OUTDOORS
Hunter favors traditional bow over compound
Thursday, July 24, 2003
By Dave Golowenski FOR THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Though he has become a traditional hunter, Jim Suttinger doesn’t always sound like a typical hunter.
"One of these days I’d like to be able to take my bow and reach out and touch a deer with it," he said. "That’d mean as much to me as actually taking it."
Such a spoken sentiment shouldn’t be taken as a sign that Suttinger is burdened by ambivalence toward the life-anddeath nature of his sport. As primarily an urban-zone hunter in southern Delaware County, Suttinger, 38, takes as many as three or four deer each season for the family larder.
Instead, consider such a daydream as testimony to how much more stringent he believes are the demands on a hunter using a recurve or longbow instead of a modern compound bow.
"You have to know your limit," said Suttinger, a Sunburyarea resident who picked up the traditional habit several years ago as he was falling off the compound wagon. "Most (traditional) guys I know will shoot 20 yards at the max. Most shots, though, are 10, 12, 15 yards."
That’s practically hand-tohoof combat compared with the 30-, 40-yard and longer shooting distances some compound and many crossbow hunters consider to be within optimum range.
In order to compensate for the fact that traditional bows generally have less length and accuracy than modern technoenhanced equipment, hunters who use them must put a premium on stealth by getting as close as possible to their quarry, Suttinger said.
"It’s changed my methods. I seldom will sit in a tree. I hunt on the ground 90 percent of the time," he said. "I also prefer when the wind is blowing 30 mph and it’s raining. That’s a time when most other guys won’t go hunting."
While wind and rain can drown out a hunter’s noise and dispel problem scent that might alert a foraging or targeted deer, the traditional bow itself helps the hunter by operating silently.
After dropping a doe among a group of three from about 15 feet last season, the twangless release of Suttinger’s arrow failed to create even a tail twitch from the remaining pair.
"I ended up almost having to shoo them away," he said.
However, that’s not usually the case when it comes to bowhunters, who tend to be attracted by modern equipment. Although Suttinger represents Chaparral Archery, an Arizona maker of moderately priced, at $350 to $400, traditional bows, he’s making no claims about visions of altering any bowhunting landscape but his own.
Yet while he recognizes not every hunter seeks a higher degree of difficulty, the reminders come not infrequently that a few doughty souls always are game.
"A guy I sold a bow to (Saturday) said, ‘I would like a challenge’ " said Suttinger, who was more than happy to sell him one.
And not an impossible challenge, mind you, or what would be the point? As he plans to demonstrate Saturday afternoon during a seminar to be held at Hunters Headquarters near Sunbury, learning to shoot a traditional bow is a matter of being fitted with an instrument that matches the user’s strength, heeding a few simple instructions and practicing what has been preached.
Suttinger would like to see a bow-buying convert or two step toward the railing Saturday from the flock he hopes to bring toward the traditional light.
"The people I’m focusing on now are the ones who use compunds and crossbows," he said. "They’re just like me. At least the way I used to be."

If you all really want hogs I could start smuggling them up from South Carolina. Be careful what you wish for. The dang hogs might just take over your hunting area's and the deer will move off.

There where quite a few people there checking out the bows too.
What also surprised me is the amount of traditional archers in Ohio. The numbers are slowly growing.

Thunderflight my son.....
You have one more task to complete to make the transition to the Dark Side. You know what you must do......
:D
Clinic went well. We closed the place shooting with a couple guys who are compounders. Sold a bow to a compounder who shot one of these bows a couple weeks ago and said that is all he has been thinking about since then. When the Traditional bug bites you gotta scratch.
I ended up trading my last rifle for a brand new Assenheimer recurve. Keepin my scatter gun and thats all I got beside bows now.
Sure would like to do this at another shop somewhere. If anyone knows of a shop anywhere in Ohio who would like to give traditional a shot and have a clinic let me know. That was a blast.

i think i would trade my scoped inline muzz/gear for a new assenhiemer or very good con. used one at 55#/28" 60"

I traded a 45 cal. Knight Disc with extended fluted barrell and Bushnell 3-9 power scope. had exactly 11 rounds fired out of it. The Assenheimer is a brand new 2003 60" 53@28 Hunter (Supreme ?) . I proly took a little hit as far as money goes but I have always wanted an Assenheimer. Best recurves I have ever shot. Almost too pretty to shoot. Looks like gray actionwood with cocobolo and cocobolo stained bamboo limbs. Awesome looking bow. I am happy with the trade.

The next time you go to your stand Thunderflight, and your rest has moved or your site pins are broke will be the last time you carry a compound. Its inevitable. Its growing inside you like an alien and there is nothing you can do about it:D .
I remember telling Jamie Miller on the bowsite when I bought my recurve and started playing around with it that I would never sell my Hoyt compound. She's been long gone.
Its just a matter of time.
BTW Bamboo Viper,
The limbs have an actionwood core with bamboo. Got to looking close. I'll try to get a pic on.

Jim,
I stopped in at "Hunter's Headquarters" on Friday afternoon and dropped off 20 shoot flyers for OSTA. Did you see them?
I had a problem with the guy behind the archery counter. I think his name was Steve? I'd like to talk to you about it... Offline.
I couldn't make it on Saturday. Was moving a friend's father into an assisted living facility. Took a lot longer than I thought.
