I recenlty bought a handheld gps unit, after doing so a friend of mine told me that it was illeagal to hunt with it. After sending an email to ODNR I still don't have a true answer to this.
Is it illeagal to have in my possesion while hunting, a handheld gps unit?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have never heard of such a thing. So far as I know they are perfectly legal.

I think your friend is confused with using a 2 way radio to pursue deer.
I have never heard of a GPS being illegal to use at anytime.
What would be the reason it is illegal ???
Are they afraid you will mark on the GPS an area where you seen a deer for later reference ??? LOL!!!
I think he is dead wrong.

Thats what my thoughts were as well. I see it as a safety device if anything. Thanks for the replies though. The bad part is the reply email I recieved from ODNR, they pretty much didn't know either. lol
I use a Garmin GPS when I am out g-hog hunting here in Ohio and no one has ever said anything to me. I have a Garmin 350 Niuvi in my truck and I have a little blue Garmin handheld model that I use to make the g-hog whole's around the farm's I hunt on. We also use the GPS alot on are trips out west prairie dog/ coyote hunting........ they really help to get you out of spots if you forget the way out of some places out there plus they will get you right back in them spots the next morning. I couldn't live with out one now days.

I'm confused, the ODNR did not know  That strange. There's nothing illegal about them I'm aware of. Saved my butt many a time in the big woods...

I apologize for the delay in responding to your e-mail. I was trying to confirm what I thought the answer to question would be with someone in law enforcement but have been unsuccessful in contacting anyone (here at central office). What I would suggest is that your contact the wildlife officer for your county or the district office for your county. Here is a listing of the district offices.
I would assume that they are legal. I'm going to call my local officer and see what he says just to make sure. Yeah I'm looking to hunt alot of new spots this year and I figured I'll let it remember my way back out of the woods instead of me trying to. I bought the Garmin etrex vista.
Thanks to everyone who has responded with what I thought the answer was.
