My son and I made our weekly trip to southern Ohio during turkey season and planned a bit of hunting for ourselves before we guided in a Wheelin' Sportsman's Hunt in Caldwell.
Thursday morning brought tight lipped birds so alto of runnin and gunnin. Great fun, but no harvest.
Friday morning we changed our tactics and split up.....gobbling started at 5:30 and kept going until about 0800. I called a nice tom off the roost and up a high wall to me. Once he rounded the top of the hill and saw my decoys he proceeded to run straight to them. He stopped short and strutted in a circle around them and then proceeded to beat the livin H**L out of my jake decoy. The decoy and the 10" bearded gobbler both were harvested that morning.
Saturday was a great day with my hunter I was guiding but no bird taken.
Sunday morning my son did not go out with my hunter and my self; he chose to guide a friend of his who had never taken a bird. He called in multiple birds and the only on they could get was a jake....so successful first bird guided by my son.
My hunter and I went out and (as he has never hunted turkeys and never seen a live gobbler) I was able to call in a monster to 60 yards and we got a great show before the bird decided to not come all the way in....He felt it was a success and I agree. The first time he had a bird in and it was close enough to feel the gobble!!
I'll post pics when I have them.
