Ode to the K-Mart Special

The other day my friend and I were talking about fly fishing and discussing our plans for this summer. We were talking about all our past fishing trips over the years. One thing we had a good laugh about was one of my fly rods. I bought this combo many years ago and I love this thing. It came as a K-Mart Special package with a Shakespeare 8 foot 6-weight rod and reel. Shortly after I bought it, I put an old Scientific Anglers reel on it. We were laughing because this combo has caught 10 times more fish than my Orvis, St. Croix, and Fenwick rods combined. It has survived everything that was thrown at it, and I have caught everything from Crappie to Bullheads with this thing. I have no idea why I like it so much, but it will be used for many more years.

I have 2 zebco 33's that i've owned i bet 12 years now and my kids are using them now. Every once in awhile you get ahold of something that lasts forever................LOL........................ .Rich

I have that same combo too. I have had it for about 2o years. I still have the plastic reel on it that came with it. The reel now has a bolt through the center holding it together. Works just fine.

Ironically I also had the same combo from kmart as I related this story to a guy at work last night, and now I see this topic on here. It was awesome until my sister crushed the reel with her car tire. so my parents bought me an expensive reel from bass pro or cabelas and i don't like it nearly as much.

I didn't have that one but I had a Berkly lime rod thatI saved my allowance up for and bought it for $13 and a Martin single action reel for another $6. Had a lot of fun and caught quite a few fish on it. :)
