I need help getting rid of two skunks that keep pestering my dog. Any hints or suggestions. When I have seen it I can't gt to my bow fast enogh. We live in a pretty busy area, so my .22 is out of the question. Thanks in advance.

You might try one of those live animal traps. Then you could either move them to another location or cappem with your bow.

If you use the livetrap, you can fill a trashcan with water and stick the whole thing in there, skunk and all.
Works with other urban "furry" critters, too.

If you do use a live trap then make sure you keep the skunk's tail end away from you....
I've heard that it's best to throw a tarp over the cage before you pick it up too.

I appreciate the info. Is it possible to get that close to the trap without the thing lettin' loose on you? Also, what is a good bait to use?
Thanks

What I've heard is that if you hold a blanket in front of you and walk up to the skunk (in the trap) nice and slow, you can drape the blanket over them without them spraying. I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS OUT!!! yet. My Chocolate Lab got skunked in February and he STILL smells when he gets wet. :(
As for bait, your guess is good as mine... The only bait I've used is cat food, but then the objective was slightly different

Our skunk problem has been an ongoing process. We were too close for comfort on Saturday night. I was heading to the backyard and was halfway around my car when I saw the beast under the backside of my car with his tail straight up. I have an 11 week old golden retriever and I scared him to death when I ran and tugged him along in the opposite direction. I know that he would just see the skunk as a play buddy. I don't want him to learn the hard way.

You could always put bait out with rat poison in it. Of course your also running the risk of the skunk crawling under your house and dieing..... Guess he'd get the last laugh then....

In the May 2003 issue of FUR-FISH-GAME, page 59 the question was asked "How do I relocate or dispatch a skunk w/o getting sprayed?"
It was said to slowly approach the cage w/ a wet blanket, curtain style, large enough to cover the whole cage. If the critter starts to get edgey, stop & wait . Once he seems to calm down start approaching again. Put the blanket over the cage so no light can get in. Skunks are calmed by the darkness. By handling the cage gently you can relocate the the skunk w/o getting sprayed.
If all else fails.
In the Jan./Feb. 2003 issue of POINTING DOG JOURNAL, page31 I have this recipe hi-lighted.
"One gallon warm water, half cup dishwashing detergent, 16 oz. hydrogen peroxide, quarter-cup of baking soda. Mix together in a jug or bucket until soapy, then knead into dog's coat. Odor will vanish within minutes."
GOOD LUCK! :D
P.S. Use apple w/ peanut butter for bait. ;)

call a varmint co. to trap it...now for bait if yuh do it yourself, peanut butter seems to work well for most critters.

Thunderflight just came up with a classic, it could reach cult status. :D :D :D
All this skunk talk reminds me of an old song...
There's a dead skunk in the middle of the road, dead skunk in the middle of the road.
There's a dead skunk in the middle of the road and it's stinkin to high heaven. :D :D :D

Did you catch the skunk yet??I had one under the deck last year.I used the cage trap and caught him the first night. The blanket worked, and I threw it in a trash can full of water.I just used peanut butter and jelly, and 2 strategically placed cage traps. :D :D
Got rats under there this year,caught,3 so far.

MASHUNTER18,
Well, no luck yet. I thought my dad had the right sized trap, but it is too small. So, I am looking for the right size now. We had another run-in last night. I raced upstairs to get my bow, but I was too late:( I'll keep you updated.
