Around in southern Ohio the stagnant water has been killing many deer. How do I know it is the water? No animals will drink it because of the drought, and all the streams water is black, and all the fish that were in the 'main' streams are dead. The main creek of the are isn't even running, and the water is just black.

I, after an hour walk in the woods found 3 dead deer, one a extremely nice 9 point that had at least a 20 inch spread. I would have grabbed it had it not stunk so bad. I will be going back with a mask and will get it cleaned and such.

*On a side note, how has the rut been throughout the state? I went out on Thursday and Friday to where I hunt in S. Ohio (Morgan County, I live in Lucas County) and saw 27 deer while driving around .. 10 werew bucks .. 8 were larger then 8 points. One would have easily scored over 170. On the property I hunt there was a 150 class buck about 80 yards, unfortunately I was loaning my brother my bleat, and I had no attractant scents.
My brother, however used a Adult Doe Estrus bleat, and had Trophy Leafs hanging. He bleated in a 4 point, and it came charging at his stand until it stopped to start sniffing the trophy leafs!(Yes, he shot it. We hunt for the meat, not the size of the rack)

That is just the thing, it isn't EHD. It is the water. I have seen what EHD can do, and I know that the fever is there, but it is the water. Nothing will drink it.

Knats that are down in the water will fly up the deers' nose and get to the brain and they die. It isn't the fever, I have talked to the many people about it, and even 3 of the DNR people I talked to said it was the water, not EHD.

If they're not drinking the water then how is it killing them ?

Doesn't make much sense to me.

The EHD deer are normally found near water, be it stagnant or not.

It is the water they call it the Blue tongue. The deer get it from stagnet water and a bug like a nat kinda flies up in there nose. It eventually will sufficate them over a period of time they go to water because of the fever the get from it. I hunted in zanesville and thats what they told us. The bugs in the stagnet water is what causes it.
