Before I left for work last night, I got a call from my uncle telling me I should stop by that evening and check out what my cousin Jacob found. The kid is 13 and has the most amazing luck I have ever seen when it comes to finding sheds, so I had a feeling it would be something special. Little did I know how true that would prove...
Of course the kids were out of school yesterday, so Jacob couldn't think of any better way to spend an off-day than walking through the woods with his new rabbit dog chasing after rabbits and looking for sheds. My uncle said he was only gone 20 minutes when he came back with this treasure.
This deer is somewhat of a local legend. There have been two guys coming over from West Virginia to hunt this deer for three years now. I think I may have seen it two years ago in August after putting in hay. Several of the local farmers we know had seen it this year. We believe the shed in the upper-left of the picture with all Jacob's treasures, belongs to this deer. The brow tine is almost identical and we thought it was last year's shed when he found it. If that is the case, then I have video of this buck last year in our hay field.
I think I can honestly say that this is one of the most impressive racks I have ever had my hands on. I consider this an "ordinary" buck. This deer is from my county and from a farm I have hunted several dozen times. It was not grown on a farm, or in Illinois or Iowa. My dad's buck was something else, but this buck just grabs your attention...
Any ideas on how to score that left side? I know making the call on what is the main beam will drastically affect the score. The pothole is pretty neat and I think may have contributing to what I believe is the main beam curling down. There is still some velvet on there as well.

Nice rack, but I wouldn't call it a shed find, maybe a DEAD FIND would be more appropriate. Any idea how this buck was killed? It looks as if it has been dead for quite a while. I would be sad to find such a nice buck in this condition and to know that he won't be around next year.

I'm not sure I ever called it a shed...
We think it died from EHD. It was close to the creek and has obviously been there for a while. The bones were scattered around pretty well and there was no meat/hide left at all.

Wow!! That is quite a find.
Just don't adverise it to much though. If you do he might have a game warden stop in to visit.

I got a picture for you guys tomorrow that will make a few of you guys feel like a bunch of nothings in the shed hunting world. I know it makes me feel like a total waste! I got a call from my uncle just now and you boys are gonna want to see what my 13-year old cousin found on his shed hunting trip this morning. I will get pictures of his other ones while I am at it. Seems Plaid Junior is a magnet for sheds...

Heck of a deer...Stinks that he died that way. I know some spots in Ohio got hit hard but some of the racks the KY guys have been finding this shed hunting season will make you cry. I saw one pic from a guy who had found probably 2 dozen dead buck between 2 farms...and more than half were 130"+...At least your cousin found it and not someone else.

AWESOME deer, but like thunderflight said, don't advertise it much without a tag on it. I think if you call the warden he can tag it.

No kidding. :nono:
I have been around long enough to know that the persecution would come for not having a tag. I have taken the proper steps to ensure the rack is not taken. Although I apparently do not know the difference between a shed and a DEAD FIND, I am smart enough to cover his ass...

What the hell is your issue? I was being sarcastic when I said that. You might want to hang around a little longer before you start $h!t for no real reason on a thread that was meant to be about an awesome find for young man that has more on the ball than 99% of boys his age. Did I somehow ruin your month by leading you to think it was a shed and it turned out to be a "DEAD FIND"? Does that somehow offend you? If so, take it up with me via PM. If not, forget about it and next time cash your two cents in on something to keep your fingers busy...

I wasn't persecuting you or your cousin about the tag. My comment was meant to be helpful so you don't run into the same mess that a buddy of mine from Johnstown did a few years back. He had found a 140 class buck dead in the cornfield behind his home and put the rack on his front porch. One day his door bell rings and the game warden wrote him a ticket and took the rack.

No worries Chuck. I knew it was coming from someone. I wasn't offended by the suggestion at all. I was more upset about the "Shed v. DEAD FIND" police when I wrote that. We are in the process of having the GW out. Its all good...

Well I guess one of the things you will figure out over time around this place, is sarcasim is best saved for the people you know. I don't know you, so I don't read it that way. Had it been Jeff, or Matt, or Tom, or Chuck, or Dale, I would have got it.
It is what it is at this point. Let's move on...

Deer hunt? LOL Hell that kid has killed more deer than some of the resident experts around here. I think he killed his 14th deer this year. He killed his first deer at 6. His 10-year old sister busted one with a heart shot from single shot 410 at 40 yards when she was 8. We hunt in my family and that is about it...

That is a good buck anywhere - I am sure he was very excited.
That rack has a lot of character - I would consider using the cape from another large buck sombody in the family shoots (and doesn't want to mount) and get him mounted. I think he would make a great mount.
Shame a smart old buck like him could survive the elements of nature, dodge hunters (even driving from out of state) and meets his end from EHD:(

You make it back to Ohio yet?

Yeah man. I'm back in Ohio. The only problem is I'm living in Westerville (Columbus suburb). Have to live in the city for a couple years until my fiancee (wife in less than a month) gets done with her master's at Ohio State and then I'll be looking for a place out in the sticks. On a more positive note, I got a part-time side job at Gander Mountain! Can we say employee discount?
