I learned to hunt pretty much on my own. You may have to distance yourself from your wife and let her learn and develop as a hunter on her own. If she's really serious about wanting to hunt, she'll be be motivated enough to seek help and guidance from other sources.

I didn't have anyone around to teach me to hunt, and I do alright. But I admit it would've been great having someone there that knew what was going on some of the time. Heck there are still times now that I still wish there were someone that would've shown me about it, now that I am trying to teach my sons. That is why I am so glad that I found this board of knowledgeble people, the people here are the ones that I never had to teach me. Just try to do your best, even if you get a littl frustrated from time to time, I can say it would still mean the world to them if you are there for them, even if they do test your patients. I know I wouldhave cherished time with someone close to me teaching me how, or even just giving me a few pointers from time to time about certain things.

Hey nightowl40 its not all about the kill or about misssing that big buck. ITs about going out and having fun so be patience.
I would love to take my wife or my daughter's out hunting with me but they are just not interested in hunting.
I do take my two daughter's out to the range from time to time to shoot hand guns and they really like that. My wife tells me its a father daughter's time.
I just can't wait till the time comes to take the grand daughter out shooting or my soon to be grand son. ..... The grand son is do some time in March.

So hey just leave your hunting stuff at home and take your wife hunting stuff out and be patience with her ......... you could found out it could be a lot of fun for you and her.

We took a 12 year old boy out to South Dakota with us last year prairie dog hunting and it was his first trip doing this and I can say we had a blast showing him how to shoot and hunt. He shoot way more than all of us did.
I am looking forward to him and his dad going out with us in June again.

Set up a double tree stand, get your video camera and take her out and film you. Learn as she films.

Are there any kids you know that hunt? I met my husband and children 5 years ago, his kids were much more patient with me and understanding of fears since they were smaller like me. Best of luck!

there was a lady hunter who i just gave advice to on where to get clothing ,she stated in here post they have a club.i am teaching my girlfriend to hunt also .give her books to read on the animals she is going to persue .understanding the animal and its habits and habitat is going to give her a better idea of what you are trying to teach her and why.dont just put her in a stand and say watch for a deer ,take her scouting with you ,let her know what your looking for and what it means ,basic woodsman skills are handy .look into odnr they have classes also your metroparks systems offer alot of classes too ,good luck to you both

Start With The Right Eq. For Her Something That Fits Her And That She Also Can Grow Into.take Her To A Pro Shop And Get Her Bow There And They Will Teach Her The Basics And Maybe Find Some Other Ladie Shooters.and Then Both Of You Can Teach Your Daughter.

nightowl40 made one post over a month ago and asked for advice. Everyone that posted offered some good advice. Evidently, he found something that worked :)

I hunt with my son (11yrs) and call my brother alot. My dad was a hunter, though I don't ask him much. He thinks its a joke with me hunting. I also lease my farm to 3 men from North Carolina, who give me alot of help. I don't hunt with them, I'm not sure why. I do my hunting when they leave. For great women's clothing I go to Cabela's. The under armor for women is my favorite; the boys size 16 hunting gear fits best, and is cheaaper than the adults. As of this last season, I'm perfect for the cold weather. There are many women's sport magazines, which sells women's clothing. Have fun hunting, I do and get lots of exercise.

I am so fortunate that my husband (who was then my boyfriend), was patient enough to help me learn to hunt. I always wanted to since I have always loved anything to do with the outdoor life. He first taught me to use the crossbow, andI was so interested in the compound we bought one. He showed me all the parts and info on deer hunting. We shot targets for a whole summer and I learned with ease. I had taken the hunter safety course in Georgia back in '88 but my ex never wanted to teach me or have me in the woods..soooo..it took a GREAT man with a big heart to teach me..thank god I learn fast and easy..but the interest was all it took. I have had the wonderful expereince of getting 3 bucks so far! Last years was a nice 12 point! And I owe him a great deal for helping me. I absolutely am addicted to BOW HUNTING!!! I have been sitting alone now for 4 years and have much confidence in what he has taught me! Help her learn and you will reap the rewards!!

The Ohio Division of Wildlife web site has a section for Getting Started in Hunting and Traping and under that a section of Ohio Women in the Outdoors where women can take class on hunting and shooting and etc. :mischeif:

The Division of Wildlife puts on a great weekend every fall. This year they had over 110 women attend the event. Women are the fastest growing segment of hunters/fishers in the US. Some even completed hunter education during the weekend. The Division of Wildlife wants to help every woman achieve her goal in the outdoors. Some of the women had never fished prior to this weekend. If they took a class on fishing they left with a fishing pole and tackle. Making them ready to pursuit a new sport. Some want to buy bows or guns after taking classes.

I've attended several Becoming an Outdoors Woman in Ohio weekends. Its amazing the number of women who have been held back in pursuing outdoor activities by the men in their lives. Several women told me there ex-spouse or boyfriend did not approve of outdoor activities. Some even lied about where they would be this weekend. Afraid of what the man in there life would think.

I've been fortunate that my parents had me camping and hiking at an early age. Then I continued to hike, camp and backpack. My husband and I hike, camp, fish and hunt together.

I've been asked to assist next year at the Women in the Outdoors event. Helping others learn to fish.

The ODNR website is to have photos from this years event added soon. They have a video from 2007 on the site now.
