I have been hunting with a Hoyt Vortec since the '01 season. The string and cables seem to be in good shape. I keep the string waxed and have probable less than 1000 shots on the Bow. I have been using my recurve for the most part but I have dug the SPEED DEMON back out. I was told years ago that I should change cables every other string change. How often do you guys change your strings & cables on your hunting compounds.

I went through 3 string changes on my old Darton compound and never changed any cables. Don't think I ever had a "problem". Of course, I don't shoot competition or even everyday so I'm sure that has a bearing on cable life. My newer cp is only on the second season, same string as it was set up with. I don't shoot it much anymore either. I started shooting recurve and that is what I now "practice" with and it don't have any cables ;) :) I'll have to ask that question next time I'm at the archery shop, see what my local guy says.

Muzzy, I think you are relatively close to the Fin, or Sportsman's Den, have one their guys take a look at it for you. Better safe than sorry.

I usually shoot a good bit also, If it was me i would probablly have to changed and put some good aftermarket strings on it, your string may have alot more wear than what you think, but the wax is covering it up/holding ti together...better safe than sorry...

Big H,

You are correct. I live about 5 miles from the Fin. I need to paper tune it anyway so I will have them check it out. Thanks for the advice to all who replied!!

Vaportrail makes a very good string..... I usually get around 5000 shots b4 I change a string.. even before it looks like it needs it. I usally go through usually 1-2 sets a year... depending on the amount of tournaments I enter.

I bought a new string and cables for my Switchback before I ever even shot it. I bought a 452x string from Mike at H&M Bowstrings. H&M Bowstrings (http://www.hmbowstrings.com/index.html) I am very satisfied with how the string held up after 1,500 shots over the summer. I have kept it waxed and I figure I got two more seasons in it. If you are looking for a good deal, call Mike. I paid $42 for string and cables and had them in a week. Basically no string stretch with the 452x and the peep rotation stays true shot after shot. Compare that to the overrated Winners Choice at $100+.

Winners Choice. I used to go through three to four sets of Zebra strings a year. I have been shooting one set of Winners Choice for over five years now. They are awesome!..........and I shoot a lot.

Muzzy,
I know your close to the Fin, but if you are willing to drive down to St Rt 39 just outside Lucas you will find far better service at D&D Archery... They specialize in Bowtech, but they can get in anything under the sun for ya... If you are interested and need directions just pm me...

Thanks
