What kind of reel do you use most?
I don't like the round baitcasters, don't use spincasters, only use spining when I have to.
I love low-profile baitcasters.

For cats- round baitcasters out of the boat. Fishing stripers/hybrids.....in tailwaters, then it's the big spinning reels. I have them on 11' St croix surf rods. I was using #16 Mega Drag reels, but I got a #20 this year too. I have a few 7'-8 1/2 & 10' surf rods too, and use a #12 & # 8 Ahabs on those.
I'm running small spinning reels with crankbaits for walleyes on 7' rods trolling here. Vertical jigging...it's a round reel too, an old Pro Max. I do have one low profile, it was my 1st baitcaster, a Diawa PS5BB, smooth as can be, took me forever to get the hang of it. Actually learned on an Abu 6500 with heavy weight, then the smaller reel was easy.
Here's a little channel cat on my jigging rig. It's from last winter.

I finally got the reels I wanted. I have 4 of these Shimano CT700 reels and 2 of the Abu 7000C4 LeverDrag reels. That gives me 6 nice outfits for the big kitty cats. I'll be doing some horse trading on some other reels I won't be needing. Haven't decided yet, have to give my son & his buddies first shot on them. (Some Quantums)

Although I would trade it for Jim's Calcutta
Hey Jim looks like the fishing aint going to be very good on the Ohio this week?
Yea, you can be sure I'd be using the round baitcasters if I were going after those big cats you guys do!
I've heard that round baitcasters are better for bigger fish? Is this true? If so why?
I've only used them for about a year, and that was a long time ago. I'd have a hard time giving up my Daiwa X-series tho.

My opinion is because you have a beefier drag, more line capacity, and it will hold larger diameter(heavier) lines. An added feature is that if you break off alot of line, you still have alot left. I've never encountered that .....yet, but you have that backup if it does.

Actually, I think you forgot one type in your poll. It is the trolling reel. I guess that might fall under round bait caster but I can't really cast with mine.
I use this type most often.
Flatheadmaniac
12-24-2002, 10:04 AM
would be spinning reels as i fish most of the year in streams for smallies..but for flatheads its ONLY big round baitcasters for me too..mostly my Calcutta 700's and Quantum Big Irons(410, 420 & 430CX).
For smallies, whitebass and everything else small i go with my Shimano Stradic(2002 & 2003 model), Shimano Ultegra(japan version of stradic), Bio Master(japan version of Sustain) and last Daiwa Emblem Z, X & S.
Since i also only fish rivers and streams and DONT fish for largemouths, i dont use those low profile baitcasters.

I've been buyin' stuff from bass pro from day#1 & I think before that they were called the outhouse or something like that ~ anywho, I've hit a few bumps in the road with them, but not often .. it's kinda like - buyer beware compared to Cabela's imho

Erie,
Yea, I understand. There's a lot of companies out there (Not just fishing related) that some have great experience, some have less than stellar experience and others won't give them the time of day because of bad experience.
My next purchase could be a nightmare so who knows? lol

We have a few baitcasters but mostly use the spinning reels just because the type of fish we fish for. Well, we use the baitcasters more for trolling believe it or not.
vc1111

Fish, generally the baitcasting reels have zero problem with line twist. They are used for lures heavier than 3/8 ounce or so, and handle heavier line without breaking. The spinning reels can do the job, but overall they do not handle heavier fishing applications such as trolling or casting heavier as well.
I prefer the Shimano Bantan Curado for my heavy duty work. I can also cast very light lures on heavy line like 17 to 20 pound test. I have used them for 1/4 ounce spinnerbaits for Northern pike and also used them for castinng heavy musky baits. The model I have is a high speed version which I like for using musky baits like the Suick or Reef Hawg. I have owned quite a few different baitcasters, and the Bantam Curado is the best high speed baitcaster I've bought. They are a bit pricey though...about $125
Hi vc1111.
I was wondering what the difference was between the round and low profile baitcasters were. :)
I figured the round ones were more heavy duty because all the big kids here use them. :)
I only used one a few times and mainly stick with a low-profile and use a spinning reel for my lighter weights.
vc1111
12-29-2002, 12:58 AM
Fish, there are good reels in both profiles. It is largely a matter of preference.
The round reels seem to have a much higher line capacity, which is nice if you're using mono line in 20 or 30 pound test. If you are using the newer high tech braided lines, like spiderwire it doesn't matter that much because they are very very thin, so the low profile reels do a nice job and are easier to hold in your hand as you reel.
Dollar for dollar, the Abu Garcia 5500C3 reels are probably the most versatile reels that I would classify as a "best buy." They only cost about $65 to $70 or less.
I now longer buy the expensive spinning reels. They don't seem to last much longer than the less expensive ones...not for me at least.

Have you guys seen the Shimano Calcutta 50TE GT? This is an awesome little reel........it would be perfect for throwing small baits or jigging for eyes. Only about $380 This reel is no more round than a pop can.

Have you also seen the Calcutta Conquest 50(12 BB's)?
There are 5 models of the CALCUTTA line..the CT & TE which we have in the USA..then there is the TE-GT , XT and Conquest.
The Conquest is thier top of the line Calcutta..check this link out...http://www.japantackle.com/Conquest.htm
Look at the very bottom of the page to see a comparison between the Conquest, TE-GT and TE...:D
I am lucky enough to have a few of the Conquest reels, and your right the 50 series is going to be PERFECT for throwing small baits..but NOT to EYES..but for stream wading smallies;) :D
I got the 51 model as i like to use left hand reels for throwing lures and such...for all my other CAT reels i prefer right hand retrieves.
That site doesnt show the newly released...Conquest 700 though(as some think its not out yet..lol)
So since i cant post pics. up on here..i cant show you what one looks like.... But Ryan, you'll see it this summer when we go cattin;)
Heres the XT version..pretty nice, but doesnt have that many ball bearings compared to the TE-GT or Conquests.

maybe i should reiterate.i find it to be rare.guess i was refering to a couple that i frequent and one of them ,in my opinion, has a tendancy to be a little more trigger happy than this one.they booted someone recently, and though i don't know what went on behind the scenes, based on what i did see,i think they crossed the line.however,i think the person being refered to in this case has been known to wear out his welcome on more than one site, including this one,due to his attitude and treatment of other people, after being repeatedly warned.i always try my best to see both sides of an issue with an open mind.i have even come to his defense in the past, when i thought he wasn't getting a fair shake.i feel that if a person can't get along with the majority of others and strikes out for no good reason, then the majority is not wrong.some people kinda live by the old addage that "there's nothing wrong with me,it's the rest of the world that's screwed up".i for one, don't buy that.
