Caribou-
Im as troubled as you are, but what do they mean "Ban". They are here, and unless they plan on erradicating them they are gonna stay here. Seems like tryin to ban the emerald ash borer, huh? Or maybe monarch butterflies without greencards.

Also, is this in response to the threat that they pose against the whitetail and turkey population? There are two sides to most stories. Is this a legitimate ban? We both know of the damage they do, Is not being able to hunt them an acceptable alternative to being overrun by them? Just thinkin tangibly-Mike

What will the owners of the DD ranch do now?

Do enjoy hunting hogs? Yes, I do but I have never hunted them in Ohio because I have yet to find a huntable population of hogs and i'd like to keep it that way.

Can I call them also if I don't agree with game "preserves" importing non native animals to hunt, and then inadvertently releasing them into the wild to destroy habitat for Ohio’s native wildlife. IMO, if you want to hunt hogs, go to Texas.. We don't need more of those damn things in Ohio.. They WILL get out, and the WILL destroy habitat by the thousands of acres.... I hate it when the government needs to regulate anything. Especially hunting rights. But if the hunting public isn't going to do it, then what’s left for the DNR to do besides step in.. This isn't an issue of the DNR imposing on your hunting rights. It's the DNR trying to protect the outstanding wildlife habitat that we here in Ohio hold dearly. IMO the DNR is doing their job to stop the spread on invasive species, just like MO is doing with Asian Carp..

The word BAN.. ???
How do you ban something that is already here ?
You would have to hunt them to eliminate them from the area, but what will stop more from migrating in or getting loose from a farmer and starting to populate somewhere again ?

If they are as detrimental to whitetails and turkeyts and as destructive to crops as I have heard, I have no problem getting rid of them from our state.

I just dont see how you can really Ban them..

its not like they are a domestic pet animals that people are buying and keeping like a dog.

I mean.. I have heard of banning Pit bulls and other dogs that they feel are dangerous types, but those are controllable because they are domestic animals that are kept in yards and houses in neighbohoods that are seen every day by those that live in those neighborhoods and some of those people will report it.

But how do you control that with a wild animal ?

Have no season on them and let those that see them kill them when ever , how ever until their numbers are non-existant in our state.

I dont see much good about hogs in our state.

We have great wildlife management in OHio and we should trust in their opinion on those things.

I believe if they are a threat to whitetail and other important native species, ban them. Whether it be bounties on freeroaming hogs or totally eliminating them from the ranches, do it now. Be proactive with this instead of reactive.

I think there is some confusion with the original post. The ban that has been proposed is on having these animals in your possesion alive. The most likely scenario with that is the fenced hunting ranches. The net effect of this is that you will not be able to go pay a fenced operation in the state of OH to hunt these. If you come across any in the wild the regs and recommendation to shoot them on sight will not change. The state will continue to try to eradicate these animals that are in the wild currently and most likely got into the wild in the first place by escaping a preserve. The reason for the ban is so future escapee's don't undermind the states efforts at protecting our woods and fields to mantain the great outdoors experience most of us enjoy.

Another reason for this ban is because of the great risk these wild animals pose to the Swine industry. For those that don't know Michigan just recently found some preserve animals that were Psuedorabies positive. This is a disease that the commercial swine industry across the country has spent millions of dollars to eradicate over the last 25 years and has succeeded in doing so in domesticated swine. Since these "wild" pigs do not get vaccines among other reasons, they pose a great risk to the swine industry in our state and country. It is of outmost importance that we stop this potential threat ASAP.

The bottom line is this is not an attack directed against hunting rights at all. It is an attempt to stop a problem before it becomes a larger issue then it already is. I too would recommend you to call the phone numbers listed or drop an email but in SUPPORT of this ban.

While I'm no animal biologist but I have hunted in Texas. Let me assure everyone, there are plenty of deer and turkeys in Texas. I'm going to California in two weeks to do some coyote and hog eradication with my brother. If these animals are so terrible the greenies should come off some money for all the habitat we'll be saving.

How long does it take a hog to run down a row of freshly planted corn and pluck every planted kernel out of the ground?

I have been told by my buddy in TX about 5 sec per kernel, a steady walk is all it takes..

i do not want to see a large population of wild hogs in ohio, but i also think people go over board on their destructiveness. i think the biggest threat a hog would create in ohio is for farmers and their crops, i do not see them ever effecting the deer or turkey population though. i personally think wild hogs, i am talking truly wild russians not just ferals, are greatly misunderstood.

Everything I've read and been told is that most feral hogs are escapee's from local farms.

Ok guys just an update they have dropped this ban. The odnr has no way of telling where the hogs come from be it preserve or farmer.I work at one in southern ohio and we work every week on the fence and r hogs do not get out or it costs us money. The odnr would have to get a hog and test its dna. feral and domestic hogs have 1 less chromosome than wild boar.
If anyone has wild hog on there property or knows where there are some let me know I'll come take care of them.
