Can you effectively kill weeds by disking up the ground and then spraying the plot with round up? Or should I spray then disk? This is what I had planned to do. Let me know if you think it will work.

My neighbor is helping me put in my plots since he has all the equipment. Next Saturday he is coming in and disking up the ground. I was going to then spray the plot with round up (my neighbor has been mowing this area for sometime now. It is just grass). I was going to wait a week and lime the plot with 150-200 pds (the plot is about 1/2 acre). I was going to then wait another week and plant and fertilize the plot. Would this work? Like I mentioned before, the plot sits in a bottom and it stays moist. I was going to plant alsike clover in 1/2 of it and brown top millet in the other half since they both thrive in wet soils.

Any suggestions?

Any suggestions?no not really...spray first wait two weeks and spray again...there are new seed that will germinate while you are spraying on round 1. How heavy is the existing cover? Its generally best to plow stuff under then disk.

Weed control in the spring can be an interesting task. You can spray, wait two weeks, and turn the soil over, but you will see weeds begin coming up again soon there after. You can turn the soil over and spray yet again but to me that is kind of a waste of money. I use an agressive clover that out competes weeds (not completely but it does work) and try to plant in the fall as much as I can. If I plant in the spring I also will plant something like buckwheat in with the clover to 1) stabilize the soil, 2) provide browse protection to the clover, and 3) to cut back on some of the weed issues as the clover gets established. It can then be mowed down in august and provide nutrients to the soil. Like I said the clover I use is aggressive and out competes weeds by rooting itself much like a strawberry does (leans over and re-roots itself). Millet will work too as far as a "cover" type crop. You want something fast growing.
