Boy this is your lucky day.
I just read on one other website where a guy drives the coyote nuts using bacon grease for bait. Yes he is using it for bait. He told me all you need to do is put it all over the ground and step back a 100yds or so and wait........ if there is coyotes in the area they will come in to that smail. Myself I think he may have a very good way to bait coyotes in. That smail from that bacon grease would even make me come running.
He told me a TN Fish & Game officer told him this just today.

I am going to get some bacon grease and give it a try next time I am able to get out.

Sweet. so no funny calling devices? and where would they most likely be at "yotes" got a few public hunting ground with marshes ,woods and fields. If i was to hunt at night and had a red light would they not be able to see it?

The only problem I can see with this in Ohio is in the winter... It'll be a hard as a rock clump and wouldn't give off the smell as much a liquid.. Sounds great though I'm gonna try it.

Yes a red light will work.
As far as telling you where would be a good place to go ......... all I can tell you right now is a good time with all the snow on the ground to look for tracks and yes a caller will work but here in Ohio I have found out they really don't work that well. I have found out baiting work good and just setting and waiting.

You have a good point there !
Maybe if you can get it on the ground just lay the can you have it in on the ground and hope for the best. Also maybe a little coyote call will help it along with the bacon grease smail.

I am going to start saving up some bacon grease all I no and give this a try. You never know this may really work here in Ohio better than a caller or using road kill like I have always done in the pass.

Just go out where you want to hunt a little early, pack a single burner propane and a skillet, cook up a couple pounds of bacon and dump the hot grease out on the ground. Take the cooked bacon with you as a cover scent (it's ok to eat some of it) and back off a 100 yards or so and wait...How's that for "smoking up" the hunt :cheeky-smiley-022: ;) :D

Seriously Rick that is a good tip, never thought of it before and will definitely have to try it out!

What would be the difference if you pour it on th ground or leave it in say a coffee can, wouldn't it still smell like beacon grease???

Hey I do like what you said deerhunt45 about taking some of it back with you to use as a cover sent and you can eat some of it to.

i dont hunt coyotes much but if i do again i will try this...one reason i tried my caller the other day and it failed to work...i agree with makin bacon right on the spot as this produces the smell the most...i will prolly use my lodge logic skillet as it makes very good bacon which i intend to eat...may as well...only problem i see is hiding the fire...but that prolly can be figured out easy...this is very interesting, nothin i ever heard of before...i have never had luck callin and callin can bring in everthing but a coyote or even a fox...

Well, as long as it's liquid you can pour it where you want. What Jack is alluding to is when it's semi-solid (cold) it doesn't give off near the scent as when it's still liquid ???

The bacon thing is a joke right? :dizzy:

Coyotes can be called on a consistant basis in OHIO. You just need to learn how to do it. It is far from easy, It takes a helluva lot more than buying a caller and or a hand call, and squalling like a dying rabbit. There are many pieces to the game that have to be just right everytime , nothing can be half assed when dealing with coyotes.

The wind, wether it is direction or wind speed has alot to do with consistant success. Always try and call cross wind and leave the downwind side open. Make them pay for trying to get the scent of what is making all the noise. No need to worry about any cover scents, it's a waste of time. Coyotes have not one curious bone in there body, they smell in parts per million, which a human couldn't even imagine how good that is. Meaning, you can TRY and cover yourself up with Smoke, pure skunk essence oil and still, they will smell YOU. Plain and simple....kill them before they get to your scent cone.

Sounds, It makes no difference if you use a jack rabbit distress or a cottontail as far as one or the other being native to your area. Instinct drives the opportunist bone in a coyote, he hears something in distress and is in the mood to check it out he will approach. It makes no difference wether he is hungry or not, I called 1 coyote in and watched him stop as many as 3 times on the way in and catch and eat 3 field rats and still keep coming. Called them off of deer carcasses also, If the conditions are right and they feel secure approaching, the opportunist instinct will get them killed. As for that 3 rat meal on the way in, I got it all on film, but would take way to long to post. I may try to piece it together though and post it.

Elevated stand sites, not moving at all, other than your eyeballs scanning for a coyote approaching. Completey camoed, head to toe, not slammin truck doors, don't talk on the way to your stand. There are so many things that have to be right to make it happen. When you do them all right and there are coyotes in hearing distance of your stands it will happen. When it does...evaluate your setup and mimmick it from there on out and tweak and improve on your success and calling coyotes consistantley will happen for you.

Best of luck to you!

take a can of sterno with you cut another coffee can in half and put the sterno can in there and the other on top of it .that should keep it warm enough for the smell of the bacon to carry .
Eagle Eye ,the best thing i can tell you about calling is study the area you are in ,if they a eating turkeys and deer ,you .maybe better of setting up a turkey decoy or fawn bleet .trail cams come in handy too it best look around when you find tracks follow them and see where they go maybe a kill spot ,then you can see what they are eating ,or even better a den ,especaly now during mating season .set up outside the den and wait .the snow on the ground is going to give you the advantage now ,in the sence that you can easily see where they are going and have been .like these guys said it s hard to call them in here in ohio ,your better off with bait .good luck

Ok, So who has a trail cam and a bunch of bacon grease??? Lets see if it even works before we doom many hunter to sitting in the field for hours calling over a can of bacon grease. Put it out and see how long it takes some critters to find it.

Guys I have talk with my one buddy in Illinois who just about kills one or two coyote every week over there about this bacon grease deal. He told me he thinks it may work but he did say that you may still have to use a hand call or a foxpro call to help bring them in. He did say that the bacon grease smell should keep them in the area longer plus if you see them stop useing the caller and let the smell of the bacon grease do its thing.
Myself I going to give it a try as soon as the weather warms up a bit so I can get out and try it. With no feeling in my left leg I can't be outside to long so I have to wait till it warms up a bit.

My buddy in Illinois may try this bacon grease deal weekend if he gets some time off work.

I have no doubts that bacon grease will appeal to a coyote. But to use it as a bait while calling is useless. To put bacon grease out on the ground and sit and wait ....I couldn't sit that long :mischeif:

This coyote was killed at 1:00 in the afternoon just across the ohio border in Indiana. using Jackrabbit distress ( which there are none in Indiana). That is a great sound from Foxpro. When all the pieces are put together and the setup is right they will come in anytime of the day.
