here is a link if anyone is interested. This seed company markets a variety of high sugar content rye grass mixes. Rye grass is pretty easy to grow, and grows about anywhere without much soil prep. Their sweet spot mix runs about $65 for 15lbs which is kind of pricey, but it does contain some other seeds. The people who have said they have used it have had great reviews on it. I am going to pick up a bag to try on some of the spots I have where nothing seems to grow since it is so heavy on the rye grass.

I checked out the web sight and that seems terribly expensive for the composition listed below. Clover will only cost for the best 4 something a pound , turnips 3 something a pound. Chicory is expensive but its only 5% of the mix. Someone correct me if Im wrong, but rye is or was atleast super cheap. How far will that 15 pounds go? I don't think it will go far.

It is very expensive for a 15lb bag. It covers 1/2 acre according to the bag. Rye grain is cheap but rye grass is more expensive. I can get rye grain for about $10 for a 50lb bag. Depending on what kind of rye grass I look at its about $25 and up for a 50lb bag. None of it is a sweet rye grass variety though. I wish I could find Durana and Patriot clovers for $4 a pound. The cheapest I can find is about $5.99 a pound. I did get a 25lb bag of Durana Clover for $89 from a co-op in Washington or Oregon that some guy posted on the QDMA site. The Patriot clover I have been buying is $149 per 25lb bag. I haven't heard anyone say anything negative about Durana or Patriot once it gets started. The durana is a little slow. Both compete real well with weeds. The reason why I posted the link is for anyone looking for a no-plow plot. When we had the roads cut we seeded them with rye grass for to slow run off. From that experience I know that Rye grass will grow on anything and fairly shade tolerant. Most of the no-plow mixes on the market contain a lot of rye grass, though I have never seen any that marketed the rye grass as sweet rye grass. I am going to try it this year and see what it does. I thought maybe the seed they have for cattle would be a little less expensive but the only place I can find it on the internet is asking $150 for a 50lb.

I have never planted rye, but a field near home was planted a year or so back late in the year with (if I remember correctly) rye and timothy, and that field got pounded by deer late in the year. It was a small field, maybe 2-3 acres, and it would have at least 20 deer in it every night without exception.

Got off the phone tonight with my buddy. He was hunting over the sweet spot plot he planted. Just under a 1/2 he said. He said its grown really well and the deer are hammer it. They aren't killing his biologic Maxim plot yet and seem to be only be moderately using the wheat and oat plot he put in. He sent me a video tonight on my cell phone of two really nice 8's sparing pretty aggressively in that sweet spot splot. He seems to think it and the Maxim are the two better plots he has, though his clover plot hasn't really taken off. I wish I could figure out how to forward the video to my email and I'd post hit hear. You can really hear those guys going at it. I can't wait to get up there Nov 6. I'll be there up through the 24th.
