when i hunt, i am a firm believer in acorns as being the prime food source for deer. i always seem to value my time and strategy around oaks and areas with abundant acorn drops. i think that bucks feel more comfortable concentrating their browsing time in the woods rather than out in the open.

1. what are some of your takes on hunting the edges of large food plots, such as corn, grass, and wheat fields?
2. do any of you archery hunt on the edges of fields?

I don't know that a good white oak acorn tree can be topped as far as being a preferable food source. This past year was really our first for plots. The acorn crop on the piece of ground was not that great, there were just not many trees producing a lot of nuts there last year.

We hunted the plot edges and trails leading to the plots several times with great success in both seeing deer and killing does. We identified a few key spots, like a funnel between plots and huge trails leading to and from the food, and hunted them. We saw some bucks around the plots, but no giants. We did get a few good ones on cameras a scrapes around them, but always after dark. This was really Year 1 of our management plan there, so it should get even better!

i agree with acorns being the prefered food source usually.

Food plots can be great places to hunt, but try to have "hunting plots" so they are easier to hunt. Some times with big foodplots you might see 80 deer in a siting and never have 1 come into range. I you can establish the best travel routes to the foodplots they will be your best bet.
