I got a little bored today. SO I strung up my recurve and shot a few arrows; heres my best group from 10 yards. My other groups wweren't too awlful bad. I still don't know if its good enough to take out hunting though. If it were 20 yards I'd feel more confidant? I was wondering if 10 yards is enough or do you think keep working til I get 20 yards dialed in?

Looks good, but I always practice at 30 yards.

(BTW, good luck on your apparent flooring installation!)

Good at 10...you should be able to duplicate it at fifteen with a bit more practice then you'll be good to go;) Tuffest part is placing your treestand in the perfect spot for a 10yd shot without being detected:yikes: A little easier at 15-20yds.

Keep at it and by this time next year you'll be shooting 25 or 30 yards!!

If I read you right, you don't want to drive anywhere to practice your shooting at more than 10 yards...to answer your question, I don't think that's enough. You are limiting yourself tremendously. You need to extend your range to 15 to 20 to have a decent chance. jmho.

No its NOT that I dont want to drive, its just happens to be quickest when i just need to do some shooting. I usaully take my recurve wit me to the property i hunt so i can wing a few.
And right now 10 to bout 12 yards is my limit in accuracy.

We all have limitations. When I practice, I start at 10 to 12 yards and warm up. I then move to 15 and continue shooting. I am pretty confident there. I have moved out to 20 now... I guess what I'm saying is it's small steps at a time. I feel if I get in the kill ring at 20 yards consistently, I can go hunting with my recurve.

Yea I understand, I think it would be best to hold off and get atleast 20 dialed in. Hopefully I'll be set for next year? I am thinkin bout takin it out for bunnies or squirrels though; probably gimme some good practice. Along with some great fun and hopefully a few for the pot.

dont give in buddy , get out there and shoot a deer at 10 yards . i have killed several at 10 and under from the ground . kinda exciting when you can here them breath . its alot easier to kill deer at 20 yards than at 10 . just remember , if you aint a good shot , you got to be a good sneeker . hoot

I've only killed six animals with my recurve and three of them were under ten yards.

hunting with an old school bow and arrow . just ain the same as any other method . with a slug gun . people buy sabot slugs and rifled barrels , to shoot farther , like muzzleloaders , the inlines , primative hunting ,, you gotta be kiddin me . they are like shooting a big bore high powerd rifle , not much skill needed to kill deer with these instrament of destruction , hell all you got to do is put the cross haires on the deer and , its over . you dont have to be a deer hunter anymore to kill deer .you just need to be a good shot . its no longer how close you can get , its about how far you can shoot . when some one showes me all the pictures of his big buck taken by his trail camera , the instrament that does all the scouting for him . then he knows he needs to be there wednesday morning in the tree between 8 and 9:30 to get a shot at this buck . well im not impressed . let him get on the ground , with a stick and wooden arrows , and kill a 2.5 year old doe , with in 15 yards , then i will be impressed . the compound bows are the same . striving to shoot as far as possable . i went to tar hollow this year , there was a man standing out back , at about 22 yards , ( thats what he said) , shooting his matthews bow , left handed . he said it wasnt shooting rite , he was having trouble getting the arrows in the kill area . i asked him if i could shoot it , he said sure , but its left handed . i said i didnt care , he said since its so short i have to shoot the release , cant get off the string well ernough , well i shot this bow , left handed ,no release. only shot two arrows left handed befor in my life, i picked up this bow , my first arrow was in the neck , the next 5 was all in the lungs . didnt seem to shoot to bad for me , the next arrows were all in the lungs , and really tightened up. i can understand why some of you guys are killing deer at 40 yards or better . im not saying this is wrong , all im saying is seems nobody tries to be a hunter . nobody goes out spends long days scouting anymore , i do know what im talking about , i have killed deer with a compound , i have killed deer with an inline fifle , and also killed deer with a riffled barrel slug gun . so some day try to get out and be a deer hunter , not just a deer killer
ok boys ,, slam away. hoot

i agree hoot...you know that...and i will be out there monday with my scoped in line muzz...a kill will not be the same to me as one would be with a recurve or longbow...and i can say nothin would too...been there done it as many others have...they know how we feel...but also young hunters as any young worker do things much different than us older guys...theres a new type of hunter...this is how deer huntin is done now...we're just ole dummies doin it the hard way...:Dbut its how i prefer to do it...an its the way i've always done it in general...but every 3-5 yrs,igo gun huntin...

got to agree with you, seems like people are more interested in how fast and how many deer they can get and they seem to forget what hunting is all about. Like you said they are deer killers not deer hunters.

I know what ya mean hoot... I have harvested whitetail with rifle, shotgun and compound. My shots with the compound bow have all been inside 30 yards, not that I couldn't shoot further but I believe what bowhunting is all about, is getting them close and "hearing them breathe". Too many things can happen to an arrow at the longer distances and like I said, I don't bowhunt to kill deer at 50 yards.

I think I have learned that, now it's time to take the training wheels off Lot's of time left to "bowhunt" this season and I'm hoping one of these finds its mark. Good luck!
