How many of you squirrel chasers leave the chasin up to the dogs. What type of dogs do you use. I used to use dogs with my Grandpa but lately have been using the ole just sit and wait strategy.

I've never heard of that before. Is that even legal?

As far as I know, using dogs in Ohio is fine. That is what I grew up doing. We used coon dogs and they worked great. Seemed to be able to tell we were hunting squirrels during the day and coon at night. Turn them lose and wait for the howl. Then we would track em down and find the squirrel in the tree. Spend lots of time with my grandpa that way. We would also float the river near his home in a boat and shoot em that way. Real stealthy like. Man i miss those days!

I've seen that on tv before pretty cool how a good squirrel dog will work them around the tree to you.

Pain in the butt to get the dog off tree and back on squirrlel scent but it does happen. Well worth it to have a dog out there though.

A few years back I was Grouse hunting in the Tar Hollow State Forest and there was a couple there squirrel hunting with their dogs. A pair of feist dogs, they said they were bred for squirrel hunting.

Have hnuted squirrels with a dog one time with HOYTME2 and it was a "blast". It was neat to walk the woods just watching that dog work. We had some success. It can be dangerous for the dog as I found out. We had one treed and got a couple of shots off at it, the squirrel fell to the ground and needless to say it was a fighter. The dog went after it to retrieve it and got a mouth full of teeth to her nose.

Overall it was a very good time, if you guys ever get the chance to try it, I would recommend it. Thanks again HOYTME2 !

Never tried it but.......know a guy from southern Oh. who uses Mountain Kerrs to hunt squirrels with and says it's a blast also:D
He also runs the dogs in field tials in Oh, WV, and Pa. He says it's a lot of fun to watch those dogs work and do their thing! according to him, Kerrs are very smart dogs and make good family pets to boot:) .......TF

I didn't want to be alone in tooting the horn of the Mountain Curs.
they are the present holders of the World Champion Sguirrel Dog.
This will be my first year using one on squirrels. This is the best breed of dog I ever came across. I think if maybe I could breed one to a Brittany I would have the all around hunting dog, but then again they are so smart maybe I could just train one to point & retrieve. I better stop before I get writer's cramp telling about the merits of the (Kemmer Stock) Mountian Cur. :o :D

I use Jack Rusells. Very fast and very good tree dogs. These little dogs make short work of any squirrels on the ground.

That sounds great! If anybody is interested in taking someone to hunt squirrel with a dog let me know. I have some PRIME squirrel woods, big red ones, I would love to tag along. I also have some VERY nice woods with greys in it.

I helped guide a PKC squirrel hunt here in Morrow County awhile ago. Had a blast. The cast I was with had a Walker and a couple of Cur dogs. The Walker won the cast(but it was knockin' the Cur's off the tree's).
I had so much fun I actually was ready to buy a Cur pup(then I realized the ass kicken I'd get when I got home!).
If I remember correctly we tree'd about 7 squirrels in one woods.

Just got back from looking at another KS Mountain Cur. He has some dogs that I would like to breed my Lucy dog to. He also has dogs for sale. If anyone is interested let me know & I'll get a hold of him for you. The guy is Amish. He has some dogs that are trained & has 2 litter of pups.

Are Mountain Curs and Fice (Feist?Phyce?..don't think I've ever seen it written)the same critter?I heard they were kinda scarce and a little expensive. My Cattle Dog seems real interested in squirrels, starts scanning the treetops when I fake the noise and tries to run up the tree if he actually sees one. He's just not good at givin' things up once he's got 'em...

There's a guy in Wopakenetta, Ohio who raises some great hunting JR's (Jack Russels). Most of his dogs were breed to hunt ground hogs and "go to ground" trails. We bought a dog from him about 8 years ago and he his hell on squirrels and rabbits. The guy's name is Ned and he operated Simms Run Kennels if you want a fun little hunting dog!

Problem with most JR's is they don't like other dogs, I also have an Elhew Pointer for bird hunting and the JR (all 15 pounds of him) tries to kill the pointer every chance he gets!

Squirrel dogs are big in Tennessee too, I know some guys who breed Fiest's (they are not the same as a Cur) there are several types, mountain, red and I don't know them all. These dogs are about the size of a gray fox and sorta favor a fox in shape, too. They are great little dogs for tree rats.

I've seen several border collies and austrailan shepards that were fantastic squirrel dogs, too. Not that common but they can hunt if trained.

I have a Welsh Corgi. One day I decided to take Colt out with me on a TREE RAT hunt. He's not a hunting dog, but on his own he started treeing the rat's. He'd run them up and around to me. So now it Colt and Me ,the hunters.

10Gauge: If I had an Elhew pointer & a 8oz shrew attacked him that shrew is history! Same goes for the Jack! I shot one of my dad's cattle dogs & almost strangled another(Dad said let'em go) because they jumped my/our beagle.

I came up w/a way to get rid cats that otta work w/the Jack, in case you're wanting a way to do it.
Take a 2x10 or 12 about 12' long. Box in the one end on all 3 sides approx' 1' high & 2' back w/ wood or stiff cardboard will work. In the far end of this box put your cat's err dog's favorite treat. Now a little more than half way back place a large piece of firewood or cement block under the plank as a fulcrum. Now the other end of plank should be next to a place where you can get 3', but no more than 4' of elevation. The tailgate of a truck works great provded it doesn't have a lift kit. Now w/ your trusty loaded 10ga in hand notify the cat or in your case the dog that there is a treat in the boxed end of the plank. Quickly retreat to your elevated spot & clabber atop while they scarf down the treat. W/shotgun ready, count to 3 & jump on the open end of the plank. As you are going down yell "PULL!" Suddenly a target will appear in the sky....SHOOT IT! ;) :D
Ya know, not all cats land on their feet.

Bye the way, I call this my "Catuppullt" :D

Our Airedale hunt tests require the dogs to work upland game, waterfowl and furred game. They always use a raccoon, but I have put Star on squirrels instead.

She will tree them and then watch them if they leap from tree to tree. I've shot a few that way, but we just don't have enough squirrels around here to really get her some work. She's also dynamite on pheasants.
