As the title states, what is your favorite locator call out in the turkey woods? Anything crazy or off the wall that works for you? I just purchased the new Knight and Hale Team Pinpoint Locator Kit from Bass Pro, comes with an owl, crow and pileated woodpecker call.

I use Owl hooter first thing in the AM and crow calls later.
I want to try something new this spring, I've heard that dog whistles(the kind humans can't hear) work good. Has anyone tried this?

I haven't heard that, pun not intended. It sounds interesting.

I use an owl hoot in the evening if I'm trying to roost a bird. In the mornings, I usually move into the area I expect the birds to be in, If I haven't heard anything by the time the first real crows start popping off, then I'll use a Primos "power crow", it's extremely high pitched and usually gets a response. Later in the day I go with a high pitched diaphram call or a sqeaky box call.

In the evenings and in the late mornings I have better luck with a coyote howler. I make a high-pitched howl like a pup howl. The Primos Lil Dog works well, and is my favorite predator call, so it pulls double duty. In the early AM, an owl works well.
Here's a question: has anyone ever used a goose call? I hunt one area near a woodland pond that always has geese, and I hear birds gobbling at the geese every year.

My favorite is my son and his owl call (no call used just his mouth)...I have found goose calls work pretty well during daylight hours.

I've used goose calls before and had em gobble to them. When they are on the roost an regular old owl hoot is tough to beat.
Later in the day I've had lmy best succes getting them to gobble by just cutting real hard.If a bird is goobling on his own I don't usually try to get him to shick gobble at all. I'll usually just sit tight and let him gobble on his own and slip in on em

I will second the opinion that a coyote howel makes a great locator call.

Owl call. I do it with my hands. They go nuts everytime. I've heard them respond to some really weird noises.

a tin "bean" can, boot string and pine tar.....
open bean's and eat them if your hungry, punch hole about the dia of boot string in bottom of can (opposite the opened end), push boot string thru can bottom until it comes thru the open end of can, tie knot in boot string at open end of can, then pull string back from the bottom of the can....make sure knot is large enough not to pass thru the hole. Now apply pine tar to boot string.
hold bottom of can and point open end toward where you think turkey's might be roosted, with your index finger and thumb placed about mid way of the boot string, gently pull the string allowing your clinched fingers to slide down the boot string....like your squeezing watter from a wet boot string!
The sound will be extremely loud and simulate a moose in heat or a sick bellering cow....turkeys WILL gobble!
Experiment with different can sizes and both leather and synthetic boot strings until you get the most obnoxtious sound you can achieve!
I'll bet somebody is waiting for a fart joke since i suggested eating the beans!

primos owl call.
but a remington 597 .22 got the bird to shock call last year. Just so there is no miss understandings I will tell the whole story.
I was poping off a few rounds with the 597 last spring yearly in the morning around 9:00 am. and a tom shock gobbled back everytime I pulled the trigger I did this 3 times.then I could take no more and ran 50 yards back to the house to grab my box call and a shotgun in the hopes he'd still be in the area. I got back in position and hit the box a few times and he came right in, a nice tom with a 9" beard. I busted him at about 30 yards. The odd thing is I had no camo on exept for my TC hat but I was dresed in all darker colors. Anyway what a great bird and a nice little story.

I have seen, and heard, gobblers go off at overhead airplanes, car doors shutting, horns, releases from natural gas pressure stations, dogs barking, and human coughs! I have even yelled at Jakes close to the blind and got them to gobble.
I always start out with an owl hooter early in the morning, and use a crow call or a screaming hawk after good light. The crow call seems to spark the best reactions, but there have been times when it seemed that the screaming hawk was the only thing harsh enough to make them shock gobble. It's all about the right call at the right time.
