These stripers & wipers (hybrid stripers) are the most exciting fish when they are hitting topwater baits. Now, I have to temper that by saying my fishing is limited to SW OH and I've never caught a musky, steelie, salmon, etc. I might be swayed with some of them, but for now, the stripes are the funnest hit. When you see that bait sail thru the air several feet, then a second big crash & the rod jerks from your hands, drag running.........Man, I don't know if I can wait until spring !!
Catfish are fun because you never know how large it can be !!:p

Now all this talk about them stripers busting top water has got me all excited. My favorite when it comes to lg mouth is top water. They have stripers here in grand lake but I have never heard anyone targeting them. I wouldn't even know where to begine to try. Where would be the closest place to hit in the spring for them? I think kiser lake has the hybreds or one of them. Gonna try there this spring.

This was Oct 17th, 2002 we were in my buddy Dave's new Lund 18' Fisherman. Brand new, he had just picked itup on the 16th, second time in the water, my first time in it.
Anyway, Dave manages to slime up the new carpet with a nice flathead. I think it was 25#....hard to recall, as we were on a hot steak & caught them 20-25# everytime we went out, then they started getting bigger !!
http://www.fishingworks.com/Users/UserFolders/mrfishohio/PhotoImages/6th-flat-Dave.jpg
Here he is holding it.
http://www.fishingworks.com/Users/UserFolders/mrfishohio/PhotoImages/6th-flat-Dave-horizontal.jpg
Anyway...I was happy for him, but not happy for ME !! I wanted my big fish, we were only catching one big fish per day then. He was using 3 shad on a hook, I was using fresh skipjacks. I had lost a few good fish that week that felt big ( and I'm sure they were) Anyway, after it got dark, i got a nice one. It went 31# 4 oz and after his wife saw the pictures of some of our fish on the carpet, she made him put down a vinyl sheet !!
http://www.fishingworks.com/Users/UserFolders/mrfishohio/PhotoImages/10th%20-flat_Jim-floor.jpg
Notice the butterfly marking on it's back?? I'll remember that when I catch it again. Someone was telling me of catching the same flathead 3 times the same night once !
Hey dip......remember that spot we fished ?? Where I told you about Dave's fish ?? Look familiar ??

These are on the endangered species list in Ohio. They are quite common in the Ohio River from about the Greenup Dam & below. They are a little more aggressive than your flatheads, also seem to grow a little larger. There's several states that have bluecat records over 100# !! IN & KY (same fish) is 104# That's the record Dave & I are trying to break !;)
They have a distintive hump and pinkish fins. They are also know to school up.

http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/533/1221dsc00390.jpg
I wish they were bigger but you have to start somewhere. I'm going back to try to add to the total and have a nice family perch dinner. Although, at this pace, that dinner may be in June.:D
You folks from Ohio may be familiar with Metro Beach. It's the area where some egghead always crosses a pressure crack and floats to Cedar Pt. before the Coast Guard picks them up. I personally stay in the boat basins so this doesn't happen to me. Right now there isn't any ice on the big lake so no one can float off just yet. But it'll happen by March.
Keep up the nice pics.

Here's a nice fat hybrid striper. Well up around 8-10# I had it on , and I handed my rod to a senior citizen angler there. I told him to hang on, I have to get my camera. I ran up to the lot, & back down. He was in awe, shaking his head, he said " That fish is P.O.'d !!";) That was one of the last fish of last November
http://www.fishingworks.com/Users/UserFolders/mrfishohio/PhotoImages/big%20hybrid%204th%20fish.jpg
Here's an October fish that was 7#, you can see the difference in body muscle from the first fish.

Blues are much more aggressive than flatheads. Just check the records. Check with those guides who have a boat just like yours. That's why they are famous for lightning runs, they school & then grab a bait & run to get it away from their competition. Email some guides.

Don't take my word for it, I just hope your mind's not made up before the facts? How many 100# + flats & how many 100# blues? Here, I'll make it easy....just click this link. Count the 100# fish for yourself.

This one bit on 9-8-02 typical fish at that time for us. Any fish is a good fish, like Ray says, best way to keep in contact with a fish is to drop them a line !! Here's "my line"....
A good fish is better when it's on my line ! ;)

We do too( all the catfish, anyway). We'll have to see if we can release some bigguns together this year in the river. Maybe we should hook up and do a road trip to where the record blue was caught, split the expenses 3 or 4 ways, take 2 boats. I sure hope it doesn't do like last year & run high the whole spring. Even the lakes here were way above normal pool.
Here's some saugeyes that made the table !!
http://www.fishingworks.com/Users/UserFolders/mrfishohio/PhotoImages/Saugeyes%20at%20home.jpg
I've had one over 10 from SC & 2-10s & 1-11 from Florida.
My largest Ohio L-Bass was caught out of Resthaven Big Dike & weighed 6 lbs 8 oz on a Zeb scale & was C & R-ed out of a Belly Boat in 1974.
My 2nd largest L-Bass 6 lb 4 oz, 23 1/4" below from Ohio was caught in the Bear Wallow area & weighed at Acheson's Resort, Indian Lake on April 4th 1972 & was the largest weighed-in there for that year.
