Introducing the top 40 high school football players, ranked by Plain Dealer high school sports reporters Bob Fortuna, Carl Matzelle, Mike Peticca, Tim Rogers and Tim Warsinskey.

Of all the high school football players in Northeast Ohio, Garfield Heights defensive end/tight end Melvin Fellows has an edge over all of them.

1. Melvin Fellows, Garfield Heights, Sr., DE/TE, 6-5, 250: Ohio State recruit totaled 97 tackles, including 23 for loss, and seven sacks while being double- and triple-teamed.

2. Marcus Hall, Glenville, Sr., OT/DT, 6-5, 305: Three-year starter allowed no sacks and blocked at a 90 percent efficiency as a junior. Runs the 40 in 5.35 seconds.

3. Randy Greenwood, Lake Catholic, Sr., TB/DB, 6-0, 180: Broke his leg two days after committing to Akron and will miss at least five weeks. Had health issues early last year but still had 953 yards rushing/receiving, 13 TDs and four interceptions.

4. Chris Fields, Harvey, Sr., WR/TB/QB/FS, 6-1, 185: Ohio State recruit runs 40 in 4.39 seconds. Caught 51 passes for 850 yards with 10 TDs. Returned two kickoffs and a punt for TDs.

7. Devontae Payne, Cleveland South, Sr., QB/DE, 6-7, 240: One of Ohio's top QB prospects. Passed for 2,963 yards, 26 TDs and was intercepted six times over past two seasons. Look for limited defensive role.

8. Anthony Urbania, Benedictine, Sr., TB/S, 6-0, 200: Had 31 tackles as a junior, but is outstanding on the other side of the ball. Rushed for 2,555 yards and 28 TDs the past two seasons.

9. Andrew Holland, St. Ignatius, Sr., QB, 6-1, 195: Superb pocket passer who can also run. Does a good job directing Wildcats' sophisticated offense against a demanding schedule.

10. Patrick McShane, Walsh Jesuit, Sr., OT/DT, 6-5, 285: Chose Indiana over Purdue, Illinois and several MAC schools. Will probably move to guard or center in college.

23. Brandon Kish, Amherst, Sr., TB, 6-0, 190: Outstanding runner. Gained nearly 2,000 yards in 2006. Hamstring injury limited him to four games in 2007. Still gained nearly 700 yards.

27. John Taylor, North Olmsted, Sr., OT/DT, 6-5, 270: Besides his strength, has excellent speed for his size, which gives him versatility that intrigues recruiters.

29. Brian Winters, Hudson, Sr., DT, 6-4, 305: Big, strong and surprisingly fast. That combo has attracted an offer from Syracuse and interest from West Virginia and Ohio State.

30. Pat Hinkel, St. Ignatius, Sr., S, 6-2, 205: Stout run-stopper with a great instinct for where the football is going. Can impact a game as a remarkable special teams player.
