What happened to all the pheasants in Ohio?
When I was in high school we used to jump them all the time.

Back in 80's when you where in school there were some. Now there GONE except for state and private stocked birds.
IMO wild grouse and pheasant are extinct in Ohio.
To bird hunt anymore you need to go to Stocked preserve in Ohio. Its sad but true.

I remember as a kid growing up on the late 50's and 60's they were around then, me and my dad used to travel all over the state hunting them. I think they ought to try to re-introduce them back into the wild if possible, I know we have lost some of the habitat for them and the winters are harsh in most places here. I think that harsh winters is one of the reasons they kinda died out here in Ohio, it's happened to the quail and grouse also but not as bad as to the pheasant population.

Dude, I'm only 35......:D
Man I just can't believe that pheasants are gone. Is there still a season to hunt them on private land?
Grouse are gone too? I remember going to Ohio Power and hunting them too.

Theres a few places you can still hunt wild pheasant but basically they are gone. As for grouse theres still plenty around just fewer so more walking to get your limit, and don't forget about quail, still wild quail in Ohio. I seen plenty of grouse hunting this yr and even hit some. You just can't go out in the woods and expect to see alot of grouse. You need to travel to Southeast Ohio to get into good numbers. Ohio Power/AEP still has plenty of birds and its all pulbic, something like 50,000 acres to hunt, and its in the hills(which is my backyard) in southeast Ohio. I grew up near Cambridge and would see 10-20 grouse while deer hunting in one day but not anymore. I seen 5 one day and that was the best. My old neighbor was a state highway patrolman and would shoot at least 100 grouse per season and he did this for 10 yrs straight. I'll be making some trips back home this season even though I just sold my house and farmland in Cambridge. I still have all the farmers land to hunt on. Anyone interested check out Salt Fork State park, huge hills, lots of sweat but there are birds there.
I just bought a Beretta Ultralight that weighs under 6lbs and makes it alot easier to going up and down those hills.

Where are you guys hunting, public property? There are phesants all over up here and a good bunch of grouse where we deer gun hunt. It was pretty neat last year for muzzeloader season. I sat on a log and watched the grouse walk by. They look too funny when they walk. the one was acting like a gobbler. He was fanning out his tail feathers, but he was also puffing up the feathers around his neck. It was neat.

IF you are thinking about hunting South Dakota for pheasants you better take every thing you need for out there less you want to pay big bucks for it.
Why I am telling you this is pheasant hunting is a bigger thing than prairie dog hunting, you will pay two time the price for a box of shotgun shells out there plus food will be higher.
I just got back from out in South Dakota this week from a prairie dog hunt and the rancher told us they can't want for bird hunters to start showing up.
The cost for me to prairie dog hunt for just about 3 weeks was $300 bucks and that was also the cost for the trip out and back to ohio.
The cost in ammo I shot was some where around $1500 bucks and I reloaded it all before I took off for SD.
I am thinking about going again this fall for a week this time to shot more PD's.
I hope you can do the trip out there its really nice and you can find rancher all over to let you hunt.
Good luck on your trip !

We have a few Pheasant around here and it seems you see more and more all the time.
There might not be as many as there used to be in the "olden days" but they are still here.

I seen a pheasant today along the side of the road on my way fishing and I seen another last week so I hope that means we'll be seeing a few more this season around here because they have been few and far between.

Man I'd like to get into some wild birds! I've seen three wild pheasants in the past 5 years and won't hunt those areas because they're so few and far between.

Catdaddy,
I may have to hold you to that offer! the only thing that may hold me up is my fall work schedule. Have to wait and see. I may be limited to hunting weekday mornings this year.

So is anyone going to SD to hunt pheasants this yr. I think I'm making a trip but depends of timing. I have a new baby due and get 6 weeks paternity leave, State job, and was planning on heading out at the end of the leave. Just depends how everything goes.

I am not going out to pheasants hunt but I will be going out to SD again here before long to do a week or two prairie dog shooting again.
I can tell you this there are pheasants all over out there.
I am going back out to try and get in the 1500yd downrange club if the weather holds out plus try and take out as many PD's as I can for the rancher.
So good luck on your new baby and also on your pheasants hunt.

Where do you hunt at??? Private land??? Do you pay to hunt???
Seems everyones sayin that to get on private land you need to pay unless you take alot of time to knock on alot of doors. At least for pheasant hunting, prob not for prairie dog.
Flyin
We hunt on Private land and its free but I was told by the rancher just about everyone ask for money when it comes to you bird hunters.
Thats big bucks out there I was told.
We hunt prairie dogs around a town called White River.
