Awesome buckster! We needed the points. Forgive my memory, who is the gun hunter in our group?

I am not sure who signed up for gun. It wasn't me though.
On another note, I will be in Ohio to bowhunt this Sunday and then gun hunt the rest of the week.
Let's see if I can seal the deal.:)

You know I've been thinking about that the last few days. I will definitely bowhunt Sunday and I might try it on Monday but I doubt the deer will be moving much after that.
I have a really good stand set up that I did not use much last time and that's where I saw the big buck I'm looking for. It's a small property (40 acres) and I know the chances are slim but my best chances are on Sunday and Monday as I'll use the surprise attack.
This year is kinda weird for me. I usually have a couple down by now but I guess I need to try harder.

Do you have a doe with your bow yet??? If I were gonna be home you could come to my place and I could def. gurantee you a doe within bow range, but bucks are bucks! They are iffy! Unfortunately I wont be able to help, I am gonna be in Kansas!

Kaiser878,
The only doe I have so far was here in MD. When I spent that week in ohio (11-09 to 11-16) I only had one doe that came right under my stand but with a big old boy on her trail I let her go and got ready. Too bad the buck ended up taking a different trail when he was just out of my range and with him my chances went.:(
I hunted 4 stands on my property and I had a lot of small 4 and 6 points under my stand but no does....weird. I think the reason behind this was stand placement.
I really appreciate the offer but I wish I had more time. Right now I am planning on hunting my property in Noble from Sunday through Tuesday or Wednesday and then head down to Athens to meet some friends and hunt till Friday.
However I wouldn't mind a doe hunt later in the season. Plus I might learn a few things from you. What county do you do your hunting?
Kaiser878
11-26-2008, 08:46 PM
Tuscarawas county! Hard to learn anything from me! Im dumber than a box of rocks! ha

Im surely not gonig to sight see! haha Yup I am gonig duck and pheasant hunting. I am also scouting out a farm for deer hunting for next year. A doctor I work with owns a farm with his brother in Kansas. I have a all you can kill free pass! ha
I am going to spend most of my time in Cheyanne bottoms though. The main reason in gonig out there is to kill ducks and geese. Although, while Im there and the middle of the day is lingering, I mideaswell kill some roosters! Leaving friday morning at 3am. Should be a good trip!

I came back from Ohio with two deer. A doe and a buck. I got the doe on Sunday before gun season with my bow. She came at about 8am 10 yards to my right 10 minutes after a big doe busted me on the treestand. I hit her perfectly getting a lung and the top of the heart. She went 20 yards and crashed.
I also shot a nice 8pt on the last day of this trip. I posted a thread with the story. Too bad I shot him with my shotgun.

Hey guys i have not been out much lately, this is the busy time of year for me at work (retail) and with all the advertising for the boat shows i just have not had time to get out. I do have some late season hunts planned though, however you guys have managed to put it over the top without the old man this year. Great job guys i just wished i could have contributed more. It has been the roughest year in a long time for me :nono:
100K, OhioArcher, where ya at?
Sorry I've been busy between working and hunting and haven't had much free time for pc, and the work computer had been messed up until just a few days ago. I decided to miss our opening day gun season here in NC and bow hunted all of Thanksgiving week in Ohio. I actually have spend more time in Ohio than any other year and sad to say this was my worst year. Thanksgiving week I hunted hard and just didn't see a lot of deer, the last day of my hunt was actually the only day I saw a good buck and I screwed it up by walking right up on him at 40yards and he didn't give me time to do nothing. I wasn't really planning another trip but I run into an old friend of mine that I hadn't seen in a few years and he invited me on a hunt on some private land in Scioto County. Anyone know anything about Scioto? I will be leaving this week to try once again;) .
From looks of all the success here excluding me the team is kicking butt. Congrats to everyone, you all have killed some very nice deer. Glad to see your Dad got that deer Zack, but I was hoping he would get the other one...I was really wanting to see a close up of him;) , but if he can make it a just a little longer you will have something to really be excited about next year.
Hey Zack, I know from one of your earlier threads how you feel about trail cams but I'm just curious if the big double drop will change your mine come beginning of bow season next year? I also may have missed in one of the other threads, but how did your Kansas hunt go?
Oh yeah, just want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!!

Oh the trail cams deffinately made me realize they are a huge aid in killing a deer! My father killed one of the bucks I had been getting pictures of this past friday night. He was on a pretty set pattern and he went out when I told him too and he ended up killing one of them! I still will not hunt over one of the cams. I will put them out to monitor deer movement but I will not hunt the area I have the cams out in. I will let my dad hunt those areas! I enjoy reading the deer myself, thats part of the fun for me!
Kansas was a blast! We killed a bunch of birds! I went there with the hopes of shooting a speckled belly goose. I ended up shooting two very mature birds! I was very pleased with how the trip went. In 5 days of hunting 2 of us killed almost 40 birds! So I was happy about that! THe dogs did very well and we made it there and home safely! Cant complain about that!

I came back from Ohio last night. It was a great weekend except for the extremely cold weather. I spent the nights in my camper. I had a small propane heater but it was not close enough to maintain it above freezing. On Sunday night it was 2 degrees but the 25mph wind made it feel like -20. Yeah, that was the coldest night of my life.
Anyways, I went hunting on Saturday morning and evening and the weather was great. About 28 degrees and 5mph wind. Perfect conditions I though. However I did not see much movement neither a friend of mine that came with me.
Sunday I went out only in the evening because of the windy conditions. I thought it was too windy for deer to be moving much but I was proved wrong. As I was waking to my stand, deer started coming out of everywhere. I lost count on how many deer I saw, but at least 6 ran as I approached the stand.
One doe stopped at about 60 yards so I found a clear lane, aimed and shot. She jumped and ran uphill. I lost her as she went on the other side of the hill.
The shot looked good so I went to find her about 30 minutes later. I found little blood about 10 yards from where she jumped. The blood did not look good though. It was dark and just a little here and there. I followed it for about 300 yards before she jumped the fence into the neighbor's property. I went back to the car, drove to his house, got permission and walked down to pick up on the trail. Amazingly the blood kept going for about 200 yards more before I found her at the edge of a field just inside the treeline.
As I gutted her I realized the shot was just a few inches back and hit a little bit of a lung and the liver. I was glad I was able to find her after all that tracking.
Not the biggest doe but I gave it to a friend of mine who really needs the meat. He was very happy because his family can eat deer for Christmas.

I've got 4 deer total this season. 3 does and a buck and my freezer is good for the year. The next trip to my OH farm will be to do some work and make my first food plots. Should be a lot of fun and a learning experience.
I might try shoot some bunnies and if I have more time maybe a coyote. I've seen sign all over the place.
Looks like we are still on top of the contest.

No luck this past weekend. I hunted my favorite stand where I see deer all the time but not this weekend and I know why. As I was walking to it, I noticed fourwheeler tracks on the logging roads. I know they were fresh cause I can see the tracks on the snow as well as dirt on the sides on top of the snow.
What really pisses me off is that they went off the trails and right in the woods. Not only they trespassed my place but they abused it going off the roads. They actually rode it right next to my favorite stand site which is off the main trail. Not counting the property is posted heavily along the road.
Good thing I had taken off my cameras and tree stands after gun season. I spoke to my neighbor and he recalled seen a few trucks with fourwheeler trailers on Friday down the road but they were gone by then.
It seems that I always missed them by a day whether it's poaching or trespassing. I know there will be a day when I get there and somebody is gonna be in trouble.
I might have to put up a gate to keep these SOB off my F$%*^ land or some 2x4's with some nails along the roads for a little surprise.
On the other hand I had taken my GSP aka Olive with me in hopes of catching some bunnies. She is not a rabbit dog but I knew she would jump a few in her effort to find some birds. She was awesome as she jumped two rabbits in our walk through the woods. The first was out of sight even before I could put up a shot. The other one ran straight forward and I only got a shot when it was about 40 yards and missed. Funny thing is I thought they would run in circles as they usually do but no this time; they both ran straight forward to never be seen again.
Other than that it was a good weekend as I survived the freezing temps in my 15ft camper with nothing more than a propane heater (it's a joke) and my dog. Oh yeah I stuffed her inside my sleeping bag for some extra heat.
It's been a very good season for me with a lot to learn and apply next year. I wish I could have helped the team better on the score part but it is what it is.
I have enjoyed reading your stories, failures and successes and I hope we can meet one day to enjoy the passion that we all share.
