I did some fishing around the Columbus area this weekend before going to the Deer and Turkey Expo. We met up with a couple guys from down there that knew some honey holes. Unfortunately the melting snow last week had the water levels up pretty high. We first tried the tailwaters below the dam at Delaware Lake... chocolate milk and no saugeyes. Managed to snag a few carp though. Next stop was below the dam at Alum creek. We had heard that the muskies were biting there so we tied on the stickbaits and gave it a shot. The water there actually wasnt bad at all. I had one bite but no muskies were landed. An asian guy fishing down from us hooked into one while we were there and it broke his line. Finally we headed to Hoover Reservoir and fished the tailwaters there. That was by far the worst fishing conditions there. Raging chocolate milk... needless to say that was a waste of time there. We didnt catch any fish but it was cool because that was the first time that I fished either of those places. I think once the water slows down the bite will be on for sure. I know I prolly should've posted under Central Ohio but I live up here so this is where it's going.

I never fished Hoover or Alum, but I intend to this spring. What am I getting into? I have a Smoker Craft 16.5' with a 9.9 on the back, so I should be OK there. What are the lakes really noted for? How is the fishing pressure mid week and week ends? Thanks.

Fred,

Both lakes are great for saugeye. They also have some nice crappie fishing. Bass fishing is better at Alum as it has some real hefty smallies. Fishing pressure mid-weeek is usually light to none. Weekends on both see a LOT of fishing presure. One nice thing about Hoover is that it is a quiet lake since there is a 9.9 hp limit so no jet skiers and such. Let us know how you do if you make it out on one of these lakes.

Jbrown,

You were in the right places doing the right presentation and just didn't connect. It sounds like the conditions weren't the best. Maybe next time the water level will be more ideal.
