Hey all. This is my second year of attempting to get a buck in Ohio with my Nonresident license. I had a few really good days last year but did not connect. I am bowhunting once again and so far I have hunted Dorset and the Pymatuning Lake area near Andover.

Honestly though, the areas arn't all that great. Pymatuning is too small and was pretty crowded. As for Dorset, man that is a big swampy thick piece of land. I have yet to see many deer in there. The land is all the same age growth pretty much (land visibility is no more than 20 yards for the most part.

I was thinking of trying the Mosquito Lake area in Trumble county.
Can anyone offer me any pointers on this public land, or heck even on those properties that I already tried?

I really enjoy buckhunting with a bow, and I am bummed cause I bagged out so early in Pa again. I hate being out of the game.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Most of those areas are hit pretty hard later in the season, if I were you I'd try to go a little farther south, in about an hour or less you could be in some better areas to see deer, Highland town, brush creek offer some very good hunting, especially with muzzleloader comming up in a couple weeks. Just my .02 worth. good luck.

You need to check out Grand River and Mosquito areas. They are the best around. You must wear boots though. Go to ODNR sites and look around for some good info. If you are at Pymatuning go to the north end of the lake and check the island area that has to be gotten to from the Pa side. Very north end. Also Auburn area has some of the best archery only hunting.

I have hunted just about all of the public land in northeastern OH. If you want some pointers, send me a PM, and let me know where home base is, and how far you are willing to travel. I saw samoe monster bucks this year on public land that I suspect is close to home for you.

HunterMag, Thanks for the heads up.
I went to Mosquito lake and I liked what I saw. No deer sightings, but the gun season had ended only a week before. I did see a lot of sign and they really tore up the acorns in one section of woods.

As for the North end of Pymatuning. I don't know how to access it without a boat, and I really dont think there is an island that is in the Ohio public land at that end. Did you mean a Peninsula instead? I will have to check out the Auburn area now.

trkyslyr, I sent you a PM.

Thanks all

I like Mosquito. I have a spot off SR 88 that has a good pinch point on it. I hunted it twice over the years and have brought home 2 does and a 130" buck. Trick is be on post at 5 am to reserve your spot.
