I was wondering if anyone hunts the Wayne Nat Forest down around Ironton District. Is it decent bow hunting, and whats the terrain like down there. Ive never been there and was thinking of trying it out next year. Its a few hours closer than where Ive been going.

Hi...

The terrian is STEEP......there is no agriculture, and BIG woods. There are big bucks in there, but the hunting can be very hard. One of the main things to over come in that part of the country when your hunting public is 4 wheelers and having hunters come in on you. If your right in the ironton area.......it lies right on the ohio river. Along the river there is almost no woods and its all industry. There are some big crop fields and sparse stands of trees, but its almost all hunted. These areas are owned by private individuals. When you come up 93 area....or there abouts, that's when you'll run into wayne. Don't get me wrong, there's big bucks in there, but they can be a challenge.

Sounds like a great place to hunt then, Hard to get into and hard to hunt. Sounds like a great hiding spot, something worth looking into. If you want the big ones then you have to be willing to go where others won't...

So. Ohio Outfitters pretty much nailed it. This is some of my hunting grounds, and it is rough hunting. If it's not 4 wheelers its other hunters! There is not much public land around also, way more private. You are better off to head out 93 and find public land out that way. It is still very rough terrain (steep and hilly), but there is alot more free public land to roam, without worrying about trespassing on private property.

Thanks guys. I guess I should clarify when I say Ironton District I meant the entire area in Lawrence, Gallia, And whatever other counties may have the National forest in them in the very southeastern district. When ya'll say go out 93 do you mean on up into Lawrence county

most public land does not allow 4 wheelers, there is some public land designated for 4 wheeler riding but not for hunting...i never heard or seen one where i was last year in the athens district near nelsonville...a guy that was camped where we were had one but got a visit from the wayne forester and then a game warden basically telling him to leave it on the trailer...i have yet to see any public land in ohio that is not great hunting...good luck:D
