I go down every year for the free weekend in the summer....good fishing, no crowds, can't beat it....had some great days there. I love WV...never caught any huge rainbows, but some nice 4 or 5 lbs....and lots of medium size ones...lots of browns also...caught only one golden

Coonskinner,
I've lived here in WV all of my life. Have fished in many different streams around the state. Currently I am a full-time college student that will graduate in June of this year. I, most likely, can't make the trip with those of you that would want to go......BUT........I can sure point you in a direction that would make for an enjoyable trip. I'm not sure if your wanting to wade and fish or exclusively use a fly rod........but either way I can tell you several places to go. My wife and I, and the kids when they were still at home used to make several trips every spring. Most generally we would get up early and make the drive to arrive close to daylight and make a day of it. I can give you info on trips that involve driving from one place to another.....or......tell you of a place that you can drive and walk down a railroad track as far as you would like to walk and fish your way back to your vehicle. Let me know if you would like some suggestions. :D

Fly fishing and wading........hmmmmm...........I believe that I would try one, or both of these two places. There is a place called Bemis on Shafers Fork, this is where the railroad tracks run along the river for about 12 miles and is stocked twice every spring by rail. The only access to this stretch of the river is by following the river along the railroad tracks for as far as you want to walk. You could wade some of the way, but would have to walk the bank to get around some holes. Most people don't want to walk any further than they have to......also, knowing that it takes a little more room to work a fly rod, you should have this in numerous places. The other place is on the Elk River, close to Webster Springs in a little place called Bergoo. This is one of the places that a lot of fly-fisherman like to go. A decent chance at a nice sized Brown trout exists here. Again, you can wade parts of it, but would have to portage around some holes in the river. I know that if you go upstream so far, I think it's called Whitacre Falls that anything above this on the river for several miles is "catch and release" only. I believe that you can do a search on mapquest or something online and by using the names of the towns can get directions to both. I gotta tell ya.......they are both "out of the way" places......but the roads are decent to travel. Hope this helps, and if you can't find directions, let me know. I have a book of the whole state in topo's........I can find anyplace that exists in WV.

Never fished the Elk river but heard good things.....I've always fished the Cherry and the Cranberry rivers.....theres a nice place to stay, and if you want to camp out, you can do that too.....right in the area where you camp....theres a gate up and you have to walk the rest of the way in....they fly in with a helicopter and drop the fish in...that's how they restock...the fishing in the spring and fall is awesome.....look up Richwood, that's the town both of these rivers are at....

Coony,
I grew up in Wv and have fly fished most of the better known streams there. The Cranberry is a great wilderness area, it can get a little crowded. The Elk is probably one of the best fly fishing destinations in WV if not the east. However, the trout there can be frustrating- size 22- 26 flies.
Shavers Fork is another cool place that you can find both wilderness and some alone time. It is big water and the river has very few acces points. I camped there for a weekend one year and never saw another human being.
I have also fished the Williams, the Blackwater and the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac. All great rivers with wonderful scenery and good numbers of trout.
I have not fished the New, but if I did it would be for smallmouth.

You might want to check out www.wvangler.com. The sight is full of flyfishing info from around the state.

coonskinner-

If you dont mind a couple new fly fisherman coming with, a buddy and I would love to come. We would just need to know a couple weeks in advance so we can make sure to request off work. Being a server, the weekend is when we make our money, but a chance to get out of NW Ohio, fish, and learn a few things about a sport we both are trying to learn this year....well that invaluable!

What sort of rod/reel are you looking for? I just upgraded my rod to a St Croix Avid, upgraded the reel last year to an Orvis Battenkill. That means my old outfit is available if you just wanted a cheap rod/reel to learn on, coonie. It is a Cabela's Letort rod, 8'6" 5wt, with a Cabela's Cahill reel. It is about 9-10 years old but still in good shape. Let me know if you are interested.

This sounds like a great trip for sure. I wish it was easier for me to make plans further out than it is right now as I'd sure like to go. I've not fished WV before so that would be cool to add another state to my list and see some new terrain.

I just got back last night, and it was a pretty decent trip. I always hate to leave that area. Here are a few photos from the trip:

Cream,

Is that last picture from the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac? It looks like the Seneca Rocks area.

What other rivers did you fish? I miss living there!!!

Ha, good call! We camped at Yokum's campground (aka Princess Snowbird), and fished Seneca Creek, Shaver's Fork, and North Fork of the South Branch. It really is an amazing area!

Nice pics!! That's a REALLY beefy brookie. How far is that from the Ohio border, and do those streams support trout year round??

Some of the smaller streams have wild trout (not stocked in 20+ years) so obviously they support fish, but the stocked streams we only tend to see holdover brown trout. I don't know if the water just gets too warm for rainbows and brookies, but we do catch holdover browns in September several months after stocking and before fall stockings. It is a ways to drive, though. From Athens County we are looking at a 3.5 hour drive.

I grew up in WV as well. The elk, bemis, and north fork of south branch are all excellent places to fish for trout. Also all have several other streams that are pretty decent within 15-20 minute drive. anyway ya go probly won't go wrong if nothing else the scenery is simply amazing.

Unfortunantly I have this week off... unexpectedly...I cut a 2 inch long gash in my hand...now I have to find a way to fish one handed since I cant use my left hand for anything haha....but still interested in that WV trip, just gotta know when to request off work. :)
