as it says under my name, somewhere on the water, but now and then i take a trip to reynodsburg to check in with the wife:D ;)
I am in Sidney, Ohio that is just about 50 miles north of Dayton if you know where that is.
Hey Rick I worked at Wilson Memorial Hosp last spring and part of the summer as a travlling Nurse. I know where Sidney is.
Mal
I am happy to see some one knows where Sidney is.
So what kind of hunting do you do?
I hunt mostly Whitetail, I did get to go to Canada and hunt Black Bear this last Aug. I didn't see any while hunting, but I saw lots of deer, a wolf, and lots of coon. I do like to hunt rabbit and squirrle also.
I like to go black bear hunting some day but I have to talk my shooting buddy in to it.
I do love to groundhog and coyote hunt here in my area, so far this year I have got 12 coyotes and and 106 groundhogs. I also go myself in to the 1000yd downrange club this year in South Dakota. I shot a prairie dog with my 22-250 at 1248yds it was a blast.
I have a photo of my shot I took in South Dakota if you like to see it just let me know and I will e-mail it to you.
sure I'd like to see the pic. I have never been coyote hunting. As a matter of fact I never even seen one hunting. the only time I have ever seen them was when I was unarmed. I think it would be a blast to hunt them. Do you use calls to bring them in or what do you do?
I don't do any calling I use bait!
I got on the list for road kills in this area and when they can't find anyone that want one they call me so I get alot of tham. I also use a dry dog food or cat food will work, but the key to doing it that way is once you start it don't stop. IT took me about two weeks to get it going here but it works and one thing nice about it you don't have to go out at night to do any calling. I have got must of my coyotes around 6:00am to 1:00pm in the morning.
Hay Mal if you ever get the time to get out to South Dakota to PD hunt its a real blast.
Me and my shooting buddy are starting to plan are next trip out PD hunting.
sounds like fun. Man you sure don't have any trouble getting bait then that is for sure when I was working in Sidney I saw road kill deer a couple times a week, and that was just travling from Sidney to Wapak.
I get so any from the game officer when he can't get a hold of me that he knows right where to take tham for me.
So what did you think of the photo I sent you?
You are the man there are not too many people around that could make a shot like that.

So what kind of varmint hunting do you do?
Two Tales
12-18-2002, 08:41 AM
Rick, I hunt anything that there is a season for but mostly what I can eat. Chucks, fox, coys, Chucks being my favorite as far as varmet go. Grew up hunting the tracks and open fields. I try to get back there each year but don't always get to hunt. Sometimes just go to hang around the Auction barn in Degraf my Uncle owns, it's been in the family for years.

I got 106 groundhogs and 12 coyotes up here in my area plus I take trips to South Dakota to hunt prairie dogs and I can tell you this thats a blast.
I made a shot last July 4th in SD that got me in the 1000yd down range club with the Varmint Hunters Association. The shot I took was 1248yds killing a PD now this come year I am hopping to go for the 2000yd range when we get out there.

Rick,
Not a big varmint shooter but I'll plug every 'yote I see! There is a new sportsman group in my neck of the woods that has been organizing Coyote hunt contests. They just started last year but have 4-5 weekend contests for this year. I'll probably join them after bird season is done in IN (Jan15).

Hey Hillbilly Sportsman: Ever head over to the "puppy track" there in cross lanes? Hehehe I lost a few bucks (this kind $$$$$, not the ones we hunt) there in my time!
If any of you Bass fishing dudes ever head down to Southen Ohio for a tourny, let me know and I can "fill you in" on where to catch them, I gave up my bass boat a few years back when I started playing college golf and have been outta fishing for some time. Won the "Team" Ohio Federation tourny a few years back, and I'll tell ya my honey holes on the river and in some of the lakes.

Well now I kinda take offense to that statement (city trash), and coming from a moderator it isn't flattering your image any. I don't believe I condemed Minford in such a way, I knew plenty of folks from that area and they are for the most part good hardworking god fearing people just like Sciotoville. I will admit Sciotoville has changed since I grew up there (50 thru 67), but so has Minford and not always for the better. But to call someone city trash without knowing them is putting the cart before the horse. Wow I defended this country and fought in wars to keep the American dream alive, and I'm just city trash. Hmmm that gives me a new perspective on life.
Bucktail ddo you actually look for reasons to be offended. Your starting to remind me of Jesse Jackson. LOL

desperado,i've found some artifacts, nothing of any real value though.
from the military i've found a brass chevron, and a brass belt buckle.
the weirdest things i've dug up were 2 chinese coins that date back to the mid 1700's.how they ended up here is a mystery to me though.
funny thing though, even though this area is right in the middle of indian country i've only found 2 arrow heads in about 15 years.

I just found an atal-atal flint tip the other day g'hoggen, right in a cow path in great shape. Plinky is putting it on a arrow & fletching it so I can give to my farmer that I found it on. He said it is worth about $50

Believe it or not Desperado the Minford (Aintry Co) area is rich in tradition when it comes to finding arrowheads and stuff, I know quite a few places that hold these treasures. I used to collect them when I was a kid growing up, and my collection has been lost to time and moving in the first 20 years of my career with the Army. I wish I still had them, also the Scioto River bottoms in the Portsmouth area is also a good place to hunt if the landowners will let ya. :)

Yep, my Step Momma owned that place; ran it for years. My Ex-Step Brother Ron owns "The Barn" now, back down the street at that corner where the original house is. I graduated in 67 as well from Glouster HS. I did attend school there on The Plains for about a half year probably in 62 or 63. Do you know the Thompsons, Bolens, or Grahms?

Yes. I've kind of lost track of the Thompsons since Dad and she divorced and Dad passed away now five years ago. Up to then we did manage to visit occasionally. Last I saw her she was in Hickory Creek recovering fromsomething or the other. Been at least five years and more than that since I've seen Ron. Ron had just joined the Army when Dad and Beulah were married so I didn't get to know him too well. But hey, nice that it is a small world. :D Let's get together and pop some caps at some critters sometime and bad mouth everybody we knew that don't show up! ;)

Well now let me see, it was several years before graduation that I attended there, but I do remember McCallister, bolen and Linscott. To be honest, your name rings a bell also. The Grahms I was thinking of were Francis and Jim. Francis ran the Pepsi plant in Athens for a while and Jim graduated, went to work with the FBI, then the Army. They are both in Louisiana now. I speak with Jim often. Seems to me I attended part of the year duing the 4th or 5th grade. The Grahms I'm speaking of; well Francis built a new home there in 64 or 65. I think Dad and Julia were married in 65 or 67 and it lasted for less than two years.

Duffy, did you do any ice fishing at Presque Isle when you lived in Erie? We went last year and have been biting at the bit to get back there. Great fishery.

Are you kidding?! I practically LIVED on the Peninsula fishing year-round, from the lagoons and the bay in spring and summer, to ice fishing the bay, Misery Bay, Horseshoe Pond, and all over in the winter. (Fall was spent in the creeks along the Lake Erie shoreline!)
Nothing beats Presque Isle. It is a grand fishery.

You're right. We need a good long cold snap, and we should be good to go at Erie.
