I had this question asked to me the other day and really didn't know the right answer..........You have a perenennial food plot that was planted in the spring consisting of clovers, chicory etc. Is it a smart idea to mow the clovers in late August and top seed the plot with a fall cereal grain such as wheat to have some fall attractant? Basically this is like a cover crop, except the clover is all ready established and he's wanting to go in and broadcast WW before a rain to add fall forage. I didn't know if this was a good idea or not so I thought I would ask you guys on here.

I'm no expert, but I would personally prefer not to do that and just prepare another area for winter wheat or another grain. As far as for fall attraction, we had deer all over our chicory and clover into late November last fall. If you are looking to have the wheat as a late fall/winter food source, my personal preference would be to have it in another area, but I'd rather hear an expert opinion on this.

Iam not an expert by any means, but if you have a really good stand of clover and chicory, meaning there is not much loose or visibile dirt showing then I would leave it as it is, but mow when needed. If you have alot of bare spots or loose dirt in your plot then go ahead if you want. Alot of the blends bought now days consist of clover, chicory, brassicas, and alot of cereal grains like wheat, and oats. Biologics green patch plus is a popular one. If the wheat takes then great, otherwise your clover and chicory will still feed deer through the rut, because it will still be 72 degrees nov 9th. Wheat though is bigger seed and generally needs put down on a loose soil bed or lightly disked in, but don't disk the clover.

Ditto what Cream and Joe said, The deer are in my clover until Nov/Dec. I would put a seperate plot of BFO or WW out if you want them.

what i like to do sometimes is to do half a plot in clover and the other half with a mix of brassicas and clover, the brassicas will supress the clover until the spring, then when the rape and turnips are gone the clover takes over

We were shocked at the way the brassica mix we planted last fall turned out. It was Tecomate seed, and had a mix of brassicas and chicory. We couldn't see any chicory all fall, then this spring the stuff was everywhere! It wasn't a super thick bed of chicory like in our chicory plot, but the stuff came in well and the plants were HUGE!
