is it worth designing a pattern of 1-2 acre plots versus having larger parcels? is it a waste of time working small plots, will the deer use them up too fast?

Smaller plots are easier to hunt over most of the time and are even referred to as "killing plots." They are DEFINITELY worth planting, but if you can use a Plot Saver or other means of just keeping deer off of them for a few weeks to allow them to get a good start, it would be a great idea. After this coming spring, my buddy and I will probably have roughly 8 acres in plots planted, and only one patch will be over 2 acres in size.
If you ask me, it is well worth the effort to plant smaller chunks.

Small plots are worth planting. If you are going to only plant an acres or less, how many deer you have on the property is going to determane what you might can plant, especially if you have alot of does. Any kind of peas, like soybean, lab lab, etc. will get mowed down quick by a big deer population before they can get big enough to produce.

Small food plots are great. The larger food plots should be your feeding plots that you dont hunt over except for maybe some late season muzzeloader or gun. The smaller plots like cream said are usually referred to as the killing plots or the plots that you should hunt over. Hour glass shaped plots are the best for hunting. Make it really neck down into a pinch in the middle and hang a stand right there on that pinch point. It acts just like a funnel. You should be considered about keeping deer off that plot untill right before season or they will devour the whole plot before season even comes in. Stake out the plot, tie ribbon around your plot and spray it with some type of plot saver. There is a special spray that you should use, you might want to check on it. I forget the name. Food plots are def. the way to go. http://www.ohiosportsman.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif
