Well, I've been looking at purchasing a pistol for home protection/target shooting, and I think I've decided on this one:

Does anyone have any experience with this pistol, or any suggestions on another pistol of the same caliber? I'm pretty much set on purchasing a .45
Thanks guys, Greg

gf319804,
Whatever you decide, don't cut corners on a quality semi-auto. You don't want ftf (failure to feed), fte (failure to eject), etc., when your life's on the line. :tsk:
There's nothing wrong with Springfield, Kimber, S&W, Ruger, Sig Sauer or H&K....to name a few of the top brands and not spending a young fortune. Rock River Arms, Wilson Combat and Les Baer are excellent handguns, BUT you're going to pay a premium for them. :coco: $800+
If at all possible, try to shoot several handguns, before purchasing one. It can and often does make a difference in what you'll purchase. :) I've shot the Springfield Armory XD series and absolutely love them! :bouncy: They have less felt recoil, due to the configuration of where the barrel's located in your hand.
Good luck with your choices!

I think you will be very happy. I was unhappy with my S&W Sigma 9mm and wish I had went with my intial choice, which was the Springfield. I am holding out on buying another pistol until I can get the Holy Grail (IMO)...

We will have to shoot the Sig sometime. I think I may be talking my Dad out of it since he doesn't shoot it...

If you are looking at a strctly at home hand gun the Taursus 45 is an excellent choice. I have owned several 45s both full size and compact and the Taurus shoots and handles as well as the more expensive ones. It will eat anything I've fed it so far , haven't tried reloads yet. However for a carry gun it's a little big and heavy. There are many fine compacts like the ones mentioned about but do yourself a favor and look at the Gock compacts. Excellent shooters, reliable and perfect size. It's nice to own a big name gun but name doesn't guarentee good results.

The Ruger P-90 is hard to beat for the money....very reliable...designed tuff...and very accurate....15 yds off handhttp://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/hainespd/15yd-gun.jpg25yds...http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o312/hainespd/25yd-gun.jpg
I have had good luck w/ a Star, (Its not a very tight shooter but fine for personal protection) which was ok untill I found a deal on a Colt Commander, over hauled by Wilson. My Holy Grail was a Les Baer. After nearly 20 years I found it. It was worth the wait. The problem is... It's to nice to use often, but I guess thats what always makes it special when I bring it out.
One thing I do know. I will probably never carry less than a 45. My P40 hasen't seen the light of day in years. I also agree w/ bowhunter57. Shoot any you can. If it dosen't "feel" good in your hand, aside from a grip change, pass.

If I weren't a dyed in the wool 1911 aficianado, I'd probably get the springfield XD .45. Great choice! The Ruger .45's are also a great choice.

Excellent advice.
Before you purchase may I suggest you take a trip to an indoor range that offers various models of handgun for rental. Try all you can get your hands on then make the decision. What works for many, may not work for you. In addition, when you do make your decision, get to the range and shoot your gun on a regular basis. Make sure it is 100% reliable. If it’s not, then don’t trust your life (or a loved ones life) on a gun that’s not 100%. Then take a trip to the range at LEAST once every 2 months or so and practice, practice, practice.
One last thing, if you have not tried a 1911 model gun, I would suggest you do so!

I bought an xd40 after doing a lot of homewrok looking for home defense/CCW. Check available options for the sights. Mine came with Hienie Straight 8's which has the Trijicon inserts. Have heard good things about the .45 version. I opted for the .40 because I already have a .45 which is a 1911 Kimber Custom Royal which I love and shoots like a dream.:)
