I think everyone should have to use the old flintlock with a ball and patch, open sights.
With all the new tech loaders out there, anyone can purchase one and be hunting within an hour.(no ffl on m.loaders)
209 primers,3 pyrodex pellets,240 gr sabots,Man thats a rifle.
This sounds like some other thread.

Maybe spears and clubs, then it could truly be called hunting! Whatever!!
I hope nobody is stirring up trouble around here. This is what happened at the bowsite. People started getting kicked off for ruffling feathers.

I would like the law to say no inlines during primitive weapons seasons. I think that caplocks should be allowed

I know what you mean Arrow 1. It kind of takes the "primative" out of primative weapons season but I'll live with it. I look at them being the crossbow of the muzzle loader season.

Now as for ruffleing some spring feathers........ keeyuk :)

I haven't muzzleloaded before , talking to friends they say to get the T/C Black Diamond 50 Cal. It has all what you need in a kit for starting out. What do all of you think?

I wish I could help. But I just picked mine up at Wal-mart for the primative season.:D ;) :p

Depends if you want to keep the "primative" in primative weapons. If you don't care you can't go wrong with ANY Thompon Center but my father-in-law bought an inexpensive .50 cal Cabela's gun and it shoots very nicely through 100 yards.

It was a joke:D

But I do have the low cost one from WalMart. Wife got it two years ago for me. I just use it for hunting. After my friend taught me the proper ways to maintain and load it we went to a range so I could test out what my bullets would do with what grains of powder. It was a real eye opener for sure. I am glad that I didnt invest a lot of $$$ into it since I only hunt with them and not do competitive shoots.

There are many BP rifles out there and you would have to pick out what is best for your tastes. Go low first IMHO and see how ell you like it.

Lol I was on a roof all day must have went to my head. Everyone makes fun of Walmart lol its my favorite place to shop... I will prolly just pick up a cheapo and see how I like it ... My main question which I guess I didnt point out very good is what kind as in flintlock, inline that kinda thing. :) It will just be for hunting and thats it.

If you want something that is a lot of fun and makes you get a little closer to the game get a gun that shoots a round ball like a Thompson Center Hawken. There are lots of roundball guns to choose from out there. I have one of these and I feel confident out to about 50 yards with mine.

On the other hand, If you are really not into a sporting challenge and feel you just have to kill something, get one of the many inlines that are available. they shoot a conical shaped modern bullet that you can kill a deer out to 125 yards or more with. Most guys put scopes on these which makes it even easier.

I am in it for the hard hunt.. I mainly ground hunt for that reason. The only thing I have a scope on is my one crossbow. I am comfortable with that at 40 yards within a 1 inch pattern. But I dont like to hunt with a scope on my guns though. Just my preferance though. :)

I have three muzzleloaders, an old 50 cal. CVA that isn't very dependable, misfires alot. I have a 54 cal. TC Hawkin that I hunt with usinig a patched round ball. I also have a Pendersolli 45 cal. flintlock hanging on my wall that I've never shot yet. I hope to hunt with it someday.

I have nothing against in-lines, but I hunt with the side locks because I'm interested in that period of history. I just like the idea of hunting like the early settlers in Ohio did. I think that the guys who lobbied for, and finally got the primitive weapons season had this in mind.

When I first started hunting the primitive weapons season, I rarely saw another hunter. Now it has almost turned into a mini gun season. But there are plenty of deer out there, so to each his own.

Zfish,

I have a few muzzleloaders, both in-line and the more traditional style. When you decide you're in the market for one you can shoot all of my guns and decide which style suits you the best before you purchase one.

Hey thanks Kim I really appriciate that. Right at the moment Im trying to get my hands on the so called Rare Remington 1100 410. I dont know why the 410s are so expensive compared to the 12 and 20.. I know they dont make them every year but geez. Im winning an auction right now at around 340 for one.. I havent seen one go for under 600 so Im sure Ill lose it :)

Hey Z, you first need to decide what you want out of your muzzle loader, You can get close to history with an old style flintlock or a cap lock that shoots round balls or lead bullets, these most of the time you need to get a power measure and measure each shot, they are heavy dirty and obnoxious little critters and at times very uncomfortable to shoot for lack of shoulder pads, they are what muzzle loading season was intended for. Sometimes they misfire, are hard to clean, and smell like skunks and smoke like diesels when you fire them. If you are out for the old fashion hunting experience then these are the way to go, they are fun and challenging to shoot, Thompson Center makes good ones there are many good ones that name just jumps off of my head. I would recommend a 50 cal. If you just want to hunt deer and basically extend the deer gun season, then you can go with the Newer inline muzzleloaders, they mostly but not always use shotgun primers for the ignition system and is close to 90% or better. the newer ones are chambered for special muzzleloading bullets that are alot closer to rifles than muzzleloaders, they have premeasured power pellets, that you just insert into the barrel, cleaner shooting, the bullets are pretty good, they mushroom well and fly straighter. In an inline I would recommend a 45 cal. you can shoot them at over 2200fps, they really are muzzleloading rifles. It is purely a matter of taste and what you want out of your rifle.

note .. this reply is just one mans opinion and is not intended to be an attack on anyones style of muzzleload hunting. There is no implication of old style muzzleloading being more sportsman like than anyother method of hunting, nor is there any implication that the new style rifle muzzleloaders are any better than any other form of hunting .. Hunting is a sport and how you choose to persue that sport is entirely up to the indivual. Gee you think I have read all the arguing over bow/crossbow hunting:D :D :D :D :D :D

No matter what style of muzzle loader you use, as in archery its more than likely you are going to get only ONE shot.
I use an inline mag , 3-50grn pyrodex pellets ,245grn Power belt bullets, and an inexpensive scope.I am more of a bowhunter, but for the few days that I carry a firearm, this is the one I choose. As with my bow, I know my comfort zone with this gun. Out to 125yrd, if the situation arises, I am 99% sure I will make a clean humane kill, with ONE shot
