I'm considering the purchase of a Savage/Stevens model 200 or a Remington model 770, in .308 caliber.
The only thing I'd do to the Stevens 200 is have a Sharp Shooter Supply trigger installed and top it off with some good glass. :)
I've not purchased Remington rifles or shotguns, due to quality control issues, in years past. I'm not familar with this model 770.
I'd like to hear from anyone with experience with this 770 models' trigger, accuracy and general reliability.
Thank you, Bowhunter57

I have not owned a savage or stevens...just preference to this point.
I own 2 rifles and 2 shotguns from Remington.
Why the 770?
None of them has ever given me an issue. One of the the shotguns is an 870 Wingmaster with a fully rifled barrel and 2x7 Leupold scope.....that I use strictly for deer hunting here in Ohio, and that gun is so dead on accurate...that it will shoot 2" groups at 100 yards consistently with my Federal sabot slugs.
I've lost count, but that Gun alone has killed in excess of 35 deer with a few of them taken over 100 yards...one of them an 8 point buck that was shot at (range finded distance) and marked off yardage of 151 yards, I missed him on the 1st shot(went under him)...the second one him him in the heart and he expired within 12 yards of the shot.....love the gun. Yes he stood there for the 2nd shot:biggrin: I just was off a few inches on the bullet drop of the slug on the 1st shot.
The rifles and other shotgun have had no issues. Son uses one of the 270's for Deer in Pa now. I have a 7mm STW as well that I use out west...nice shooting gun as well......the 1100 had a few jams when we were trap shooting, but once cleaned it worked nicely. I have a friend who has some issue on jamming rounds with his 1100, but that is all I have heard on issues with these.
I haven't bought too many recently since I have been buying Browning's and other models latelty...but the Remington's I have shoot well.
Put a nice Timney trigger on any one that you choose, find the right bullet and powder combination, and your all set with whatever you choose.
Good Luck.

Why the 770?
Deehntr56,
The model 770 is nearly identical to the Stevens model 200, in barrel length, synthetic stock and overall feel. There's a slight weight increase with the Remington, which is not an issue.
My "drawbacks" to the 770 is my lack of knowledge about the rifle. :irked: My concerns are with:
* Accuracy! I intend to reload for this rifle, but some rifles require gunsmithing to attain good accuracy.
* Trigger adjustment (if any) otherwise it will be replaced.
* Reliability is as far as: Failure to Feed, Failure to Eject, Failure to Fire, etc.
Pluses for the Stevens 200:
* Anything that will fit on a Savage will fit on a Stevens.
* Sharp Shooter Supply is 20 minutes from my house and they can install a custom trigger for $85.
* Savage has a reputation for out-of-the-box accuracy.
* The cost is slighty less.
Good hunting, Bowhunter57
I've owned two Remington rifles in my time. A .270 and a .243. Both BDL's. Good rifles. Sold em and now own six Savage's. The most accurate rifle right out of the box IMHO. Love em.

OK, with that said, I can see why you are relating it to the Savage/Stevens.
Since they make many models.
The Remington being a few ounces heavier I agree is not an issue. It actually may be better.
The 770 has the action and barrel of the Model 710, and the 710 is based off the action of the 700. Mine are 700's.
The 700's have been one of the top rilfes of all times, with them you have the Model 70's by Winchester, Model 52's and M94's, Kimbers, Marlin,Mauser's, Ruger, Holland and Holland and even the Savage 99 rates as one of them as well.
The main differences of this gun is the higher cheek plate and difference in stock, button riffling, and the 1 in 10" twist should be the same as the Stevens 200 series in the 308 caliber. Slight change to the magazine as well.
I am aware of the Savage/Stevens accuracy out of the box claim, and I have shot quite a few of them but they don't impress me with the quality of the gun. That has always deterred me from buying them in the past. It's just a preference issue more than anything else. But looks don't put down game!!!
Mine have done fine, and with any gun, some tinkering is always useful!!!!
The 200 series rifle has a floated bedded barrel as well, which helps with the accuracy.
Suggested Retail of the Remington is $450.00 and some change, and the Stevens is around $362.00 and some change...obviously cheaper as you shop around. These are list prices. I never pay them, we use our club FFL To get ours at cost.
It looks like you favor the Stevens...I always went with what I favored after research.
Good luck!!

i've never owned a remington rifle but have owned both the 870 wingmaster and an 1100.there's never been the 1st quality issue with either but, they are older shotguns.
i bought a savage 111 in 7mm rem mag for an elk hunt several years ago.i decided on it for a couple of reasons.the biggest is that i'm a lefty and the prices for left handed rifles are definately higher than right handed models.the savage was affordable for me compared to the other brands and the savings allowed me to purchase a leupold scope for it.
savage does have a good reputation for accuracy right out of the box and mine was no exception.i've been very happy with it's performance.the only down side to the low price is that it is not a very good looking rifle where the stock is concerned but that really doesn't matter to me.but, they have ALOT of different models that have better looking stocks(the safari grade is beautiful).
many of the new savages have the "accu-trigger" and although i've never shot one,all i've heard and read on them has been good.
here's the new savage .22 i bought this week.i use to use my 870 with a full choke barrel for squirrel hunting but gave it to a nephew for a college graduation present.since my eyes aren't what they use to be i decided to go with a scoped .22. the package deal had a 4x15 scope but i had them replace it with a 3-9x40.

Savage is going to be much more accurate out of the box. If you want to put $500 bucks extra into a Remington it will shoot similar. Get a Savage.
