Anyone here ever seriously look into hunting in Africa.
I never really had a desire to do it until rescently.
It looks like it would be alot of fun, but REALY expensive. I just can't imagine spening close to $15,000 to go hunting....

I saw this in the paper and thought it would be appropiate for the thread.
I have never had the opportunity to go to Africa but I think it would be a trip of a lifetime to experience stalking some ultimate predators. In the jungle your the bottom of the food chain.

I've wanted to go to Africa ever since I was little. I watched all the Tarzan movies I could, infact I even perfected the Tarzan call & got to use my voice in a TV commercial. National Geographic Maps hung on my bedroom wall w/ pic's of the "Big 5" & the other plains game. I think the Greater Kudu is one of two of the most beautiful animals that God ever created. Oh how I would love to have a full size mount of a trophy Kudu. I've even tryed to learn some Swahili. I got about 10 words. Then I found out that Swahili isn't the main language.
I have a step-daughter in Uganda right now that's on a missions trip w/ ORU. She called the other day @ 5:30 AM, 12:30 PM their time.(7 hr. difference) She said it's beautiful over there.
The Varminter Hunter Magazine has had several articles on hunting in Africa. The last issue 2 brothers went over for about $10,000 a piece & shot several different plains game.
FYI there is 27 different animals classified as varmints including Baboons & in some places leopards.
Yeah , I'd like to go too! :D
I some times think I like to go over to Africa for a big game hunt but what holds me back from go is the cost to do it.
My buddy and I are going over to Australia in 2004 for a Australian varmint hunt for Kangaroo's in the bush.
The cost for us to do this is are way over and back plus the license and ammo.
How we could keep the cost down is we got to be good friends with a guy on a varmint wedsite from over there.
He told us he would let us use his rifles and put us up in his home the time we are there plus take us out and show us how to do it if we would do the same thing for him in 2005 if he come over here and we take him prairie dog shooting in South Dakota.
So that the deal !
Why we are using his rifles is that to get are rifles over there is a load of paper work that needs to be done before are trip so he told us we could just use his 223's.
Well I just wanted to let you know what I am doing in 2004 for a big game hunt but for now I am heading out to the reloading bench to load more ammo to get really for my trip in 4 weeks to South Dakota to shot prairie dogs.
I am hopping to make a 1500yds or maybe 2000yd shot this year so I can move up for the 1000yd downrange club to less the 1500yd club with the VHA club.
Talk to you later.

Would love to hunt Africa someday, but my first stop will be the arctic for some "CARIBOU",but i agree it is expensive.
I also wanted to CARIBOU hunt some day but when I called about booking a hunt wanted me to see a VCR tape first and it turn me off on it.
IT was big bucks and after seeing the tape it look to be about like going out and shooting a farmer cowI am sorry to say.
There was a guy from are gun club that tried it and he also tells me to save my money.

i think i will want to elk hunt again after this year,i jus know its gonna be that good.i would like to tackle moose sometimes soon an yes caribou an antelope too.
Along with the trip to Australia in 2004 I got myself hook on long long range shooting.
I am heading out the South Dakota in 4 weeks for 2 to 3 weeks of long range shooting and some prairie dog shooting.
I got my name in the VHA mag for the downrange club two time in the last two year, one time for a 556yd shot killing two PD's with one shot and the other time for a 1248yd shot killing one PD.
Now this year I am working to get 1500yds then if I have time try for 2000yd.
Last year when I made that 1248yd shot the weather was sunny and 116* in the sun by noon and it was July 4th.
Well I got to get back out to the reloading bench so I will talk to you later.

Shooting an animal the size of a goper at 1200 + yards is quite a feet. That's pretty cool. :)
TF
Yes it is !
That photo one the side of me is my last years shot.
The rifle is a Ruger M77VT 22-250 with a Leupold 8.5x25x50mm scope on it, the bullets I used was 55gr V-Max Moly coated.
This year I am hopping that my AR50 makes it way here in time but if not the 22-250 will make the 1500yd shot on that small target.

I'm not sure I would want to kill some of the animals they kill on safari...I like bowhunting for deer, its good enough for me!

Lureboy98: if Thunderflight came to your house & said "Hey, I won the lottery I want you to go on safari w/me, but it will be during deer season." What are you going to say to this possible once in a lifetime chance?

Retirement ain't all bad. I have done a lot of things after I retired that I only thought about before I retired.
I have also hunted and fished a lot more after I retired. I just go a little slower.
