Can anyone enlighten me on the availability of public property here in Ohio for hunting for wild boar? I once overheard a conversation in 2002 about some place in Vinton county where wild pigs were abundant on public land and the area neighbors on private land considered them to be a nuisance. If anyone has any suggestions about hunting areas with nearby camping access that would be appreciated.

I don't know of any place to hunt wild boar in Vinton County. I have been going there for the last 6yrs. and have never heard of a place like this. That doesn't mean there isn't but I have never heard of any. If you find out that there is please let me know.

I've always heard stories of wild hogs too, but I still have never seen or heard of any actual proof. Occasionally one will escape from a penned hunt club, but I don't imagine they last too long.

Thanks, I'm going with an old neighbor of mine.

Another friend has three stands set up for us. He said the hogs have been tearing up the feeders so we should at least see a few.

I'm not to concerned if I get one or not. I just want to go out and have fun. :)

Going out and having fun is what it is all about. Chasing hogs would be a blast, I bet it can be an adrenaline rush!

When your on the ground then yes it can, but out of a tree stand it's just like shooting a deer.

Hogs can't see for crap and the young piggy's don't look up (they are the best eaters too). We may do a few small drives through some palmettos and see if we can sneak up on a few.

THAT is exciting!!!! Especially when they jump up and start running around you. :) Most of the time all you see are palmetto branches flying all over the place and the pig grunting....:)

A few years back I was gun hunting and sneaking along a thin palmetto patch. Suddenly I heard this loud crashing behind me. I turned around and there was a 200+ pregnant sow running right at me. When she saw me move she took off the other direction, but it still got my blood flowing...:)

Most of the time hogs aren't aggressive, but just like any wounded animal, if you corner them they'll fight back. Most people who think they are being charged really are just in the way of the hog as it tries to escape. Like I said their eyesight is really poor.

They do smell "REAL" good and I think their hearing isn't bad either.

I will have to try it sometime. I got a few buddies that are going on a hog hunt the beginning of Aug. but since I am going to Montana I don't want to part w/ that extra money. It sounds like it can get pretty exciting at times.

I'll be hunting up by the North Carolina boarder.

I was stationed at Fort Jackson for Basic Training in 1990 then went on to Fort Gordon in Georgia for my AIT. Even then I thought that would be a greast place to hunt. Hunting should have been the furthest thing from my mind but once a hunter always a hunter.

I know the feeling...

I was stationed in Souther California for almost ten years. I "assumed" that there wasn't any place to hunt near where I lived.

It wasn't until I got orders to Washington D.C. that I met a guy who had been stationed at the same base as I. Boy was I mad when I found out I could have been hunting mule deer not 30 minutes away.....

Ah, that sucks. Maybe someday you will get the chance to go back. Maybe for temporary duty or something.

Southern California is a nice place to visit, but not to live. To crowded and too liberal.

I wouldn't live in California anyway to fast paced and way to many people. Montana is more up my alley layed back and everyone is so nice it almost makes you sick. Plus, it's an outdoorsmans paradise.

there used to be hogs an they were wild mangy suckers an mean too.treed me an a buddy when bowhuntin deer in 1967.they were domestic hogs that were abandoned by a varmint...the hogs actually wallered under his house in the mud.anyway for awhile there was these hogs in low numbers in the tricounty area of athens ,hockin an winton.but i have heard of no locals seein or shootin any on deer drives when they usually were kilt yrs. ago.i think you will be extremely disappointed huntin for hogs on public areas

It s a myth. No one has ever proven that there are any wild boar in Ohio. Even escapees. You are wasting your time.

Hi,
I just found this site, I wanted to let you know that wild hogs are in West Central Ohio. We killed 9 in one day last year. Another guy got one during gun season. The old sow had several little ones with her and the boar got away. Nobody wants them around here, they tear up everything even got into a guys horses last fall. I guess the story is that several got away from an enclosed area 10 years ago and they are really spreading out.
Just wanted to let you know there are some around...
They where razor backs by the way, not domestic wild hogs.
just wanted to say hi to everyone too, looks like a real nice forum..

If they are there you had better kill every hog you see.

Eventually they will infest the area and really tear up the area.

I live in East LIberty and I have never heard of wild hogs running around these parts.

Hey Spitfire, not to far from me.
Well we had some here. Got the pics on my fridge. Have not seen any since the snow was on but before the snow we had them. I am surprised you did not hear about it as close to honda as you are. My brother works at MAP and he took pics in to work. I really dont want any around here. Would not be fun mushroom hunting and running into a sow with little ones

Thunderflight

The sow wouldn't care about you as long as you didn't harm her pigglets or corner her.

I have never heard of any. I did hear of the elk that got loose down around that way but not any razorbacks. I don't know if it was the same elk or not but I saw one just outside Middleburg about a year ago or so.
To bad we didn't have any Razorbacks around here that would be pretty fun trying to get them. There is so much property around here that you can't hunt though you would probably never see them.

You know I shot a bigfoot by accident in '86, thought it was an overgrown squirrell. Got him stuffed, wife dont care for it much though. Have it right beside the jackalope.
We are getting way to many people around here also that own a 2 acre lot and think they own the entire block, got yelled at too many times last year from people who dont even own anything that i hunted, and I had written permission. Bunch of BS any more.

Thunderflight
07-29-2003, 07:02 PM

i agree the 2 acre people tend to be a problem...and its sooooo easy for them to get to know their neibors an git hunting priviledges ...but no,they trespass.i run into this on a couple places i hunt...one of the reasons behind me writin "pink paradise".believe it or not but residental housing is buying off farms way out in the boonies like concord church near millfield...an the same goes for farms bein sold off in sm. 1-2 acre parcels on the boundries of the wayne,i might take up that one, though
