I've used a .308 for coyotes and groundhogs with excellent success. You just have to watch your background a little more than you do with small bore rifles. Plus, I've used the lightest weight bullets that will accurately group out of my rifles, to get the maximum fragmentation on contact possible and run them as fast as accuracy will allow.

I use a 308 for chucks and a 6.5 x 284. I have had verry good results! I use Hornady 110g V-MAX over 49.5g of Reloader 7 ,Nosler brass and CCI br-2 primers. avg velocity is 3149fps. results are EXPLOSIVE! Ihave never had one crawl back in its hole, no matter how far the shot was ( 421yds longest so far) And usually they are splattered pretty good. Or have a verry big hole in them. I have some pics posted in the photo gallery so you can see. If you want to see the really messy pics send me an e-mail and Ill send you some. Good luck!

I have carried my WWII restored/sporterized Mauser 98LA chambered in .270WIN for coyotes, and killed several groundhogs with it, but never shot at any yotes while carrying it. The only reason I carried it for coyotes was during a time when I bought a new scope for my .22-250 and had not yet sighted it in. That .270 is a tack-driver, just ask the groundhogs. :mischeif:
I made my longest groundhog kill shot with that rifle, just over 240 yards. I don't get chances to take long shots that often, but blitzed that one.

What gr. bullet you using? I have often thought of using the lightest loads they make (I believe they are 95 or 115), or are you reloading you own?
I have used Gramps 38-55 once or twice in remerance of him. Its hard to find amo though.
50 cal flintlock has been a fun afternoon too. (throw a picnic table on the old snowmobile trailer and park at field. Its a nice way to cath up on things w/ an old friend)
I have enjoyed using my Marlin 44 mag carbine w a 16" barrel. Usially I use 44 spe. but a few have had the full impact of the Rem.mag. loads. Nothing over 100 yards though.

I started out using just what i had when i was introduced into varmint hunting the old 30/06 180 grain bullet OUCH!!!Then i started reloading the same cartriage with 110 grain v max better for longer range.
But since then i have went thru many diferent rifles and have feel in love with the 22-250 for my yote rifle,Until i can afford a new toy!!!!!!!!!!.

That's CDM (Coyote Disaster Master) in 25WSSM. Love using this on g'hogs. :coolgleamA:
Had a 35Rem Marlin336 that we'd put 357mag bullets in it & stalk g'hog to w/in 50yds. :mischeif:
