The land I hunt is pretty much forested, but there are some open areas that were cleared for some oil wells.

These areas are pretty much clay with small rocks. Plenty of sunlight and water. The topsoil has been scraped away, but I'd like to try to get some vegetation around there.

Is there anything that I can lay down that will grow?

 55 Pounds of bulk Chia Seed... Just spread the seed and watch it grow... Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia.... You can also make Chia-Stumps - Chia Oil wells and even Chia- hard pack and rocks....

Those are tough conditions to get anything to grow. Also there is a good chance brine contaminated the area around the well head. I'd start with a soil test, but expect it to be pretty bad with the top soil removed.

Now that's funny, I don't care who you are...But seriously, have a soil sample done, and you that will give you all the information you need to determine what you can plant. Good Luck!

I know that's a tough spot, there are some hard to kill weeds there.

No real brine contamination, just not real soil. The older wells sport some grass.

I know Crown Vetch would probably grow, but don't know if it has any nutritional value. I also worry about it spreading into the wooded areas - I have a bad enough time with multi-flora roses.

I knew there wasn't much I could do, but thought there may be a bottom of the barrel type plant.

Crown vetch likes sun, if you get it to grow you wouldn't need to worry about it spreading in to the woods. Hairy vetch might work also. Vetches are legumes, like clover and beans, nutrition value would be good. Legumes will also start improving the soil. I like annual rye + hairy vetch for a cover crop.

Thanks,

My experience with vetch has been trying to eradicate it from my landscaping and yard.
