Fishing the Vermilion

I am headed to Detroit on December 10th, taking an Arson Update Class untill the 13th. I figure Detroit puts me three hours closer to some Ohio Steelhead. I plan on stripping streamers, teh 14th and 15th.

Any input on what I need to tie would be greatly apprecaited as well as maybe a couple hints on where I should start.

Here's a list I just gave a I guy I know who's looking to hit the V' this weekend. It's a little generic but most of the Erie tribs seem to catch fish on about the same stuff stream to stream with a few exceptions of some additional flies.


If the waters turn out to be clear, think smaller. Small stone or prince nymphs in 12-16 range, Sucker spawn and Crystal meth in #12-#16 range(orange, white, pink, chart.). small single egg patterns. You can use buggers but I'd gown to a #10 or #12. Mysis shrimp in a #14. I know guys that go all the way down to #18 but I think it's overkill.
If you've got some color you can go all the way up to #8's on buggers and add in ESL's. I still wouldn't go any bigger than #10's on the eggs and sucker spawn though. Same nymphs but up through an #8 is good. You may even want to try some stones with an egg tied in at the head or thorax.

I can't add much for an access point because I've not fished there yet. The reason I can confortably tell you about the fly selection is because one of the guys I sell to fishes there occasionally and he has equal luck there with them as the other tribs. :)
