Welcome to the 2008/2009 Ohio Sportsman Deer Hunting Contest. The rules and format are the same as last years contest. If you are at all interested in joining in and being a part of a team be sure to thoroughly read this entire post so you know how it’s going to work.
CONTEST FORMAT
The contest will be run according to Ohio deer seasons from September 27, 2008 until February 1, 2009 (including youth season). The picture of your deer must be submitted no later than midnight on February 1, 2009.
The 2008/2009 contest will be a mixed weapon format with a random draw for teams.
Basically how it will work is:
Each member which signs up for the contest chooses the ‘primary weapon’, either a firearm or bow, that they will be hunting with. If that member is successful throughout the course of the deer season with that weapon they can submit it for scoring. However, if that member is successful, but with the weapon they did not choose that deer will not count for scoring purposes. ie: Joe chooses bow for his primary weapon, but shoots a buck w/ his rifle on Nov. 15. Therefore Joe can not submit his deer for scoring. (If you choose to be a bow hunter and kill a deer in gun season with your bow you can still enter it as long as it was shot by bow and not gun! For gun hunters you can enter deer from any gun season.
The number of entries will determine the final number of people on a team and number of teams.
REGISTRATION
The sign up will begin on July 22, 2008 and close at 11:59PM Sunday August 24, 2008. At that time teams will be created at random and posted in a thread titled “2008/2009 Ohio Sportsman Deer Hunting Contest Teams”.
DIRECTIONS
This contest will include only legal wild Whitetail deer taken during the 2008/2009 Deer season in Ohio.
If you have a successful hunt, submit your deer for scoring by completing the following (if any steps are missed or incorrect your deer WILL NOT count!!!):
1- Take a picture w/ you and the entire deer. (Not just the head!) A 2008/2009 Ohio Deer Tag must also clearly be displayed in the picture. To prove what weapon was used 1 of 2 things must happen. Either the weapon used must be clearly displayed with you and your deer, or a close up picture of your FILLED tag with weapon used marked off must be provided.
2-Upload your deer to the OS.com 2008 Ohio Deer Contest photo gallery along with the following information:
A- Title the picture: Team#_Bow or Firearm_Type of deer_08
Examples: Team 16_Bow_doe_07 or Team 9_Gun_8pointbuck_08
B- In the body you MUST fill in the following fields:
Your team name and number
Sex of the deer
The number of tines that are longer than 1 inch (main beam counts) - (If 1 inch tine is questionable supply a photo with a measurement against the tine for verification.)
Date the deer was taken
The weapon you used to take the deer
3-Post your picture in the thread titled: 2008/2009 OS Deer Hunting Contest Photo Entry and supply the same mandatory information from #2 (above) below your picture.
4-(Optional) Post the picture of you and the deer somewhere in your team thread to let them know of your success.
SCORING:
- (Bow Hunters) Each bow hunter will be allowed to submit 1 antlered and 1 antlerless deer or 2 antlerless deer. Both must taken with their chosen weapon for scoring.
- (Gun Hunters) Each gun hunter will be allowed to submit 1 antlered and 1 antlerless deer or 2 antlerless deer for the contest. Both must be taken with their chosen weapon for scoring.
Antlerless (ANY deer with antlers of LESS than 3 inches in length)=5 points
An antlered deer will= 5 points + the number of tines one inch or longer.
Scoring will be kept in the Scoreboard thread and will be updated every few days as new posts arrive in the successful hunter thread.
Keep in mind that this contest is for fun and should never be taken too seriously. As we go deeper into this we surely will find discrepancies as well as unforeseen circumstances that may appear to hinder any one person or his/her team. While we will do our best to reasonably accommodate any governing abnormality that may arise we can't guarantee everyone's complete satisfaction. Please remember that each case will be judged individually and given the same consideration regardless of who is requesting or when they do so.
Please keep this thread for questions regarding the contest.
Sign up in the "2008 Ohiosportsman.com Deer Hunting Team Contest Sign Up" thread!

You got it..
1 Buck and 1 Doe

2 Does
If you pick bow it has to be with a bow to count...

I think it is foolish to penalize a bowhunter for killing a good deer in gun season, because sometimes it does happen, but I will play along.

Yo 45,
I am thinking you did a copy/paste. Under the heading Directions, you reference the 2007/2008 season. I think you'll want to edit that part. ;)
Im in this year guys! I look forward to having a lot of fun with it.

Yes it is..
ORC 1501:31- (http://codes.ohio.gov/oac/1501%3A31-15-11)3 It shall be unlawful for any person to possess more than one firearm, longbow or crossbow while hunting deer.

As long as that buddy with the camera also has a license and a deer tag to hunt and therefore carry a weapon. No law against swapping weapons with your buddy as long as all other laws are being obeyed is there? I don't have a problem with that scenario. I'm going to have to trust everyone's integrity to be honest about whether they killed their deer with a bow or a gun...as long as it's an ethical hunt and legal humane kill. If a person wants to misrepresent their kill, they are only hurting themselves...and usually will be found out. Let the truth set you free

Can't take all the credit...Ed did the setup last year and it went pretty well. I did the random draw and scoreboard (please see 2007 thread on the draw...doing it the same this year...which means including an alternate signup and draw for the procrastinators  ). It was a lot of fun. That's all the contest is about...fun, comradarie and sharing the hunt (oh yeah and bragging rights :) ) Also, it is modeled after the one on http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/ site :D
It does take some time, but I enjoy doing it (and I promised Ed I would step up this year ;) ). We have some good sportsmen and women here with a lot of knowledge and willing to share. That makes it worth it to me. I have met some folks in person from these sites. Haven't been disappointed yet. Would be honored to know more of you :coolgleamA:
ps. I heard a rumor about a concurrent team contest...something about OS site vs. MS site ... I have to wait to hear more from my sources  ...(but I think if you sign up for the OS team contest you're automatically on team OS in the site contest :shhh: ...don't tell anyone :D )

There are also discussions ongoing with MS, WIS and IN forums for an inter-site, interstate fun contest. At the very least we hope to be able to have OS vs MS. Rules and format would be similar as well as scoring. We hope to include everyone on OS that is participating in our home site contest on the OS team vs ???...stay tuned :D

With that, we haven't agreed how to operate the contest between sites. They obviously have greater numbers of hunters and deer, we on the average more quality racked bucks. We'll just have to see...

Forgot to ask, or totally skipped over it, but are the teams a mix of bow and gun, or are there teams which are strictly bow and teams that are strictly gun?

All entrants listed will have until September 1st at midnight to check in with their team on their designated team thread. At that time, those who have not checked in will be deemed to be not interested in participating. The same will be replaced randomly from the alternate list on September 2nd. At that time teams will be considered final and no substitutes or changes will be made.

Question I just thought of. Didn't see an answer sorry if it's a repeat. You are allowed 1 doe and 1 buck, or 2 does. What if you get 2 does then get your buck? Am I supposed to enter both does... then the buck and the points will change for rack points? Or just enter 1 doe , keep the photos of the 2nd till the end of the season in case I don't get a buck, then enter it?

I would say enter one doe. Keep pictures of second doe. If you don't shoot a buck then enter the second doe.

I'll tell you what...
I am really pleased with all the interest in the fun contest this year. I am impressed with all of the suggestions and positive comments.
I am impressed with all of you who are going to harvest the early doe...I think it's good stewardship of the resource and some good table fare :)
I hope the DNR continues to see improved archery season harvests.
I am impressed by the quality of bucks in Ohio. I get to see it because all of you who share pics and stories. I enjoy them.
I am impressed with your decorum in the forums. I'll tell you what...I read a LOT of posts on a lot of forums. I thank you all for keeping your post within forum rules. I seldom have to moderate in that regard and that's what makes it fun for me.
Thanks :D
