Next fall Ill be a freshman at Shawnee State University. I dont plan on making the 1hour and 40min trip home to hunt or at least not during the week. So the closest available public hunting land would be Shawnee State Forrest. Does anyone know the best hunting spots or most accessible.
Secondly where is the closest bow and gun shop...(besides walmart..:D)
Thanks

Theres one that's been there for years....you can almost spit on it from the college..not sure if they have bows, I think they do...not forsure about shawnee forest ....I know that there is good hunting in several sections, but I would have to get the map out and point them to you. By the way....Shawnee is a good college. Graduated from there about 9 years ago.

I've always been tempted to take a trip down to Shawnee FST. I've always just gone the extra hour + to Wildcat hollow to hunt with a buddy. I drove through that area years ago while working as an insurance salesman. I thought it was very beautiful. What sections in general are considered good hunting?

Im a junior at Shawnee now, but i dont live on campus. There is a gun shop a couple blocks over from the campus, but im pretty sure that they don't carry any bows, mabe a few??? But if you drive up the river to Wheelersburg, i think that they have a hunting store that deals and works on bows, i know that they sell hutning supplies. Ive never been to it, but i have heard alot of radio commercials about it. Can't remember the name either??? But good luck at Shawnee!

You will have a 20 to 35 minute drive to Shawnee where the terrain can be brutal, and deer are scarce. Wayne National Forest is almost the same drive, way more deer, and the terrain won't kill you. On your way, are the only shops in the area and they are very small. Better yet, get a farmgirlfriend from Minford, Lucasville, South Webster, or Otway.

I agree W/ Tink, Shawnee is 65.000 acres and the reason deer are scarce is because people try to hunt them from 100 yd from the road. Go to the Lodge off of 125 and grab a map. Start looking at the bridal trails and the topo maps. When the ice storm hit 6 or so years ago it made a virtual deer haven with all the downed trees. Also you have Brush Creek State Forest land up on SR 73 by Rarden. Not too much bow pressure but a lot of good deer. If you have any questions let me know. Bills Bait House at Lake White in Waverly ( North Of Portsmouth is pretty good, I trust them.) 1 last thing if you do anything eat at the Scioto Ribber on Gallia Street, you will not be disappointed. its walking distance from the college......

The ribber is excellent!!couple glasses of portsmouth pilsner with your dinner:) i work with some guys that hunt jackson and pike county (we are in south western ohio) that always make an out of the way trip to the ribber before coming home..totally off topic but is the hamberger inn still around?

I graduated from SSU and here is a piece of advice: Screw hunting and get yourself outta school first...that's what I did, gave it up for a few years to get through college, and 18 years later I hunt whenever I want and let the employees run my business from Late Oct until the 1st of Dec so I can hunt, and believe me, I spend more per year in hunting and camping now then I ever did for Tuition for college!

Good luck, hopefully you will be an engineering graduate.

I have not looked at the site in a while.
Thank you everyone for the information I mite do as oldhat said and give up bowhunting for a few years but I will use my traditions hawkins to bust a few vinton county deer during gun and muzzleloader season. well ill just have to see how things work out the information on food joints is very helpful as well.
Thanks again
