Interesting to say the least. But the question is What is it?
buckslayer did you land it?

It is a paddlefish which is a threatened species in ohio. I assisted in landing the fish, I was not the guy who hooked it. The guy in the pics caught it, I just grabbed it when he got it in. He caught it on the Ohio River today.

Saw one of those caught at Jackson Lake tail waters, though not that big.ODNR wouldn't let the guy reel it in,they were doing surveys and made him cut his line. This was 2 or 3 years ago.Pretty neat :D

That’s a neat fish... Often called a paddle fish or a spoonbill catfish. The oldest surviving fish that we know about. They can grow to be over 7 feet and 200 pounds, and can live to be 55 years old although the average is 30 yo There are tons of them in the Mississippi river. I have only ever caught one, and that was about the same size, I caught him on a trot line I had set in the river. They only eat plankton and strain the water kind of like a whale... So if you hook one in the mouth odds are he was straining and just ran into your bait. They are good eating have no bones only cartilage like a shark. Some states have prohibited the harvest like Louisiana but right next door in MS you can snag them below the lock and dams from Nov 1 – Apr 30. They may be "endangered" in Ohio, but down south along any lock and dam they are there by the thousands.
Funny story about the one I caught. My buddy and I was running our lines… and about half way through he says buddy we got something big coming up. He was ahead of me on the line he was walking the line and removing fish and I was re baiting. He said here it comes… Then about a 35 pound paddle fish came to the surface and was splashing around.. He let go of the line fell backwards in the boat with a girly type yell.. I was laughing so hard I let the line go. He had this look on his face and kept stuttering “WHAT THE F&%# was that.” I laughed so had my stomach hurt.. But since we dropped the line we had to go back to the beginning to pick it up again.. a 100 hook line with hooks 4 feet apart…. After 200 feet of walking the line, we got back to the fish, he wouldn’t grab it. He kept asking questions like, will it sting me? Is it poisonous? Can he hit me with the paddle? The fish was released to scare the crap out of someone else. Yep a good memory indeed.
