch min. at the farm, so he walked. I saw soem does and another little buck but not what nothing worthy of a rage mounted gold tip arrow. As Im walking to it, not 10 yards from it, there were 2 nice bucks just hanging out. Both got spooked and didn't see them again. Well boys I cant hunt until monday, It is my weekend to work and I am out of comission untill monday evening. Last nghit was a great ngiht in the stand. had a 4pth coem in at 530, a doe at 6 and the 4 pt came back at 630 and bedded 40 yards from me. at 650 the doe came back behind me and I turned around to look as she past by. when I turned back around I saw a large bodied deer comnig rt at me down a grown up path. As it got to about 80 yards I thoguht to myself, oh man this is him. Well when it got to about 40 I realized it was a 2.5 y/o deer with an 18 inch spread, but only 7 0r 8 inch tines. H walked by perfect, 15 yards broadside not a clue I Was around. Well next thing you know the 4 pt gets up and we have a little tusslnig match between the two at 25 yards. I couldnt believe it. They did this until 745. I was stuck in my stand until 745! Then they stopped and walked away. Hopefully monday evening produces some antlers. WE will see.

Well hunted mon night and both morn and eve yest. Deffinately seeing a ltol of deer. YEsterday morning was a good morning. At 705 I had "The Boy" walk in. Unfortunately I just wasnt able to get a shot off due to low light conditions. Im here to tell ya, wow!!!!!! After him I had a 4 pt bed down beside me, had three does come by and at 9 I had 6 come in a single file line 5 yards past me and were none the wiser about my presence. I wont be back out until sat, but lets hope one does the same thing but about 5 minutes later.

Coshocton, be hunting in Coshocton or Muskingum. I never been there this early in season, I usually come around Halloween and stay for a few weeks but this year I will be in Canada during that time. I just hope deer move somewhat as good as I have seen in the past. If all else fails I will plan me another trip a little later in November.

Went out this morning and passed on a little 8pt, probably 110 inch deer. I didnt go out tonight, I am getting a little irritated at this deer business. To ease my strife I went and did a little dove hunting. My buddy and I shot 30 doves. The dog was tired after tonights mixed plethera of retrieves. We stood by the river at a gravel pit and birds were falling in the river, on the gravel piles, in the field, they were fallnig all over. Needless to say the pup wa s tired as crap tongiht. I will be back at the deer and nature watchnig tomorrow, cause god knows nothing with a decent set of antlers will come my way!:nono:

Good luck in Wy buckster.

I hunted OH the last 2 days. Saw a lot of deer but nothing worth shooting except a buck I spooked on my way out of the woods past shooting light. I almost got a shot at a turkey as a fock of 8 came walking to my stand. Even I was frozen, they still picked me from 35 yards and game over...2 more steps and the we would have a different story.:irked:

Found sign of trespassers with a fresh killed doe carcass :nono: but my stand and cameras were safe this time:) . Also I found a dead buck that Im not sure what happened to him:( . I posted pics in a different thread.

This is a picture I like as I think he has some potential in a few years. I guess him at 2 1/2 years old???

I just got back from my first Ohio trip and didn't bring anything back this time. The weather completley sucked, it was in the 80's most of the week with a full moon (My fault on the moon, but tried to get an early trip in) . I still manage to see some does and a few small bucks but nothing like usual. Deer just were not moving much at all during the day. I saw one HUGE buck several different times, but it was on the way back to my room at night standing in the front yard under an apple tree of a man's house...but he gave you something to think about before bed and made getting up early a little easier knowing it was going to be in the 80's. I still had a great time and hope to make another trip after I get back from Canada.

Well I didnt do much deer hutnnig this weekend sicne duck season came in but I did go out sat evening for a little doe management at my buddies farm. We both sat in the same tree and he had the video camera. Had a big old doe coem in at 410 with 2 button bucks and she milled around for a bit. I let her get to about 26 yards and he gave me the ok that he had good footage and she was in the clear for him and I let the arrow fly. Absolutely center punched her and she wheeled around and went about 60 yards and tipped over. The footage ended up being perfect, so If i can I will try and put it on here!

On my end, I was hunting out of my blind this afternoon and I had a small 8 point walked by at may be 6 yards. He was sooooo close but I chose to let him go. I got some nice video of him though.:D

I'm sure that is a sick feeling, but wow...thats awesome that you get to see a buck that size. With the Rut approaching who knows what you will see with that size of deer running around. As far as letting the team down, we will be fine either way...its all for fun, and you are having it. I still have a feeling you will you will produce though. Good luck to all the team as it should be getting interesting over the next few weeks.

Well guys I have come down with some sort of sickness over the past three days, I would assume its hospital related considering I spend most of my tiem here. I still managed to hunt the past two days. Not a whole lot of action with the wind but still saw movement. Saw some does and alst nghit I saw a great future prospect of an 8pt. 1.5 years old and would probably score somewhere in the 80-90 range, he was even starting g4s. I had him at 10 yards for about 30 min last night. My dad was set up abotu 50 yards down the ridge from me and saw a whole slew of does. I think he said 5 and one little scrub buck. Im stuck at work today and tomorrow. Friday-sunday I Will be out. WE will see what kind of fortune the deer gods grant me! Hopesulyl something good for once!!!

I must admit fellas, Im jsut not getting the good feelnig aobout this year. I have logged a ton of hours. I have seen more bucks this yearm, than I have in any other year. I am sitting in a 14 y/o paradise with than many bucks runnnig around. Last ngiht I sat in what I call my buck stand. I try not to sit in it in the evening due to how close it is to a bedding area, but with the wind and the rainy conditions I snuck in. I saw the 8 pt I spoke of in the previous post. Thats the 11th diff buck I have seen from that stand. Never have I seen that many diff bucks on this farm. On the other side of the farm I am seeing all does. Usually a herd of 8-12 all at the same time. Where I had the encounter with the big 10 was rt smack in the middle of the farm. I am starting to rack my brain to the point of confusing myself as to where to sit. Shoudl I stick with past years results and stay in my tree where I have had success before, where they usually seem to show up during the rut. Or should I venture to where I "think" the bucks are gongi to be moving.

I know everyone says to find the does and the bucks will be there, Ive said it before myself. There is one problem, I am having a hard time sitting where the does are because I jsut dont see the big boy comnig through there. We will see what happens this weekend, I seriously hope things turn around. I am gongi to live in that tree stand this weekend.

Well boys lady luck was with me this morning. I settled in the stand at about 0645. At first light when most deer movement occurs at what I have started to call "The Buck" stand, there was nothing. I became slightly discouraged. At 8 o'clock I looked over my left shoulder and looky looky what I see, Mr. Ten Point. Thats right, the same one who gave me the slip two tuesdays ago due to a branch. I stood up, grabbed my bow and got situated. He was on the same trail I normally see the does crossing over into the bedding area on. I knew if he continued to travel that route he would be at 15 yards behind my stand and in the wide open. Well he opted to take a little wider route and ended up at 25 yards. I had a decent opening, but not what I wanted to shoot through. I thought he was gongi to angle another way into a larger opening, well he didnt do that either. He ended up gonig into the thickest area around my stand. He was at 25 yards and I was franticly looking to find a hole I could squeeze an arrow through. I was kicking myself for not taking the shot when I had it earlier. Suddenly I saw a softball sized hole and drew back. He stepped in it, I grunted and wouldnt ya know, he stopped perfect in it. I settled my 20 yard pin a bit high and let her fly. I couldnt believe it, the arrow slipped through the opening and center punched the Deer I have named the "Lucky Ten."

As soon as the arrow hit he took off, at the time I didnt know I had center punched him. The funny thing was he didnt really run hard, he just kinda trotted off. He stopped at about 40 yards and looked back. All I could see was his head turning and looknig back. About 10 seconds later he took off sideways and piled up. I coulndt believe it. The deer I have velvet pictures of from 3 months ago, the deer I missed due to a branch over a week ago, and most importantly the deer i have been losing sleep over is now dead and in my hands. Its almost a bitter sweet ending to such a dramatic and stressful story to this years hunting adventures. When I got up to him and I sat down to reflect as I mostly do with my bucks and I was almost to the breaking point. This is probably the most emotional deer harvest I have ever made. So I guess now I sohuld probably show him to you huh??

I never did post the photo of my other doe I killed on the 16th of october. I wish I had a way to put the video up. She was a dig ole doe, I would say probably 3.5 y/o.

Hi guys, congrats to both Kaiser and Ohiotrapper for some great bucks down. :bouncy: :bouncy: :bouncy:

Kaiser I like the fact that you had this buck on camera and you set your goals on him. I bet it feels great to have him on the wall with a great story behind.

Ohiotrapper, I am not sure you posted a story yet but nevertheless great buck and also wide. BTW which county did you get him. Did you end up going to Dillon?

Looks like it is up to the out of state to put up some points on the board now. I personally have a lot of expectations this year. I came back from a weekend hunt in Ohio with a lot of movement but no kills. The first morning I rattled a small 6 pointer that hung around for what it felt like 2 hours. He even looked up my way in the tree but could not picked me out. Of course I was smoked up but I also have a great tree stand set up with some branches that really break my outline.

Later that day I saw a buck chasing a couple of does on the opposite hill. I grunted a couple times and little do I know the does are coming my way with a big one following. I get ready and as the does crossed a creek and into my shooting lane the buck changed his trail at last second enough to leave me with no shot:mad: .

Little dissapointed but that's hunting. Its all about spending some great time and I definitely learned a bunch as I get to know my land as well.

Ohh and I will post a picture of this big buck I almost get a shot at and hopefully I will next week.

All I need now is a little bit of luck.

Bene

Well I took the girlfriend out tongiht for her first ever bowhunt, wait, first ever deer hunt. We went out about 1530 and sat next to an area where I had been seeing some deer activity. At about 1650 i heard some leaves rustling to our right. I figured it was a deer as it kept getting closer and closer. Next thing ya know he popped out on our rt side and was comnig pretty steadily to my scent wick I had placed to stop him. He walked rt in at about 22 yards and my girlfriend emily made a perfect shot. He ran about 80-100 yards and I heard him crash. WE followed the blood trail and wouldnt ya know, there he was. Emilys first deer on her first deer hunt ever. Not bad huh?? I would liek to think she had a great world class guide! haha

I haven't been on much since my Canada trip and looks like you guys have been busy. Way to get it done Kaiser878, nice story and great deer. Glad it worked out for you, I had a feeling you would connect. I don't think very many hunters would every pass on a deer like that, I know I sure wouldn't. Also congrats on your girlfriends deer as well. Great season you are having. I am driving up for a 3 day hunt starting sometime tomorrow and maybe another week long hunt starting on the 23rd.

Whats everyone been seeing?? Anyone hunting?? Buckster?? Ohioarcher??
I have not been out since last wednesday morning. I sat in the same stand as I shot my buck in. I was there to shoot a doe. At first light had two young bucks come in and square off, thought for sure they were gonna go at it! Unfortunately they didnt. Didnt see anything else until 800 when a momma and little one came runing over the hill. She wouldnt stop and I later found out why. A dandy 8pt was rt behind em, he stopped at 25 yards broadside and stood there for about 2 min. As if to tempt me, Id say he was probably 130-135. A very nice 3.5 y/o. I just hope he makes it through the year.

Yes, I do believe it is gongi to be awesome! I am gongito video with my buddy as much as I can. Tongiht was an awesome night to be in a tree. Deer everywhere on my way to work. This snow will get em moving. The first snow always spikes the activity in deer it seems like! This week might be one of the best weeks to be out this year in my opinion!

I got back last night from my week long vacation in Ohio with no deer. Yeah, you heard that right!!!

I hunted starting Sunday the 10th all the way until last night. Only took some lunch breaks and an occasional nature's call. Passed a bunch of young deer, 90% of which were 4 and 6 point bucks. Also passed on a few does waiting to see what was on their trail only to find out they were alone or followed by a young buck.

I only saw the big one I am after once after he chased a doe out of the thicket and right back in. This happened on the first afternoon about 50 yards from my stand. Another nice but young 8 pointer did the same thing the day after.

On the other property, I found out as I arrived the 200 or so acre corn field was still up:irked: and I believe that's where all the deer were caused I only seen a 4 point. With the wind and rain all day, I even tried to stalk them in the corn with no success.

I conclude that I failed to locate the does during this time of year as the big bucks were keeping them in the really thick stuff. And I am not sure what else I did wrong.

I will try it again in a few weeks.

hang in there Bene, i have had a terrible year as well, this rut has been the worst and hardest to figure out in many years. I told my buddy tonight it's a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Last year it was early for me, this year it looks like i have been entered into the marathon instead of the sprint. I did get 2 yotes this morning :bouncy:

Thanks Ohioarcher I did see the 2 yotes on another thread. Nice job, I have never seen them while hunting, only hear them howling their lungs out at night.

Anyways I kept thinking I ve seen more deer on other times of year than now. Where is the rut? Did I miss something?

All I know is that I am a very patient and persistant person and my time will come. I hoped sooner but later is fine too. This season is just starting so just hang on.
