So who here is either taking a youth out this weekend or is participating as a youth hunter?

I don't have any kids so I had to "borrow" one from a friend of mine. ;) I was with this young man two years ago when he shot his first turkey. That was fun! He was hunting with other friends a couple years ago when he took a huge mature 8 point for his first deer. That was cool too. We will be going out Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning (hope he gets a chance at a nice big doe because our farm needs to get rid of some deer). I am so excited that I can hardly stand it and I won't even be carrying a gun. :D

Good luck to everyone!!!!!!!!!!

I will be heading out with my oldest boy the entire week-end searching for his first racked buck. I have several scouted out for him and with the cooler temps it should be a great week-end with plenty of deer movement. Good luck to those others heading out!

I will be in the woods with my 11 year old daughter. We will be trying to get her first. She hunted with me a few times last year with the crossbow, but the right shot never presented itself. She will be using a customized H & R 20gauge, that I fixed up for her with some input from Jeff Goebel from this website.

I'll have my 9 yoa boy out. His 2nd year and he missed twice last year. He'll be using a Mossberg 500, 410ga with slug sights. Would love to find one of those Rossi Miniloaders for him at a decent price.

My brother and I are taking my 11 yr. old nephew on his first deer hunt. He has been shooting his 20 gauge since the summer in anticipation and he is really good out to 75 yards.

I'll bow hunt when not with my nephew and when I sit with him my brother will bow hunt so it works out great.

I set up a ground blind I made from pine limbs, etc. large enough for 2 chairs and hidden well enough to hide some movement. I also hand picked the spot because he won't be able to shoot more than around 40 yards or so & that will keep his first shot at a good kill range. He will be shooting at any deer he sees - his choice.

I can't wait until my son is old enough to take him along too - it is more fun for me to watch a person get their first deer (especially a kid) than to take one myself anymore! Kids get soooooooo excited - it is great to see.

I don't have any young ones to take for the youth season. I am not going bow hunting this weekend, & will stay out of the woods and give them their space. Good luck to all the youth that will be out this weekend.

I plan on bowhunting this weekend and hopefully will have 107 acres to myself since I will be hunting on my own property in Vinton County. The past 2 years I went down during this time and I always end up having to run someone off, typically the same boy and father. It's a shame. Should be a good weekend with the cold weather and people out hunting. Should see lots of deer movement. I hunted last weekend and 2 of us saw 7 deer (3 bucks), no big boys though.

My 15yr old son and I will be out.

He's only been at it a few years (this will be his third). He got a long shot last year but missed. He handled his 870 express like a pro during Pheasant season - much better than in years past.

I'm going to set him up near my stand I've been bowhunting. I've seen nothing but bucks out of that stand and took a 7pt three weeks ago. Had a fork, spike, and a nice 8pt slide though last Saturday PM.

Good luck to all and let's keep them safe.

So, do we have to wear an orange vest this weekend if we are bowhunting?
I'm going to be 20 ft up in a tree, on private land, I don't think I'll need orange. I'll wear an orange vest out of the woods while walking if we have to, but I hope we don't have to wear orange when bowhunting. The rule book states that you have to wear orange vest or jacket

Yes you do. I wore mine in last year and hung it behind me head in the stand. We never see the GW so I wasn't worried about if that was legal or not. I figured that was good enough.

I will be out too. Along with the two younger brothers (14 & 11) and younger cousin (10) My dad grandpa and uncle are going too. This will be my last youth hunting of my life so i plan on making it a good one. I've taken 2 deer the last two youth hunts and i'm hunting for antlers in this one. We will be down in Monroe County for the whole weekend. Good luck to all youth and bowhunters this weekend. These colder temps should be nice.

No youngsters to take, so I'm going out with the bow. One of the reasons is to keep others off of our lease.

That's the reason I am going down to keep the little rascals off the farm. If a buck walks by it will just be a bonus.

Yes I was and back then they didn't have a youth season. I had to hunt with the big boys and did good I might add taking a 150" deer when I was only 16 years old. I also obeyed the laws and other peoples property. I have no problem telling a kid and his dad to get off the family farm. I've done it before and I will do it again. We bought it for the family to hunt on, not our neighbors and their guests. 99% of the people going out will obey the laws, but there's a few who don't. And I have a couple around me who tend to get "lost":coco: Nothing against the youth hunt, I just don't like them hunting on my property when they do not have permission.

No, actually you DO have to wear orange regardless of where you are hunting, bow hunting, squirrell hunting, anything hunting during youth gun season, gun season, and muzzleloader season.

The DNR has added pictures of successful youth hunts (all are successful really).

Theres one picture of a head shot kill on a doe that in my opinion should not be in there. I can stomach it and so can most of everyone here, but I just don't see the point in showing it. Anyway here is a link to the start of all the photos.

Took my son to Johnson's Woods for a controlled youth hunt last weekend. Saw lots of deer in the AM but it didn't take long to spook them all off the property. DNR said that a herd of 27 jumped the road in front of them just before lunch. I hope they let the youth hunters on there again as I don't think they harvested as many deer as they wanted to.
