Sometimes, young adults just don't know when they have a great opportunity in front of their face, and if they just stay focused and don't get involved in stuff they shouldn't, you won't end up like Clarett!!!!;)
This Boy may be blowing it as well!!!!! I know he has been talked to and given some mentors to help....but he isn't listening.......
Ohio State football: DB Clifford in court this morning
Posted by Doug Lesmerises July 07, 2008 02:01AM
The football future of Ohio State defensive back Eugene Clifford must be in question after the freshman's latest brush with the law.
According to Hamilton County court records, the 20-year-old will be arraigned at 9 a.m. today on two misdemeanor assault charges after being arrested on Friday.
According to police reports cited by the Cincinnati Enquirer, Clifford is accused of punching two men in the face following a fight outside a bar in Cincinnati.
Clifford was previously cited for marijuana possession and paid a fine in March 2007 during his senior year at Colerain High School. At Ohio State, he was suspended for last season's national title game after what sources confirmed to The Plain Dealer was a positive drug test.
Eugene Clifford
He also sat out the Buckeyes' April jersey scrimmage, the most important day of spring practice, after an unspecified violation. In speaking then about the status of Clifford and Donald Washington and Jamario O'Neal, two other defensive backs facing potential discipline, OSU coach Jim Tressel said, "Like in anything else, when things aren't exactly as they should be sometimes you lose privileges. Sometimes you don't do what you're supposed to do and you lose your car keys. That's as simple as I can put it."
If that indicated some sort of probation, this arrest would seem to violate that.
Clifford, now 6-foot-2 and 191 pounds, was the highest-rated player in Ohio State's 2007 recruiting class, a high school All-American who was the only five-star player in that 15-player OSU class, according to Scout.com.
He hasn't yet approached that potential, playing in four career games on special teams. But he moved from cornerback to safety this spring and was making some progress, projected as OSU's No. 4 safety early in spring practice.
"It goes back to [Clifford] being a heck of an athlete," safeties coach Paul Haynes said in early April. "He's got great range and he's not afraid to hit. He's bringing something to the table for sure."
Ohio State officials were not available to comment on Clifford's status. But on the surface, it appears he may have to bring it at another SCHOOL!!!!!

I'll be shocked if he's not suspended indefinitely and then completely gone following the legal process. He's been a problem before ever arriving on campus. He was busted for pot between signing and finishing H.S.
Not that it should matter in handling punishing Cliff, but OSU is plenty deep at safety so I'm not worried about the play on the field. I don't like what he's done to OSU's image.

Kids at 16,17, and even at 18-20...still have a lot of growing up to do.....and Clifford when he screwed up at High School, should of given himself a wake up call....and it didn't. He continued the trend to disaster!!!
Today's High profile recruits are blowing opportunities when this happens, and it happens in every program...and yes this happened after we signed him, and yes, we are very fortunate to have a lot of talent and depth...but more importantly...this kid is blowing his chance......unfortunately...if he gets another chance, it will be at another school.......adios Clifford

Not puffing out my chest, but, UM had him in their pocket when he started to screw up his senior year. He actually avoided a couple other arrests for pot that year two. After the 2nd incident, UM said "No Thanks".
And this problem happens everywhere. Kevin Grady, a potential starter at RB for UM just got busted for DUI a few days ago. RichRod just announced that he is suspended indefinately. But this is his first offense, so I'm guessing he'll be back for the season opener. Thank God none of us are Georgia fans right now:yikes: I think they have had 7 different player arrests since the season ended.

It doesn't matter who it is......and Clifford if he wanted to go to UM bad enough...They would of found a way. He just choose OSU, and they pulled it to give to someone else when they realized they were out of the picture....For obvious reasons!!!! Every program has it...it's just a waste of talent, and the kids have no clue at that age what they are blowing!!!!!
Let's take Boone for example...St. Edward Grad.......good lineman, potental All American, and NFL Prospect....... never in trouble right????
Well...there is a dark side to his life too.....he had a drinking issue his 1st 2 years in college.
He boned up...called Tressel, and his own Mom......they had a meeting. They talked about the issue with alcohol...discussed his life and direction......and he made some tough decisions.....he is today because of him understandng where he was heading, and changing his life....for the better. He had family support and coach support...and help...and he is a Stud of player and has the potential to meet his goals. He grew up that day!!!
He either addressed it or would go by the wayside........he is a success story, and that my friends is the way to work through the challenges of life.
I hope he does well..he deserves it.
Grow up guys...some of you with great talent are missing the boat!!!!

Judge found Kevin Grady unable to acknowledge charges, set July 9 arraignment

Kevin GradyWYOMING -- A vehicle driven by University of Michigan running back and former East Grand Rapids High School football standout Kevin Grady was pulled over early Wednesday, and he was arrested for allegedly having a blood-alcohol level more than three times the legal limit.
Wyoming Police pulled over the 22-year-old as he drove south on Byron Center Avenue SW near 44th Street in a 2007 GMC Yukon Denali just before 2 a.m.
According to the ticket issued to Grady, he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.281. Michigan's legal definition of drunk is 0.08.
Grady was held in the Kent County Jail and was to be arraigned on a misdemeanor charge of operating while intoxicated in Wyoming District Court.
However, District Judge Pablo Cortes found Grady was "unable to render an intelligent or knowing acknowledgment of the charges" and ordered Grady to appear for arraignment July 9. Grady remains free on bond.
If found guilty, Grady could face a maximum of 93 days in jail, $500 in fines and have his car immobilized.

Kevin Grady was highly prized recruit for the University of Michigan, but was sidelined for the 2007 season due to a knee injury. He was expected to vie for the position of Michigan's prime receiver this fall. Neither Grady nor his father, Kevin Grady Sr., both currently of Ada Township, could be reached for comment.
The younger Grady has no other drinking infractions on his driving record.
He received a speeding ticket in 2002 for going 45 mph in a 35 mph zone in Kentwood; a ticket for failing to stop within a safe distance leading to a crash in Grand Rapids in 2003; and a citation for an improper turn in Ann Arbor last September. Grady did not pay the last ticket on time, leading to his license being suspended for a week in December.
Grady was a state record-setting running back for East Grand Rapids and a highly prized recruit for the University of Michigan, but was sidelined for the 2007 season due to a knee injury.
Grady was expected to vie for playing time in Michigan's backfield with the departure of Mike Hart, who set the school's rushing record before leaving school at the end of last season.
U-M football coach Rich Rodriguez would not speculate on how the charge could affect Grady's future with the Wolverines.
"I have been made aware of the incident involving Kevin by the Grady family," Rodriguez said in a statement. "Once we have an opportunity to meet with Kevin and review the details, we will handle the matter internally."

Are you serious? This is the first time Grady's ever been in trouble! All that other stuff is traffic court. I already had brought up Grady messing up, just in case you didn't read my post above yours. 1st time DUI isn't quite as bad as 3rd time pot. (Although I think the whole driving drunk thing is stupid and selfish). Dee, you don't know what you are talking about with regards to Cliffords recruitment. Oh, BTW, Pryor, Posey, Sweat, Thomas, and a few other 18 year old freshmen were drunker than hell at an on campus bar last night in C-Bus, so I'm glad to see they are starting out the right way down there:whistle: Although I'm fairly confident most of UM's are doing the same thing:)

And you know how clifford was recruited???? Not possible....only Clifford and a few "others" know along with the coaching staff's.......and a few others...but it isn't you!!!!
So what was Manningham doing his 4 years at UM...It wasn't smoking the peace pipe...I can bet you a few Ben Franklins on that.......
And when you were 18......you weren't in a bar sneaking a few cold ones........god help me...please........and not only was he last night...he had a few other excursions already....that you have no clue about.......lets just say recruiting never stops.
And this post was suppose to beat on the players that don't handle themsleves and blow their opportunities...but "someone" decided to puff up his chest and blow smoke up our arse about goodie-goodie UM is, and how "they" decided not to go after one of the TOP recruits in the country :gaga: and in all reality they are no different than anyone else.....except that OSU Wins games...and lots of them!!!!!!

Wow, Dee, I was just pointing out that UM was in the lead for Clifford until he started messing up. Then they kinda slowed on him a bit. It was kind of a mutual thing. You just acted silly Because I mentioned that Michigan coulda had him and passed on him and OSU took a chance that was actually worthwile. FWIW, I still wanted UM to take him. Like I said, I constantly follow the recruiting boards and it's pretty common knowlege how his recruitment played out. I know you guys don't like to think that Tressell loses out on kids or is a kids second choice, but it does happen. As far as Manningham, and Arrington also, I'm glad those clowns are gone. MM was a selfish prima donna that couildn't quit doing more stupid stuff than pot. As far as Pryor and the rest drinking, that was more a tongue in cheek thing. My buddies actually talked to him and said he's pretty quiet but very nice. I even said I'm guessing our frosh are doing the same thing. I think it's a rite of passage to do those things, lord knows I did plenty of time. As for my cheapshots at Tressell, I'll never stop taking those. LOL. He's a proven cheater that has been busted for paying players at YSU. How he and his brother didn't get busted for MoC, Pugic, and some of the others that had $2000 a wekk phony jobs, I still don't know. But Hell, look at what USC has been getting away with....Bush, Jarett, Williams.

You know UM paid weekly allowaces over the years...just sit down and accept it...that is life.....and creating stories about other programs will not help UM win any more games.

Worthington picked up for DUI. From all accounts it's his first offense so he should get off somewhat easy. I believe he blew a .10. I believe Kevin Grady at UM blew in upwards of a .28. Atleast we beat you in something this year already:nono:

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
OSU
Doug WorthingtonOhio State defensive tackle Doug Worthington might have put his starting status in jeopardy after being arrested last weekend and charged with driving under the influence.
Worthington, 20, was pulled over by Ohio State police at 3:13 a.m. Saturday, records show, near the intersection of Woody Hayes Drive and Cannon Drive -- in front of Ohio Stadium.
He was driving 41 mph in a 25-mph zone.
He was released shortly afterward and faces a DUI charge for having a blood-alcohol content between 0.08 and 0.17.
The charge is a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Worthington has no known previous offenses. Under OSU athletic department policy, a first drug- or alcohol-related offense results in increased testing and mandatory counseling. A second offense carries a one-game suspension.
Coach Jim Tressel did not immediately return a message.
Any loss of playing time for Worthington would be significant. A fourth-year junior, he played in all 13 games last season, starting 12, and recorded 24 tackles, a sack, an interception and a forced fumble.
By spring ball, he had added about 10 pounds to his 6-foot-7 frame and hoped to play at 285 or 290 this fall. The Buckeyes are looking for more production out of their defensive tackles this season.
Worthington's arrest marks the second for the Buckeyes in 22 days. Reserve defensive back Eugene Clifford recently was granted his release after he was arrested July 4 and charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault for allegedly punching two employees of a Cincinnati sport bar. He is expected to transfer to Tennessee State..

Wow, dude, that was like a month ago. I'll tell ya what. If you or Dee have any pull through that program, ask some people about the Mercedes that terell Pryor is driving. He got it from his "Legal Guardian" Ted Sarniak. Old Ted is a Jeanette Pennsylvania Business man who has strong ties to a few big Boosters at OSU. Just in the past year is when the Pryors signed over guardianship to Ted. Coincidence? Now, this is all clean and can't be tied to Tressell, much in the same way all the crap that happens at USC can never be tied to Pete Carroll. But you can call me what you want, but who's being naive here to think that Tressell and his boys Know nothing. It's the same crap that UM's basketball program got busted for a decade ago. Cars for everyone, credit cards, you name it. The only reason UM got busted is because the Feds got involved. That'll be the only way USC, or OSU will get busted.

Pryor's competitive nature makes him student of game
Sunday, July 27, 2008 3:40 AM
By Ken Gordon
CHICAGO -- Let's see what you're made of, rookie, Malcolm Jenkins thought the other day.
Ohio State players were holding an informal seven-on-seven passing drill, and Jenkins, a senior cornerback and world-class trash talker, decided to challenge hotshot freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor.
"I asked him if he was going to throw me a pick," Jenkins said, breaking into a grin. "And he threw the ball at me every single time. He's not somebody who's going to back down."
Jenkins was only the latest person to experience Pryor's competitiveness, to learn the most important reason why he might make an immediate impact on the Ohio State program in 2008.
The physical abilities are obvious. Pryor is the first player in Pennsylvania high school history to both throw and run for more than 4,000 career yards. He possesses a rare blend of size, speed and strength.
But when it comes to Pryor, it's not measurables that matter most. It's his attitude. A player who comes to college so highly touted could pose a severe challenge to team chemistry if he gives off a sense of arrogance or entitlement.
According to those around him, though, one of Pryor's best traits is that he knows how much he doesn't know. He is driven by a desire to improve, and he yearns to be challenged.
Weightlifting sessions in Hall's garage were intense. Already, in Pryor's six weeks in Columbus, Ohio State strength and conditioning coach Eric Lichter has taken note.
"He just seems to be one of those guys who enjoys physical work," Lichter said.
And then Lichter mentioned something that seems minor, but it illustrates that this kid is different.
"Whenever I talk to him, he looks you in the eye the entire time," Lichter said. "He's not distracted by text messaging and his cell phone. He keeps eye contact and he listens to everything you say. Not everybody does that."
Coach Jim Tressel learned a lot about Pryor's eagerness to learn and grow throughout the recruiting process.
After Tressel flew to a Jeannette game last fall and witnessed another Pryor tour de force, he said Pryor was more concerned with a play he missed than with those he made.
"He wanted to explain to me about that one pass he didn't hit: 'I saw the safety and I let it go just a little bit, I should've hit it,' " Tressel said. "He just loves to talk about becoming as good as he can become."
Even Pryor's choice of colleges revealed character. Many schools doubtless tantalized him with promises of immediate playing time.
"Everyone is like, 'Why not go to Michigan, he's going to run this offense; why not go to Oregon, he's going to run this offense,' " OSU receiver Brian Hartline said. "But it's not about that, it's about the future. So it's a great call for him (to come to OSU). Sit behind a veteran quarterback and learn some things. That speaks a lot about him."
Of course, the possibility exists that Pryor is so good that he will push Boeckman for the starting job this season. Boeckman said he welcomes the competition.
Jenkins, meanwhile, will keep prodding the rookie, testing him. As a team leader, it's his job.
"He can contribute," Jenkins said. "As long as you have the right attitude, it will all work out."
I see the Mercedes in White getting ready for his pro career!!!!

OUCH there Jeffmo.....
The numbers on Jim Tressel are just as straightforward as the man himself.
208 career wins; nine national title game appearances; four Big Ten titles; seven bowl appearances; and national championships in 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997 and 2002. Or 19 first team All-Americans at Ohio State; Heisman, Lombardi, O’Brien, Butkus, Nagurski, Groza, Rimington, Walter Camp, Ray Guy, Wuerffel and Draddy award winners; 44 first team all-Big Ten selections. Add a .820 winning percentage with the Buckeyes; 112 players earning Ohio State degrees during his tenure; and the most academic all-Big Ten selections in the conference each of his years as coach.
Pretty simple to see why Ohio State football has been successful with Jim Tressel at the helm.
Simple, too, to unravel the man in the sweater vest, who likes hot coffee, mowing the lawn and a good cheeseburger (no onions). While fans fantasize that pomp and circumstance surround one of the most accomplished figures in college football, Tressel is much more “what you see is what you get.”
He likes his music a little bit country, he enjoys working with the people around him, and he wants more than anything to help his players become the sort of people others will enjoy being around. He knows there are powerful forces influencing a young man as he sets out on his life’s course. Tressel believes one of the best influences is football.
He reminds his players daily that representing Ohio State is a privilege, an advantage that allows them to enhance the futures of themselves, their families and communities through education and enlightened concern. Meticulous in his habits but magnanimous in his generosity, Tressel emphasizes organization, planning and accountability as not just important in football, but as skills for life.
Using a game he loves as the means to grow people toward their potential, Tressel is a big-picture thinker, but is most comfortable with people one-on-one. Nobody signs more autographs or sends more notes of encouragement, one at a time for people who prize them, and no one is more genuinely puzzled at what the fuss is all about. But Jim Tressel’s works have brought great results to Ohio State football.
Now into his eighth season since taking the reins at OSU in 2001, Tressel has guided the Buckeyes to an overall record of 73-16, seven bowl appearances (including five BCS games), five 10-win seasons, four Big Ten titles and one national championship.
Tressel, who owns an overall record of 208-73-2 after 22 years as a head coach, was named as the Buckeyes’ 22nd head coach Jan. 18, 2001. His original five-year contract was extended through 2008 following the 2002 season; he was given a new contract at the end of the 2005 campaign that runs through 2012.
Tressel’s first Ohio State squad earned a 7-5 record with a dramatic road win over Michigan in the regular-season finale; he is 6-1 thus far against the Wolverines. In 2002, Ohio State came from out of nowhere to capture the Big Ten’s first consensus national title since 1968, posting a 13-0 regular-season record and then upsetting top-ranked Miami in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in a 31-24 double overtime thriller, becoming the first Division I-A school to record a 14-0 campaign.
During 2003, Tressel led the Buckeyes to an 11-2 record and their second consecutive BCS bowl appearance, where OSU defeated Kansas State in a return visit to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Despite the loss of 28 seniors and an NFL-record 14 players to the draft, the 2004 Buckeyes attained an 8-4 record that included wins over Michigan in the regular-season finale and Oklahoma State in the MasterCard Alamo Bowl. In 2005, the 10-2 Buckeyes tied for the
Big Ten title (7-1) and closed the season with back-to-back wins over Michigan and Notre Dame.
In 2006, Ohio State opened the season at No. 1 in the polls and held that ranking throughout the course of the regular season, the first team to go wire-to-wire at the top spot. Posting a 12-0 record during the regular season, Ohio State recorded wins over Texas and Michigan, both of which were ranked No. 2 at the time they played the Buckeyes, and played Florida in the BCS championship game in Arizona. In 2007, despite the loss of 12 players to pro ball, 11-2 Ohio State won another outright Big Ten title and carried the No. 1 ranking in the polls for five weeks, again advancing to the BCS title game, facing LSU in New Orleans.
Prior to coming to Ohio State, Tressel spent 15 seasons as head coach at Youngstown State, where he also served for a time as athletics director. His years there were ripe with success, the Penguins winning four national championships and qualifying for the Division I-AA playoffs a remarkable 10 times. During his stay at YSU, he compiled an overall record of 135-57-2 and was a four-time pick as the Division I-AA National Coach of the Year.
But making the jump to Ohio State was not a difficult decision for Tressel. His Buckeye roots run deep.
His father, the late Lee Tressel, who became a coaching legend at Baldwin Wallace College in northeastern Ohio, played briefly at Ohio State before his collegiate career was cut short by World War II. As a youngster, Jim grew up shagging balls for Cleveland Browns’ great Lou “The Toe” Groza who also attended Ohio State.
Born in Mentor, Ohio, where his father reeled off 34 consecutive wins as a high school coach before becoming the head coach at Massillon High School, Tressel spent most of his childhood in Berea, more often than not accompanying his father to football practices and games at Baldwin Wallace.
A 1971 Berea High graduate, Tressel played for his father at Baldwin Wallace, earning four letters at quarterback and winning all-conference honors as a senior in 1974. He graduated cum laude in 1975 with a degree in education.
Jim embarked upon his coaching career in the fall of 1975 as a graduate assistant at Akron, where he remained through the 1978 season, serving in a full-time capacity his last three seasons as coach of the quarterbacks, receivers and running backs. While at Akron, he earned his master’s degree.
Tressel spent the 1979 and ’80 seasons as quarterback and receiver coach at Miami of Ohio. He left the “Cradle of Coaches” in 1981 to become the quarterbacks coach at Syracuse, where he spent two seasons before returning to Ohio in 1983 as a member of Earle Bruce’s Ohio State staff.
In Tressel’s first year at Ohio State, the Buckeyes posted a 9-3 record and defeated Pitt in the Fiesta Bowl, OSU scoring the winning touchdown on a 39-yard pass from quarterback Mike Tomczak to split end Thad Jemison with 39 seconds left in the game.
In 1984 and ’85, Tressel was given the added responsibility of coaching the Buckeyes’ running backs. The ’84 team won the Big Ten and played in the Rose Bowl, and junior tailback Keith Byars finished second in the Heisman voting. In 1985, the Buckeyes defeated BYU in the Florida Citrus Bowl.
Regarded as one of the up-and-coming young assistant coaches in college football, Tressel was ready for the next step. But his transition to head coach at Youngstown State did not start auspiciously. Tressel’s first team lost the first four games of 1986 and finished with a 2-9 record. His first win as a college coach came 30-6 against Tennessee Tech in Youngstown Oct. 11.
But from that humble beginning, Tressel built a powerhouse.
In 1987, the second-year coach guided the Penguins to an 8-4 record and their first appearance in the Division I-AA playoffs. YSU won the Ohio Valley Conference title and Tressel was named OVC Coach of the Year. In 1989, the Penguins began an incredible run of six consecutive playoff appearances, winning three national championships and playing in four straight title games between 1991 and 1994.
Tressel’s first national crown came in 1991, when the Penguins defeated Marshall, 25-17, in the championship game. As a result of that victory, Jim and his dad became the only father-and-son combination in college football to win national titles (Lee Tressel won the 1978 Division III crown at Baldwin Wallace).
The Penguins lost a championship rematch with Marshall the following year, but won the rubber game with the Thundering Herd in 1993 for their second I-AA title in three years. YSU won its third crown in four years in 1994 with a 28-14 win over Boise State. Tressel’s fourth national title came in 1997, when the Penguins defeated McNeese State, 10-9, in the championship game. Youngstown State also played for the title in 1999, but lost to Georgia Southern in the finals. In 2000, YSU posted a 9-3 record and its 10th playoff appearance.
Five of Tressel’s teams won 12 or more games in a season, including his 1994 championship squad, which fashioned a 14-0-1 record. His 1991, ’92, ’93 and ’94 teams all played for the national championship, becoming just the second Division I-AA school to make four consecutive appearances in the title game.
Tressel recorded his 100th career victory against Indiana State (1997) and 200th at Washington (2007), just the 19th Division 1-A coach to reach that milestone. Even more remarkable, he is the third Tressel to reach 100 wins, joining his father (155 wins) and his older brother, Dick (currently OSU running backs coach), who coached at Hamline University (124 wins). As a family, Lee, Jim and Dick have won 487 games.
The charitable efforts of the Tressel family are equally productive. Jim and his wife Ellen (a Youngstown State graduate) are actively involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Athletes in Action, the OSU Thompson Libraries and The Ohio State University Medical Center, particularly the James Cancer Center. They are the parents of four accomplished young adults: Zak, Carlee, Eric and Whitney. The Tressels live in Upper Arlington.

I knew this whole time that if I showed you guys the reports on Tressell that it wouldn't matter. The thing is, the NCAA doesn't want to bust their 'Cash Cows". But this article just shows everything I've been saying that everybody else knows outside the state of Ohio. As far as Trolling for truckers? My coach isn't the one who wears a Sweatervest Dude! I'll admit St. Tress is a hell of a coach, but he's a cheater. Always has been. He's doing the same BS now at OSU that he was doing at YSU. You think he isn't smart enough to schedule YSU for other reasons than just to repay a debt? Defend him all you want. You ladies try to paint a bad picture of Rich Rod for changing jobs the same way millions of other Americans do. Nothing on him looks close as bad as that article I just posted for you. I'm still waiting on some good excuses there Jeffmo. You wanted it, but now a bunch of former players and convicted crooks with proven affiliations with St. Tress aren't good enough? The fact that it states Tressell introduced these people with the intentions of getting players favorable "jobs". The same stuff he did for MoC and Pugic Jr. C'mon, let's hear something other than "show me some proof". And Dee, Tressell isn't the only one with Charities. All of them have them.

In 2006, Ohio State opened the season at No. 1 in the polls and held that ranking throughout the course of the regular season, the first team to go wire-to-wire at the top spot.

Here's another beautifully written story of how St. Tress loves his players and is so honest and caring.
In the fall of 1999, nearly every program in the country wanted Sammy "The Bull" Maldonado. What coach worth his whistle wouldn't? He was a Parade All-America with 99 touchdowns and a then-state-record 7,581 rushing yards for Harrison (N.Y.) High. He had to sift through 3,000 recruiting letters-all of which still rest in a U.S. Postal Service bin in the family's basement-before narrowing his list to Ohio State and Syracuse
On a fall Friday morning, Buckeyes coach John Cooper sat down with Sammy's family in their living room. Rafael Maldonado, a street-tough native of Puerto Rico who'd gone from washing cars to owning a chunk of 55 New York City parking garages, didn't pull any punches. "You're getting a very good football player," he said. "But you're also getting a pain in the ass."
Cooper belly-laughed; he knew the type. Sammy, a B-student with 960 SATs, was a good kid, if a bit aloof. That didn't deter Cooper. A few weeks later, there was a press conference at Harrison High. Maldonado was going to become a Buckeye.
That fall, Maldonado lugged his first handoff seven yards off tackle for a touchdown against Penn State. He would rush 22 times for 50 yards as a freshman behind senior Derek Combs and junior Jonathan Wells. Buckeye fans chanted for The Bull whenever he saw the field, and even pestered his parents for autographs after games.
But after another loss to Michigan, Ohio State fired Cooper, and Jim Tressel-architect of four national titles at Division I-AA Youngstown State-took over. Within a year, Maldonado would be roadkill, unwanted by the team he played for and unable to play for anyone else.
Despite a solid spring and summer that got him up to No. 2 on the depth chart before that next season, Maldonado was on the sideline when August camp opened. He was asked only to participate in sprints at the end of practice, while Wells, now the starter, and freshman Lydell Ross, one of Tressel's first recruits, shared the running back duties. "I didn't know what I'd done wrong," Maldonado says. "I think Tressel wanted the guys he recruited, not the players who were already there."
Sammy's mother, Nereyda, came to campus in September and videotaped two weeks of her son standing with his arms crossed during all the drills. Then Rafael flew to Columbus for a face-to-face with the coaches. He says when he asked Tressel why his boy wasn't playing, the coach told him Sammy made too many mistakes in practice. Pressed again, Tressel insisted the kid sat because of blunders.
"You're a liar," Rafael shot back. "I've seen two weeks of tape, and Sammy hasn't even put on his helmet."
The Maldonados say that Tressel looked stunned when running backs coach Tim Spencer (now with the Chicago Bears) confirmed that Nereyda had attended practice, and they add that the head coach quickly shuffled them out of his office. Sammy barely spoke with the staff the rest of the season; he finished with 39 carries for 168 yards. "I was just some body," he says, "basically a walk-on." (Ohio State has declined to discuss anything about Maldonado.)
He was at a loss. A superstar talent from a privileged upbringing, Sammy wasn't used to not getting what he wanted. On a bleak February day in 2002, increasingly worried about a son who seemed defeated, Rafael Maldonado called Sammy's cell phone. Sammy had slipped into his own world, most days rarely leaving the couch in his off-campus apartment. He got up in time to watch Jerry Springer at 11, then played video games the rest of the day. Football was a past life. Sammy answered his phone but told his dad he couldn't talk because he was in class. "No you're not," Rafael said. "You're on the couch beside your roommates."
A minute later, Rafael was barging into the apartment. He shut off the PlayStation and chased the other guys out. Then he presented two options to his son: find a D1-AA program, where he could play right away, or transfer to Maryland, where Rafael could try to mine connections with coach Ralph Friedgen, a Harrison native. "I don't know," Sammy told his dad. "You decide."
Rafael asked Cooper, who'd become a family friend since his dismissal, where he should steer Sammy. "Your son is a Division I football player," Cooper said. "Period."
So the Maldonados asked Harrison's coach, Art Troilo Jr., to talk with Friedgen. "He's the best player I've ever had," Troilo told the Maryland coaches. "And a damn good kid." Friedgen wasn't sold. "I have enough headaches," he said to the Maldonados over the phone. "I don't need your son."
But the family and Troilo kept chipping away. Finally, Friedgen told Sammy he could come to College Park.
Then Maryland got a look at his transcript.
IN SIX academic quarters at Ohio State, Maldonado had earned a decent number of credits (his 57 were the equivalent of about 40 at a semester school). He compiled a 2.3 GPA and had never lost his eligibility. But his coursework included four credits for playing football, three for Tressel's Coaching Football class, 10 for remedial reading, 10 for remedial math and three for Issues Affecting Student Athletes. Six other credits wouldn't transfer because he earned D's in two classes. Maldonado couldn't understand how he had earned only 17 transferable credits in two years. Even today the number pinballs around his head. "What kind of degree can you get from Ohio State if none of your classes count at other colleges?" he asks.
Not much of one, according to The Drake Group, an NCAA watchdog. Members of the organization refer to schools like Ohio State as "football factories" that offer soft courses designed to keep players on the field. "The purpose isn't to educate and graduate," says Drake Group associate director David Ridpath. "They're eligibility mills."
Maldonado figured that Friedgen wouldn't even offer a spot once the coach got wind of his transcript. The player needed to crunch the equivalent of 43 semester credits into one year just to become eligible at Maryland. He underestimated Friedgen, but just barely.
When the Maldonados flew to College Park for their first meeting with the skeptical coach, he delivered an ultimatum the family now calls Friedgen's Ten Commandments, establishing the uphill path Sammy had to travel. "We'll take you on a conditional basis," he said. "You have to pay your own way, you will go to class, you will go to study halls and you will get good grades. Do it my way or get lost."
The coach told Sammy he had to get B's in six credits of summer coursework. If he was late, or missed one class or a study hall, there would be no scholarship. Assistant coach Dave Sollazzo, another Harrison native, repositioned his desk to overlook the steps outside Byrd Stadium. Every morning at 7, Maldonado climbed down the 50 steps from the street above, gave a tired wave, then wobbled over to study hall. Sammy got his B's-and his scholarship.
Friedgen was impressed. He had seen his share of transfers over the years, but none with such a barren transcript. "It wasn't his fault," the coach says. "They had him in a bunch of classes that he shouldn't have been in."
Maldonado says the curriculum was not his idea. "Over there, they just put you in classes," he says. "I let them take care of my schedule.
I wish I wouldn't have."
But even after Maldonado worked his soft body and softer academic record into shape, Friedgen still regarded him as little more than a favor. Relegating him to the scout team, the coach decided to make Sammy despise him, to keep The Bull on edge. He made sure Maldonado became well acquainted with Maryland's Dawn Patrol, in which every slip-up, on or off the field, was rewarded with a 6 a.m. exploration of Byrd's lower bowl. "Twenty-eight aisles, 28 steps each," Maldonado moans.
After one unfocused midseason practice, Friedgen called Sammy into his office. "You're not good enough to play here; go to UMass," he said, dropping his eyes to some paperwork on his desk. A seething Maldonado stomped to the doorway before spinning around. "I'm not a I-AA player," he spit out. Friedgen didn't look up. "Talk doesn't go far with me," he said. "Show me, don't tell me."
Maldonado ran hard the next day, and the day after that, and damn near every day since. "I still get mad about it," he says. "I love the guy, but I look at Coach Friedgen and I'm afraid."
That's how Friedgen wants it. Maldonado surged to third on the depth chart, but when he bombed his first round of exams, Friedgen reverted to his drill-sergeant pose, suspending him for two games in the middle of the 2003 season. In the three games after the benching, Maldonado made the most of his 13 carries, rushing for 91 yards. But on the final play of the first quarter against North Carolina, he took a pitch, cut inside and felt his left knee give. He had torn his ACL.
Sammy's parents, worried that their son's confidence would sink again, checked him into a hotel after the surgery and took turns fetching ice and pain-killers. After a few days, Friedgen showed up with his wife, Gloria. She offered home-baked brownies, Sammy's favorite, and some encouraging words. But her bad-cop husband figured this wasn't the time to stop riding The Bull. "I told him he was a baby and he should suck it up," Friedgen says.
Sammy stewed for the rest of the week. The next Monday, though, he hobbled to a morning study hall in the mid-November chill before heading to class and practice in the afternoon.
He kept up with his school work and hammered rehab every day. This past summer he dropped eight pounds-he's down to 227-and opened preseason camp second on the depth chart behind Josh Allen. In the season opener against Northern Illinois, Maldonado churned out 84 yards and scored Maryland's first touchdown of the year. He got his first 100-yard game a week later against Temple. After nine games, he leads the Terps with 486 rushing yards and five scores. Most impressive, he's on target to graduate in May.
Maldonado doesn't need to read the stat sheet to know how far he's come. Walking to the football offices earlier this fall, he heard a bellow from across the street. "Yo, Bull!" He looked over to see a student wave and raise a fist in the air. Sammy was stopped in his tracks. "That felt good," he says. "Showed me people know what I went through."
Friedgen called him into his office the week before the Terps faced No.7 West Virginia in October. "Because I've been ripping you for three years now, I figured I'd tell you how good you've been doing," the coach said. "I want you to be a captain this week." Maldonado could barely speak; after the way that Friedgen always treated him, praise seemed too good to be true. He mumbled a meek "thank you" and began to rise from his chair.
But Friedgen wasn't through. "You gotta promise me one thing," he continued. "I don't want to hear that some NFL agent came in after the season and fed you a line of BS about getting your degree later on. Get it done." Maldonado stalked out, motivated all over again to show his coach what he could do.
Friedgen didn't look up, but he did smile.

and????
to rely on the word of clarrett is insane.
now let me state how i feel about these kids that bend(if not break)the rules.be it taking money, cars, jobs,or getting into scrapes with the law,if they break the rules they should pay the consequences, period! it cheapens the efforts of those who follow the rules.
that said, not every rule infraction calls for the need to be removed from the team.but,i'd say the tressel has a very good record of making his players accountable for there actions.
clarrett brought with him his expectations of being treated special.he THOUGHT that because he was one of the best in the game that he was above the rules.i'd say that time has proven him wrong.
it really pissed me off to watch him,jim brown and all of the others try to work the system the way they did.all that happened was wasted talent, and that is really sad.
i'd rather see ohio state have a losing DECADE than have another kid like him taking the spotlight from those who are deserving of it.
just an addition.
as far as good jobs for players go what in the hell is the problem with these kids WORKING???
more need to.

Sammy Maldonado - Red I can personally tell you Sammy was NEVER going to be good enough to play for OSU at TB (and that is in the days when we didn't have graet TB play). I not only watched him practice, but I watched his father get in the coaches faces and continually be a distraction during practice. They tried to keep him on the sidelines, but he refused to listen. I missed only a couple practices that entire year - they were wide open to the public that year with no invitation needed. You could walk over and enter the WHAC and sit right next to the guys while they got loose.
Here's how I would sum up Sammy's days at TOSU - Sammy wasn't good enough to play amongst a lackluster group of backs. He did miss assignments during practice and never did anything special with the ball in his hands. Sammy had a bad attitude with school work as well FB. To boot, he had parents that were a distraction to the team/coaches.
If he couldn't get a crack at the depth chart at Maryland, he surely isn't playing for OSU.
His academics - that's another story. All I will say is no self study courses transfer, and of course remedial courses do not. Sammy was not up to par with the academics to go to college - hence the the remedial course work. If you check the transcript of a whole lot of guys playing D-1 FB you'll see all kinds of remedial course work.
And guys come on - we can air out a laundry list for any school that is worth a darn in college athletics. It's just one man's opinion here, but I don't think there is a perfectly clean program in the country. I do think the coaches for the most part try to do their best - it is usually outside influences screwing with these kids.

Uh, let's see. Ryan Mallett is a 6'6" giant QB who likes to throw the ball. The last time I checked, RR doesn't really use big immobile qb's to run his offense, whereas Petrino does. He almost transferred out of UM to R-Kansas before he even practiced once because he was homesick. And fata$$ Boren left because he couldn't handle all the running and cursing. Then he cries about Family Values. It's funny that every player there says they are way closer now than they have ever been. I'll have to look for one of the recent photo's, but Boren is huge now! I mean he looks like he has a pack of hotdogs laying across the back of his neck.:)

So we are just ignoring the glaring similarities between the crap Tressell pulled at YSU and what happened with Clarett? All the same thing. He damn well knew what was going on and had a hand in setting up these shady individuals with his players. Then he tries his lame response "Well, I , Uh, never seen that report". Or "I don't believe I'm familiar with that individual". And I do believe their is some of this that goes on everywhere where coaches try to keep everything clean. But that same old song and dance happened at 2 different places for Tressell. FnF, if you or Dee have any inside sources, ask them about Pryors hookup with the Mercedes and Ted Sarniak. Ask about Ted's association with all the Boosters. See if their faces can can lie along with their lips.

LMAO@ Jeffmo.......Simple answer there Red....other fans, like yourself have to find fault with their Rival team to make up for their own teams inability to compete and thus make themsleves feel better.
I always told my players.....look in the mirror before you talk negatively about who your playing against! Sometimes the person your talking to in that mirror, is the one that needs to improve themselves to be able to then look at the reflection of a winner.
Like I said earlier....It's getting OLD Red.........you may have to think about visiting the UM forum, because, misery likes company, and we have a lot of positives here with the BIG TEN CHAMPION BUCKEYES that we are really enjoying!!!!

You guys won't readily admit it, but the way you guys aimlessly attack Richrod tells me you guys are a little nervous that he could be better than what we have had. Makes you a little nervous that he could and probably will revolutionize the way Big 10 football is played.
wait a minute.the FACT is that rich the shredder is paying wvu all that money because he balked on his contract and we're AIMLESSLY ATTACKING him? i'd say that's damn good aim isn't it?
but hell, you're right, i'm so "nervous" about rich and his revolutionizing the big 10 that i offered to bet you $100 on the game for the next 10 years.
thanks for letting me off hook.that was awful nice of you!
the fans and the press are gonna run him out of idiot arbor faster than cooper was gone at osu.

LOL. Rich the shredder? That's pretty weak. I'll just keep posting all the stuff about Tressell setting up meetings for his players to recieve phony jobs, cars, and cash, and then lying about it. As soon as I can figure out a clever nickname for all those infractions rolled into one, I'll start using it.

Red, Red, Red........quote from the article which I have seen several times......"Ultimately, no NCAA violations were found in either of the above situations". Talk is cheap my friend....and coming from these sources...you can see why there was nothing found!!!!
Red......Let it go...acccept the fact Tressel pounds UM, day in and day out...his teams have outplayed UM, he has out recruited both Carr and Rich shredder Rod, and he never was sanctioned or penalized by the NCAA for violations or had to pay back 4 million, before he coached his 1st game for OSU.
Until RR can prove otherwise...Sweater Vest owns UM......The guy just does.
We have gone back and forth about what happens at schools...every school...move on...it's old news.
Get a team to compete in UM......you all need to stop crying and making up stories to make you all feel good.....just like pissing on yourself and getting that warm feeling on your legs.
and take some of this advice.....
"I always told my players.....look in the mirror before you talk negatively about who your playing against! Sometimes the person your talking to in that mirror, is the one that needs to improve themselves to be able to then look at the reflection of a winner.
Like I said earlier....It's getting OLD Red.........you may have to think about visiting the UM forum, because, misery likes company, and we have a lot of positives here and no misery.....with the BIG TEN CHAMPION BUCKEYES that we are really enjoying!!!! "

Good job Paterno....more athletes wasting their future.....
Paterno boots two Penn St. DTs off teamUpdated: July 30, 2008, 12:12 PM EST 137 comments add this RSS blog email print STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State defensive tackles Chris Baker and Phil Taylor, who were involved in off-field fights last year, have been kicked off the team by coach Joe Paterno.
Team spokesman Jeff Nelson said Wednesday no information was available on why they were dismissed.
Baker and Taylor were disciplined by the school and Paterno for the fights last year.
Baker was sentenced to two years' probation in Centre County court in May for his role in two separate fights. He was allowed to work out with the team.
Taylor was sentenced to one year of probation for his role in a campus fight. He was not scheduled to rejoin the Nittany Lions until Aug. 16.

Great find Jeff. And made up stories. The NCAA ain't gonna bust their cash cows. And I think I've made a comment or 2 on how good Tressell coaches. Still doesn't change the fact that he's a cheater. Oh, Dee, I hear ya about it being old. Almost sounds like it hurts you a little to see the truth. Dee, did you do any asking to your supposed "sources" about Ted Sarniak and Pryor's new Mercedes? LOL.

Red......nothing hurts my feelings....I've been around a lot longer, experienced much more amd dealt with a lot bigger issues then this. To you THIS is a big issue, in creating something in your mind.....I know you want to make yourself feel better considering UM 's inability to be competitive. Just look in the mirror....re-read the post above.
Like I said earlier....Your story telling is getting old......
I'm just amazed that people still like to create stories about others.....I usually only saw that with the younger players I coached.....but I guess some never grow up!

Uh, what's that Benny? That's not... oh. Oooooh.
Never mind.
Yes, it did take great restraint not to go with an alternate caption for the above pic along the lines of, "So that's my spread offense in a nutshell. Tell me about yours."

Dee, what exactly have I made up? You guys begged for me to show you something. So I found the report that is all true done by ESPN. So, when you guys post articles about whatever, I should consider them true? But when I post stuff from the same sources about how your coach has always been a cheater, it's all made up? Which way is it? The funniest part about all of it, is when I started showing the proof of what everybody knows, all you guys can muster up is :stop it, it's getting old". In all reality, what we are all doing on here doesn't matter one damn bit. If you think it matters to me, I actually laugh everytime you guys put something up or when I do something stupid. I'm just as passionate(probably more) about my team as you guys are about yours. And I'll waste the time to make stupid responses to your guys stupid responses. It's just a long summer between seasons (Football and Deer).

looks like ol rich may have contacted some players a bit too soon.
'Rodriguez also was asked about a story in Thursday's CharlestonDaily Mail, which reported that WVU officials were concerned Rodriguez contacted Michigan recruits before he resigned as Mountaineers coach. The paper said cellphone records it secured through the Freedom of Information Act showed Rodriguez called two Michigan recruits and possibly another from his WVU-issued phone in the hours after he told the Mountaineers players Dec. 16 he was leaving for Michigan. Rodriguez said Thursday he did not contact any Michigan recruits while he was still employed by WVU."

Hey Jeffmo, you notice anything in common with these sources? They're all from WV! They pretty much ran a BS filled smear campaign against him. LOL. has anybody heard what those mysterious documents that he shredded were? I'm probably guessing they were personal items of all his employees he didn't want anybody knowing. You see, after the FBI pieced them all back together, seems he was telling the truth. Hmm, imagine that concept Tressell. Keep trying, but nothing like the meat I brought about your coach's pattern of cheating at his past couple coaching jobs.
