At work a buddy is trying to get a big buck contest started, but we are having trouble determining how to score deer for such a contest. We don't think it is real feasible to actually go by an actual measurement such as B/C, P/Y, Buckmasters due to trying to get heads measured by the same measurer and three shifts of contestants. I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas of how to measure for such a contest. I recommended that we go with total number of points, plus greatest spread, plus the hunters weight in pounds and height in inches, as I would be a shoe in with no more than a spike:D . Any ideas would be helpful.

you might use total tine length of all pts+beam length+outside width+circumference at the base, just a thought.

Uncle odie is right, just want to add my 2 cents if I may. You have to do all he says but there are 4 points you have to measure.....first around the base then a little behind your G2 then just past G2 and then just after G3. Best and truest measurement is on YOUTUBE theres an older guy measuring a womans buck around 130 class and he is the closest to getting true measurements. One more thing if its a real close tie be sure you are measuring dry (at least 30 days) if there is mney or a potential "book buck".

Man wouldnt weighin it be the greatest way lol Honestly JD thats a good idea. However then youd have guys tryin to weigh in half the head on a fork buck.

I think that the skull plate and horns is the best way to judge antler size in my opinion. I know that you can't get your typ and non-typ scores this way but you get the exact ammount of antler size this way. I killed a 3 beamed buck in 2000. I had it scored at the deer-turkey expo and it scored 152 2/8. Buckmasters scored it at 152 6/8. Now I thought buckmasters did not add inside spread to the total net so how was it scored so close by both groups? I think it grossed right around 170. Thats why after that I decided I will never have any buck officially scored or put in any record book ever. In my opinion inside spread should not be added anyways cause its just air space.http://http//www.ohiosportsman.com/photopost/data/500/medium/SSC_0145.JPGhttp://www.ohiosportsman.com/photopost/data/500/medium/SSC_0145.JPG

WOw impressive deer. Three mains huh thats great yeah I guess they would have a lil prob with measuring that LOL. I agree with you on the wasted space thing because you have 18 points measuring the same as a wide 8 but hey who are we to tell "the pros". The system I describe is a prelim type system if its measured over 140 then you may want to take it to an expo for sure.

What about total points multiplied by dressed weight = final score. That way you are hunting not only big racks, but big bodied deer too! It would be a very simple calculation and you would not have to worry about improper measurements on tines or bases, etc.
200lb 8 point would gross a 1600 score.
K.I.S.S. if you ask me!
I just always hear people bragging about racks, but rarely hear someone brag about the body weight. Yeah, I'd love a huge racked wall hanger, but I'm really out there to fill the freezer. The bigger the body, the fuller my freezer!

We ended up designating one guy to do the measuring while the hunters that thought theirs would contend with the biggest verified what the measurer came up with. Which this year only two guys killed bucks and I won the money. (Thanks bud45601 for your 20 dollar donation toward my mount :D) Bud was the only other person to get a buck, and they were close in size.
