I see that the soybeans around here are sprouting. It's almost time for me to load up the ol' .223 and protect those tender young plants from the nasty old groundhogs. :) :) :)
"plant soybeans, and they will come" ;)
Longrifle30.06
Do you have a lot of hog on your farm ?
I have ben working on groundhogs this spring on some farms down my way and I am running out of them.
I got 32 so far !

What's the length of the average shot?
That sounds like a lot of fun.
TF
350yds he give me a hard time so I hard to pull out the 22-250 to nail that one.
Right now I am getting ready to head to South Dakota in four weeks to do some long long range shooting on some prairie dogs.
Last year I got a prairie dog with the 22-250 at 1248yds, that got me in the down range club with the VHA.

I do not own a farm. I mostly hunt on public land around Deercreek reservoir. They have several fields that are leased seasonally to farmers that are legal to hunt. You can get a map of the public areas at Deercreek from the ODNR/DoW website, if you are interested.
Depending on the field hunted, shots range anywhere between 75 - 500+ yards. The longest shot I attempted last year was paced off later at 625 yards. I misjudged the distance and missed low, close enough to spray the hog with dirt and spook him. My hunting partner now has a laser range finder, so that won't happen again... ;)
Thinks for the info !
The trip out west this year I am hopping to make a prairie dog kill at 1500yds then maybe 2000yds.
When we get out there I have to take less two days to set the rifles up for that kind of shooting.
Kind of hard to make 1500yds shots here in Ohio.

I never thought about public land to hunt g'hogs on. I don't know if I would bother because it's easy enough to get permission to hunt farms.
Boy, I wish my hunt'n buddy would get a laser range finder. I'm getting tried of luggin my military range finder around. But if he did would he still make those 540yd shots..........hhmmmm.........:D

That's up to you & what you're using. I've ran'em down & hit'em in the head w/a hammer or Crecent wrench when out working in the fields to out to 385 measured yards. Or like Rick, if you can see it, shoot it.
You can use any hunting weapon you have to take g'hogs. Handguns, rimfires, shotguns(slug or shot), arrahs, rifles & of course tools. I've gotton them w/all the above except arrahs. I even got a couple w/a WWII bayonet that I got from my Grandpa. It was to dull to stab with so I wacked them with the handle. G'hogs have one of the toughest hides in the US of A. Some say the badger is tougher.
Yeah , for me it's a lot of fun!!!!!!! :D :D :D
That right vvarmitr !!!
I love it alot when I find a groundhog that out there thats what makes it so fun and that also why I go to South Dakota prairie dog shooting.
But I do shoot the ones that are 25yds or more to for the farmer's.

Hey Rick: Have you ever used a pistol or shotgun on g'hogs?
Yes !
I used a 44mag.
I also was down south 2 to 3 time wild pig hunting with a Ruger 44mag hand gun and I can say it a blast to do.

Hey I was out lastnight doing alittle groundhog hunting on a new farm and I got two more to add to my list so that 33 hogs.
I was hopping to be able to see some babys out but not lastnight I didn't see any.
I do know one thing the ticks are out !!!!
The groundhogs I shot lastnight must have had 1/2 dozen ticks on them and after I got home I found two on myself.
Hey you have a nice weekend and try to stay dry.
Talk to you later.

I have walked up on then while they were sleeping and shot them(only once though) I was leaving a field and seen one that I thought was dead laying there..so I was going to walk over and take a peek, I got within 4 or 5 feet and I began to see his eyes slowly open and he started to stretch, so the 223 got some easy work that day, my buddy get one with a 357 one time when he was foolish enough to come out and start walking around at the range.
The olny time I have ever walkup on one he was in a tree.
Smallie34
05-23-2003, 11:12 AM
I have seen a couple in trees as well, there curiosity seems to get them more than anything.
I also got one in the water this year and that was a first I have ever seen one simming.
Smallie34
05-23-2003, 12:04 PM
Thats one on me..I never have seen one swimming before.
Me to !
I had to look 2 to 3 time before taken him out.
vvarmitr
05-24-2003, 09:31 AM
Boy you got one on me too.
Now the tree thing is a little different. I've seen them in trees lots of times, mostly to get away from the dogs. I've never seen them much higher than 6' up.
That's one thing about g'hogs that is so cool. Some see you at 300yds & they're in the hole while others will walk right up to you. You just never know. That's one reason I like to carry a pistol w/me when I'm out. When the encounter is up close & personal & you can't focus it in the scope.
I seen them in the late morning after a belly full of beans & alfalfa crashed-out on their mounds soaking up the sunshine.(they generally don't wake-up) :D
Gotta go, I got a dog here that wants to hunt some g'hogs in the tall grass.
P.S. Hey Rick, that swimming g'hog didn't happen have a wide flat hairless tail, did it? :D
It was a groundhog and not what you are thinking.
I took a photo of it right after I pulled it out of the water now is I could get my scaner up and working I send you a photo of it.
vvarmitr
05-25-2003, 05:09 PM
That's cool you even got a picture of it.
Were you very far away when you shot it?
No !
I was just about 15 to 20 feet from it when I walk up on it in the creek.
vvarmitr
05-26-2003, 11:06 PM
Took the dog out to no avail. I was hoping that she could pick up a little one, but no such luck. :(
I gotta get the kennels built (there goes my gun $). While we were gone today, one of the neighborhood kids let my dog loose. When we pulled up to the garage we found the dog inside. The lady across the street put her in there because she was loose.
After talking to her we went & talked to the little culperit's grandmother. But she, g'ma, said the little girl would never do a thing like that. So I'm gonna have to get the kennels built so we can lock'em up when we leave. :p
My whole back yard is a kennels with locks do to we have a inground pool so my wife little Tibetan Terrier gets to run's all over.
I was going to do some groundhog hunting yesterday with a buddy from columbus that was going to come over but I had to go to my daughters house to put a new hot water heater in.
LUCKY ME !
She got home sunday night finding alot of water on the floor so I had to get up and go over a turn the water off for her.
Today I am hopping to get are pool open so I can have it ready to go for my wife so when I leave for South Dakota.
Well I talk to you later I have to get around.
vvarmitr
05-27-2003, 08:49 AM
Yeah, I've heard about your "LUCKY ME!" 2 trips to SD, A trip to Australia, & an AR50. I could go on & on. I guess in everyones life a little rain must fall. :D :D :D
I hope you have lots of ammo loaded cause if this weather breaks, farmers are gonna be puttin' down hay. The blue grass was in head yesterday. Not a good thing.
All the holes I seen yesterday were freshly cleaned out & some were holes I shot G'hogs out of this year. It's like someone dumped of a bunch of g'hogs. Wierd?
Thats why I am working today to open up are pool so I can have that part of it done then I can work on some more groundhogs when the hay fields are cut.
Sounds like rain off and on all week I here.
I have a boat load of ammo loaded here.
Try 10,000 rds !
8000rds go's on the SD trip the other could be used for trip 2 or groundhog hunting around here.
I hope to being some of that ammo home after are 3 weeks stay.
Well back to the pool !
vvarmitr
05-28-2003, 10:52 AM
I hope you don't bring any loaded ammo home if you know what I mean. ;) :D
Did you read about Neopolis & the coyote? That's wild!!!!
"Neopolis & the coyote" sounds like a Greek fable. heh, heh :D
I gotta get to bed, midnites this week. :(
No I haven't read that.
Why I take so much ammo is the area we are in there are no store with in 75 miles so I really don't want to run out.
I look at it this way you can always bring it home and put it back for the next trip out.
I don't have time for a nap today my soon to be son inlaw ask lastnight if I would take him out shooting hand guns today so I am getting around to leave.
Talk to you later.
vvarmitr
05-28-2003, 07:12 PM
Cool your getting a son-in-law that likes to shoot.
Bonehead, my son-in-law, is the only son I have. :( But he's a dandy. We hunt shoot & camp together as well as get into other trouble. Right now they are buying a house about 2mile right up the road. He just got a 220 Swift in a Ruger #1. We haven't done much with it with the house stuff going on.
I am happy to be getting a new son inlaw that like to shoot but he work alot. This week he is off so he had time today.
I took out after lunch today two of my long range rifles to let him shoot and I think he loved it so maybe some day me and him can take off for South Dakota prairie dog shooting.
He was asking alot about it today along with other things about shooting.
So I think he well work out ok !!
May other daughter come home with one I would have loved to used for a target but he is not around any more.
She told him to get lost.
Lucky Me !!!

I just got married again & you have an avialable daughter.
It could be you & me Papa going to SD. You & me shooting together, getting into the Down Range Club together, & having our pictures side by side in the TVHM Members Pictures. :D :D :D
Oh well what can I say? You are diffinatly Lucky! I would have probably used up most of your AR50 ammo just trying to hit something. :D
See ya later.
I told my wife and daughter before they started planning this wedding it was ok with me what ever they did but if they get in my money I have set back for my trips I would all upset with them and they don't want to go there.
So I am still in the clean to go !
I will keep you in mine for next years trip.
Why I say this is my buddy I go with out there with may not be going till late summer next year and I like to go again in June.

That sounds great. I hope I can do it. The only thing is late winter/early spring I may be going to Texas for a wild hog/ coyote/& maybe PD hunt. If I can pull the two off would be awesome. We'll have to talk more on this.
Man it's a good thing you put a limit on the wedding spending cause there is no end to what they can spend. My one brother-in-law told his daughter that she gets X amount of $ & anything over that you want you pay for. Calmed her down real quick! They still had a big beautiful wedding. I have no idea what other stuff she wanted? When Coyote Kate & I got married we rented a meeting room at the Hampton Inn, invited 50 quest, omitted gifts, & had covered dish w/us supplying meat & drinks. We were surprised at the amount of complememts we got. It wasn't real formal either, & I think people were more relaxed.
Gotta hit the sack, see ya later.
Yes we have to do some more talking about it this next winter.
I gone down to the Smoky Mts, in Tennessee about a dozen time wild hog hunting and I can say its a blast.
I love to wild hog hunt with a 44mag hand gun.
What kind of gun do you plan to use?
My daughter wedding right now is at $10,000 and I think it may go up maybe two more before it done.
I told them that there is a place down in the Smoky's that would do it for $29 bucks but they said no way on that.
I got some bad news yesterday the 50cal I had order not going to make it here in time for my trip so I am heading tomorrow up to Dundee, Michigan to Cabela's to look for one more 8.5x25x50mm long range Leupold scope for the 06 that I will be taking along on my SD trip this time so if I get the right day with very little wind I can make my 1500yd shot that I am wanting to do this time out.
I am wanting to move up from the 1000yd club to 1500yd this time out then maybe trip 2 I can do 2000yds with the 50cal.
Well I got a honey do list today so I better get on it or I will have to stay home tomorrow to do it so I will talk to you later.
I will be in and out today.

Yeah, we have some talking to do cause I never take trips. I have no idea how to prepare.
I'm planning on taking the 243 BLR & the 870 Super Mag. for coyote. For hogs I'm taking my limited edtion Ruger Bisley ss 5 1/2" barreled 45LC. My dream pistol come to life! :D & maybe Marlin lever gun in 35 Rem., & possibly too my single shot Competitor pistol in some wrist rippin wild cat caliber.  I've often thought about the 458 American, but then the 450 Marlin would be more available.
What do you have your '06 in?
gotta go talk to you tomrrow, I hope.
My 30/06 is a Ruger M77.
I got up this morning at 5:00am got ready and headed up to Dundee, Michigan to go to Cabela's. Now I can say thats a super nice store and it has ever thing you may need for hunting and fishing.
I was in that store for four hours and they had a load of go sales going on right now that you can't find in there catalog.
Well I go to run my wife wants to go eat so I will talk to you later.

05-31-2003, 08:28 PM
Boy you weren't kidding, Neapolis, when you said your location was Northwest Ohio. :)
Rick: Are you a Ruger fan er something? Or is it you just got good deals on them. I have or should I say we have one Ruger rifle, Coyote Kate's M77/22Hornet. It shoots to far right & I'm not sure what to do. I'm going to take the barrel off & put a 17Ackly Hornet barrel on it. If that doesn't help I'll wrap it around a tree, spend it back to Ruger tell'im to stick it where the sun don't shine & stick to making single action pistols because it's the only thing they seem to do right!
The older I get the more I become a Savage rifle fan! :p They have so much going for them.
Talk to you guys later.
Good Morning !
I am not going to say I am a Ruger fan but I do like Ruger.
After all my 22-250 Ruger M77VT put me in the 500yd club then the 1000yd downrange club for the last two years.
"Neapolis"
I am happy I don't live by that store or I would be back there today buying stuff.
My buddy and I are planning to stop at the Cabela's store in Mitchell, SD this year on the way out to White River, SD.
He didn't have time to go yesterday do to all the reloading he has to do before we leave on are first trip out to SD so that why we are stopping then.
I did see alot of good sales yesterday like on the 8.5x25x50mm long range Leupold I pickup yesterday for $800 that was about $75 off what I see them in there catalog.
Well I got to run talk to you guys later.
Neapolis
06-01-2003, 09:36 PM
They seem to have a collection of everything.
Everytime I go into the place I find something else I cann't live without.

06-01-2003, 09:55 PM
Man this just ain't fair, I haveta drool though the catolog & you guys get to drool directly on the stuff. :D But my day is coming when they open the one in Wheeling. :D That might be an hour drive? Is there much difference between the Cabela stores; does any one know?
Almost time to go to work. I'll see ya Tuesday because I switch to afternoons on Mondays. Plus I got one for "HERE'S A THOUGHT'' in "SOUND OFF - COMEDY" Bye!
Neapolis
Boy do I know what you are talking about.
They open doors at 8:00am and by 8:30 I had drop a $1000 bucks and I still wanted some more things but I turned round and left after telling myself I had got the main thing I went up after.
On my way home after leaving I called my buddy and I told him that when we stop at the Cabela's store in Mitchell, SD that he was not going to stay no more than a hour there before I am moving on we had prairie dogs to shoot. He told me ok !!!
Well I got to get around this morning I have a honey do list today before I can put this new scope on I got Saturday.
Talk to you guy later.
vvarmitr
06-03-2003, 09:54 AM
Hey Rick: that scope you got is it a Vari-X III, Target, or a Mark 4 Tactical? I just got a Graf & Sons catolog & the prices seem pretty good.
Boy I don't know about you Rick? Seems pretty cruel to me to let a guy only have a hour in Cabela's. :( :D I know , you're a man on a mission, but where is your humanity? :D
Is this weather ever goin to let up. There's hay to be made.
Talk to you later.
Yes its a Vari-X III 8.5x25x50 Mil-Dot.
That scope is very hard to find in Mil-Dot so thats why I got it.
I may take one more trip up before I leave for SD do to I should have got one more two rifle SKB case.
Your not making any hay today are you ?
IT raining here.
vvarmitr
06-03-2003, 01:57 PM
Vari-X III 6.5-20x50mm 3/4"mildot ............$700.00 I think this is the model #...LP52198. That's what they have it listed in Graf & Son catolog. That includes shipping. Is that a good price?
Hopefully my hay making days are done. I got plenty of that as kid! ;)
Thats not the right model !!!
I have 51606 with the side focus mil-dot that list price is right around or just over $900 bucks.
Graf & Son do they have a website or a 1- 800 number ?
Why I am asking I don't think I have seen that catalog.
vvarmitr
06-04-2003, 09:40 AM
www.grafs.com 1-800-531-2666
I'm pretty sure they advertize in the Varmint Hunters. I don't have a copy handy right now.
The LP51606 in the Graf cat'g is a Vari-X III 8.5-25x50mm Long Range Target Matte 30mm Tube Fine Duplex for $825.
Are you sure you got the Mil-Dot? I'm sure you picked it up & looked though it by now. Right?
Hey, check it out this is post #223 for me. :D Maybe it's a sign I should go get a 223 Rem. :D  Nah, I'm more in need of scopes, chronograph, & a laser range finder (even though I have one of those Barr & Stroud type that looks like a bazooka). However, I 'm keeping an eye out for a cheap 1100 12ga for Coyote Kate to camo' out for crow hunting.
Heading to the range, see ya later.

There is a place in PA that has good prices on scopes its called Ron Shirks Shooters Supply..I could get you the # if you like, D&R sports seems to have pretty good prices as well.
Yes its a mil-dot !
You can add a $100 bucks on top of that $850 for a mil-dot Leupold.
Thanks Smallie34
I have all the scopes I need right now.
Besides if I put out one more 1000 bucks before my trip my wife would tell me to pick it up and live out there.
I don't want to push it !!
Smallie34
06-04-2003, 10:15 AM
I know exactly what you mean:D ;)
Now if we didn't have to pay for my daughter wedding I would be ok with buying one more scope before I took off but like I said I really don't want to push my luck here.
vvarmitr
06-05-2003, 10:36 AM
Hey Smallie34: I'll take that # if ya got it. Thank you.
Rick are you saying that SD is okay to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there? :D
When I got home last nite the wife & step-daughter were waiting up for me. Said they had something to tell me. :(
Well, I gritted my teeth & waited for the worst. It seems they went hiking (they're always hiking), okay. When they got there & got out the dog took off like a streak. (I'm thinking they lost the dog) Anyways, here she took up the hill & nailed a g'hog. (phew!) They gave me the blow by blow ......well not blow by blow, more like bite by bite play. If they had gotten any more animated they would have been hopping, dodgen, & diving around the room. It was the first time they ever saw something like that. :D They were pretty excited. Then later on she got another one.
Now I have a question. Do I get to add them to my total? :D
Oh, by the way that Marlin 35Rem I thought about taking to Texas is diffinetly going with me. I just bought it yesterday.

I would love to live out west in the summer time but not at winter time. They get way to much snow for me !
Smallie34
I will keep you in mine when I get my new rifle I am having made for me.
Well guys back to the reloading bench.
vvarmitr
06-07-2003, 10:26 AM
To much snow? I have yet to get to much snow. Snow on the ground makes me want to get into the woods like a sunny summer day makes me want to be in a fresh cut hayfield.
Coyote Kate & her cub were waitin' up for me again last nite. :(
After our "hello smooch" CK says "guess what we did?" Well, I could smell wood smoke on her & knowing that we don't have a fireplace, fear started to grip me. I said "Catherine, I smell smoke" (I called her Catherine in an attempt to get control of a situation that maybe total mayhem.) She said "We started a fire in the fire ring & have roasted hotdogs & marshmellows. (phew!) But wait where did they get the wood? I knew of some old boards w/paint on them & some treated lumber scraps, the kinda stuff you should never use for a cooking fire, but no real firewood. Here the cub was cleaning out the ring & found some chunks of firewood. They didn't know how many Wall Street Journals they used to start the fire, but it was glowing when I got home. He he he you know that wood had to be damp. :D Talk about tenacity! :D
I gotta go.
I like the snow when I was working but any more I really don't have to have it.
But one good thing about bad weather I can get going on all of my reloading I need to do for the summer to be ready for long range shooting and prairie dog shooting.
I really don't do alot of hunting in ohio any more do to the farmer will not let you on there land to hunt deer or anything so thats why I got in to long range shooting and going out west.
I starting to think like alot of hunter in my area just let the cars and trucks hit them.
Now the farmers here will let you hunt groundhogs.
vvarmitr
06-08-2003, 12:15 AM
I never have much trouble getting permission to hunt. I start out asking for permission to hunt g'hogs & toward summers end I have enough places to hunt deer.
Well this is my last weekend off "til July 4th weekend. It's straight though till then.
I just got done cleaning up my truck and my wife car and had lunch now I am heading out to do some gorundhog hunting .
Talk to you later.

Heading to Gander Mtn. then after that to a cookout if they're having it. If not it's g'hog blasten time!:D
Did you go to the Gander Mtn over around Columbus just off of I70 ?
My buddy took me to that one a year ago so I olny ben at that one just one time.
I do need to get to Cabela's or Gander Mtn to pickup one more SKB gun case before my trip out west.
When I up at Cabela's they had a SKB two gun case for $119 did you see what they was a Gander Mtn?
IF not I may have to look up there number and call over there.
Well I did make it out hogging yesterday do to the wife wanted to go over to my 20 year old daughter and work on her yard and cleanup her flower beds, So we got that done now today I got to work down at my other daughters place she has a list for me to do.
I no one thing I am ready for that first trip out west.
I would go this week but I would be in the dog house for sure its my wife Birthday and are 28th Anniv on June 14th so I have to be around for that.
Well I got to get around today but I will talk to you later.

hntnfsh: Sorry, I forgot to mention muzzleloaders. :o Personally I'm not into them, but they certainly add a challenge the game. ;) Your story kinda sounds like some I've taken w/ a shotgun. :D
Rick: I didn't notice any SKB cases, but I wasn't really looking for 'em either. :( We have a Gander Mtn in Canton not to far off I-77.
I'm hoping to get out tis'evening w/ my 35Rem & see iffen it will kill a g'hog. :D If not I'll just throw it in the creek.  :D
Gotta go.
I was in to black powder about 4 years ago but then I got out of it to go deeper in to long range shooting that I love to do now plus take the trips out to South Dakota.
I am getting ready to take off for out there in two weeks for 2 weeks of shooting then come back home and go again in 6 weeks for 2 more weeks.
I called Gander Mtn in Canton and also Columbus and they don't have what I am looking for so I just maybe heading up to Dundee to Cabela's.
They had one two week ago but I going to call tomorrow just to make sure before I go.
I made it out tonight to hog hunt and I nailed 4 in five hours so that puts me at 37 groundhogs this year so far.
IF it don't rain tomorrow I may hit it again.
Also tonight I could hear less 2 coyotes in the background but I didn;t see them.
The one thing I have find out about this year the ticks are bad I pulled four off of me tonight after getting home.
I may have to start putting tick spray on myself before leaving to hog hunt tomorrow.
Well I will talk to you later.

I have always wanted to handgun hunt them more..maybe walk a creekbank or a tree line and see if I couldnt get a few close(within 50yds) I have a scoped Smith&Wesson 586 that I would like to try on them.
Nice gun !
I hit a hog with my 44mag at 75 yds two years ago.
But that was a lucky shot.

06-10-2003, 08:32 PM
75 yds. is long distance for you, Mr. Downrange? :D
I got a g'hog at 250 yds. w/my 6mm BR Competitor pistol once.
I know what you mean Smallie34. I wish I could get to use my pistol more often. I try to have a pistol w/me every time I go g'hog hunting.;)
Hitting a groundhog at 250 yds that good for some one thats not in to long range shooting.
Good Job !
I got out today to do some hogging and I didn't do any good, I think it may have had something to do with all the wind hear today.
Sounds like rain from now till monday lucky us !
O well I can get stuff ready for my trip out west that way plus get a buddy's 40cal ammo reloaded for him so he can pick it up before I leave.
My wife come home today from work and told me I would have to call off my trip do to the PD's have Monkey Pocks ! I told her I had just the thing for them and that was a 55gr V-Max bullet and I was still goiing if it killed me.
Will my shows on so I will talk to you later.

Coyote Kate & I got out tonite. seen a couple & got a shot off at one. Maybe because it was to close. :o
Tell your wife the Monkey Pox is from the PDs in pet stores. Another one of PETA's great ideas gone bad. :D
I keep telling her I am still going and I have just the thing for Monkey Pox and its called ammo 8000rds of it going along.
I know that she is just joking with me about it and she know that there is no stopping me from going.
I told her lastnight I am going to make on more trip up to Cabela's next week before I leave just to see if I need anything less.
Do to the rain and I had a guy drop off 1000rds of 40cal Pistol case's he wants me to load for him I haven't had any time to get back out coyote hunting.

Yeah, I know it's well pass April 15th, but my "x" just can't do her part. To the point that I had to take her to court.
Anyways, I finally got the paper work I needed to finish my taxes. HALLALUHAH!
I know that's kinda vague, but it's a long story w/ a happy ending for me & my family.
Get my return back & I'll be able to get my Marlin 218Bee. :D ;)
Well, I got to get going & I haven't read Steve's yet.

Flint boy: don't get that excited it won't be that much.
Don't tell me you're tired of your 45-70 single shot you have now?!? Maybe we could work out a deal? I buy you a Ruger#1 in 45-70 & you give me that old beaten up 45-70 that you have now. ;) :D
That sounds like a good idea about what to do with those pet PD's. We could have Rick come over & give us some pointers.:D :D

Rick in Ohio:
Just got "The Varmint Hunter Magazine", & you weren't in the members pages? What a let down. Do you want me to call & complain. They showed your 500yd shot, but not your 1000yd shot. Don't make any sense.
vvarmitr
Are you sure you see my name in that book?
I just look at mine and I can't find it any where but if you do see it let me know what page its on.

What I meant is that last issue they showed you w/your 500yd shot, but this issue they didn't put in your 1000yd pic' :(
Coyote Kate & I got permission last night to hunt the "Field of Dreams." There are so many g'hogs there you would think it was a PD town. Only problem is some of it is in the city limits.
See you later Bud'

Field of dreams thats good:) I have had a few fields that I stayed up at night thinking about.
vvarmitr
I now know what you are talking about now.
I sent my 1248yd shot in last summer and they told me it may take about two year before it makes it way in the book.
Now this last book didn't have every one names in but maybe the next one will and you will see it there in the 1000yd club.
Anyway I am on my count down before I head up to South Dakota to try for the 1500yd club and then if I have time and good weather I may try for a 2000yd shot if I am lucky.
I have got 38 groundhogs so far this year but do to me going out west I have ben trying to stay home to save ammo, but when I get back I will be hitting the fields again.
You guys have a good weekend and I will talk to you later.
vvarmitr
06-22-2003, 09:53 PM
Weekend? .......... What's a weekend? I should have been camping last night instead of working midnights.
Ran up to Gander Mtn today & put an 1100 on layaway for Coyote Kate. $350.00 not in bad shape either. She has been wanting one for crow hunting.
Well, it's off to work. Probably see ya Tuesday because we have to do the shift switch thing tomorrow.
Thats right what a weekend I start out with a 18 hour drive saturday and I will be poping the prairie dog by noon the next day.
Monday next monday if the weather is just right I will be starting to setup one of my rifles for that 1500 and 2000 yard shots I going to try and do this year then back to poping PD's again.
One thing good about this years trip it sounds like its not going to be as hot as last year when it was a 116* in the sun and I was trying to do the 1000yd shooting.
This last weekend I was over on at a range in Columbus, Oh doing some shooting with my buddy thats going out west with me my wife and daughter drop me off and went shopping over there they pickup a new digital camera so I can take lots of photo's of my shooting in SD, So if I can get this think working right I should have all kinds of photo's when I get back.
The got me the Fuji 3800 digital camera if you like to know.
I use a 223 for crow and coyote hunting myself but there are times I pull out the 22-250 to do the job.
I just sold a 1100 two weeks ago that I got just last year and never used didn't even fire one shot out of it before I sold it.
What Gander Mountain did you go to ?
Well I got to run I have a list of stuff to do this week before I leave so I will talk to you later.
I will check back in after bit.
vvarmitr
06-24-2003, 09:10 AM
I went to the Gander in Canton, it's not to far away for a homeboy like me to go to.
Let me know if that is a good camera. Coyote Kate & I should probably get one. Oh yeah, I want to see lots of pictures!
What is it w/you western Ohio boys buying guns & never shooting them? I got a friend in Lima area that buys all these guns & never shoots them. Next thing I know we're swopin' & tradin'. That dosen't happen on the early sun side of Ohio. Over here we have good used guns & guns used good. :p
Quick somebody dial "Whine-one-one"
They're talking at work that we might be working the July 4th weekend, & quite possibly straight though till Sept. I'm thinking about taking the week of the 7th off, but we don't know what we want to do? This is the first time I've worked long enough to get vacation, plus have someone I want to go w/, & have enough $ to do alittle something. I use to think a paid vacation was getting layed-off & collecting unemployment. :( I haven't just seen hard times; I've lived them. I guess I'm whining w/my mouth full. :o
Hey , I'm praying you have a blast next week. ;) I hope Smallie34 & Catfish fill in for ya while you're gone er I'm a gonna miss ya real bad. :(
See ya later.
O I use my rifles all the time its just right now I have them all pack away for the trip out west.
Hey I talk to catfish just last week and he told me he is doing a lot of corn hauling right now and hasn't had time to get on here.
I seen him at the Shelby County Deer Hunters meeting last Thrusday.
He told me he would like to find time to do some cat fishing.

06-25-2003, 09:15 AM

Do you do any shotgun hunting of any kind?
Good Morning !
Hey I don't know he maybe hauling corn squeezins !
That samething I may have to ask him next time.
I can't remember the last time I shot a shotgun that why I made my mind up to sell all of them.
Well I am trying to get stuff done around here this week so my wife don't have to deal with it so I will talk to you later.

I get home last night about 12:00AM & my one step-daughter meets me at the truck. Oh boy what is it this time? She said she brought the dog out & she just took off & that is her barking in the distance. It sounded a ways off & that she was barking treed. So we grabbed the leash & my large mag- lite type wannabe flashlight & headed for the barking. Here she was not even a 100yds off baying in the cornfield. The 'coon might have lived if it hadn't taken ahold of her leg.
Anyways she had that 'coon bayed for about a 1/2 hr. I'll say one thing that dog has GRIT! :D
Talk to you later..............
vvarmitr
Hey do you meet up with catfish at the Lima gun shows when they have them ?
I have gone to 3 or 4 gun shows with him last winter 2 in Lima.
vvarmitr
06-27-2003, 12:10 AM
Rick: you got to remember I'm the guy who doesn't travel much. Lima is a 4 hr drive from here. It's all I can do to get to the gun shows around here. If it weren't for jcdflint I would hardly get to one. :o That would be to cool if we could all meet up someplace sometime. Like maybe around Columbus. :D
I just put in for my vacation starting the 7th of July. Coyote Kate & I are going to see how much g'hog hunting we can get in.
vvarmitr
Hey I am over in Columbus all the time my one buddy I go out west with live just about in Columbus.
He is off work today getting ready for the long haul out to South Dakota, me and him are going to try next monday to do are 1500 yard shooting and the buddy from Michigan is going to try a 500yd shot .
We will be doing this in Pierre, SD at the VHA then Tuseday move on west to White River, SD to start in on the prairie dogs.
By the way the weather map has ben looking out in SD we may just have pick the right week for long range shooting but as you know the weather can change from day to day but right now it telling me the wind will be under 10mph the hold time we will be out there.
Well I got things to do today before I leave so I will talk to you later.
I also will check back in from time to time today to.
Later !
vvarmitr
06-27-2003, 08:55 AM
It could only be you to get a week of low winds in SD.
Just a thought, but if it were me, I would be out there before light & before the wind kicks up. Have everything set up & ready to go for when that first SD/LD/PD * shows up you have perfect conditions or as good as it will probably git. IMHO ;)
*For the uninformed SD/PD/LD stands for South Dakota/Long Distance/Prairie Dog.
I was talking to a buddy at work & he said he had 27g'hogs so far. This is a guy I had to help w/his 22rf to get it sited in. He said he has shot them all around the buildings on the farm where he lives & that the farthest one he shot was about 75yds. He says the hay fields are covered w/em. So you know what I did? I gave him a couple of permission slips forms for the farmer to sign & he gave me a map to the farm.
Now if I get permission from the city & this farm I'll have one barrel burnin' vacation. :D
Gotta go, I have work to do. Later.
We are leaving tomorrow morning for out there and should be in Pierre, SD sunday morning so are plan is to setup the rifles then go check in for are rooms and get some sleep so when monday morning rolls around we will be ready to do them shots if the weather will let us. Then move on west about 75 miles to this other ranch and start blowing up as many prairie dogs as we can for the next 8 days.
Sounds like fun don't it !!!!!
Hey you have fun with the groundhogs !
Well I have some packing to do and the bank to hit up this morning so I will talk you later or when I get back.
Have a good 4th of July.
I know I will !!!!!!!
vvarmitr
06-27-2003, 09:17 AM

Coyote Kate & I when to the field of dreams tonight & we each hit a g'hog w/the help of our new "dog gone good" shooting bag. Still haven't heard anything from the Mayor about the rest of the fields. Took the 22Hornet to get a 17 Ackley Hornet barrel put on it Tuesday eve.
vvarmitr
Hey I made it back from South Dakota and man was it hot but I had a boat load of fun and killed a hell of alot of PD's.
I didn't make the 1500yd club this time out do to all the wind.
The first day I was there was the only day we had low wind that I could have made that shot but after the 18 hour drive out to SD with out stopping to sleep I was just not ready, but anyway after I got some sleep I killed less 500 PD's a day.
We shot from 7:30am to just about 10:00pm every day for just about 3 weeks, I shot a boat load of ammo on this trip and why I did the rancher put us on some new land he just got and there was prairie dogs as far as you could see.
We may go back out to SD this fall to try are luck at 1500yds shooting.
Well now that I am back I got a big honey do list so I better run but I just wanted to let you know I am back.
vvarmitr
07-20-2003, 01:28 AM
Glad to have you back! :D :D :D
Not getting much time on the computer.
My vacation went well. Coyote Kate got her first 4 of the season & I'm up to 36.
Got some nice stuff for the garrit (reloading room). Power strip. cordless 'phone w/ a hands free piece, an intercome, a nice drill, an armless office chair w/ rollers, & a window fan.
talk later I'm getting pretty tired.:o
I am happy to be back it was a long hot trip and I am cook from staying out on the prairie shooting from 7:30am to just about 10:00pm every day and it was in the 100's just about everyday.
My buddy call yesterday asking when we are heading back out, I told him I had to do some cleaning on the rifles and I wait till after my daughters wedding and I will be on the road back out to SD for 2 to 3 weeks more.
I going to try the next time out one more time for the 1500yd club if the weather not so windy.
Today I am cleaning guns I have 2 done out of 6 that I took then get my brass ready to reload.
Well I going to get off of here the storms are moving in so I will talk to you later.

07-22-2003, 11:11 PM
Rick: sorry i'm not getting back to you like I use to.
Went to Amish country tonite. Took Coyote Kate to dinner & then went to the guy I got my dog off of.
Hopefully tomorrow I'll be blasting some g'hogs. Maybe I should clean my guns some day.
Goodnight Rick boy. :D
Thats ok vvarmitr !
I have been getting my rifles cleaned up this week from the trip plus this is fair week and I have ben going out there with the wife and grand daughter.
The guys ask me this late weekend if I was ready to go out west again and I had to tell them do to my daughter's wedding come up here in about 6 weeks I had better wait till after that to go so I thinking we may head back out after that again.
I am still hopping to make that 1500yd shot this year plus I don't want to get bit by a snake before this wedding or that wouldn't be good.
I would be in the dog house for that.
I am also thinking about picking up a new rifle to take along if we go.
I may try out a new Savage in 223 stainless steel.
The grand daughter calling for me to get her up so I will talk to you later.
vvarmitr
07-23-2003, 10:34 PM
I don't think you can go wrong w/ a Savage. If I were to get one I would get that new trigger w/it . I've heard that it is excellent.
Don't get out g'hogin tonite but I did get some brass work done. I'm trying some 6 1/2 Rem. primers in my 222 instead of the 7 1/2 Rem's. See if they don't shrink my groups some. ;)
Talk to ya later.
Good Morning vvarmitr
I work on brass all day yesterday and I got all of it resized that I shot out in South Dakota now today I have to clean lub off of it plus look it over really good then on to the next step.
I do still have ammo loaded up to do one more two week trip so after my daughters wedding I am out of here.
I maybe taking a trip up to Cabela's before my daughter's wedding just to get a set of snake boot and just to look around.
I may hit up the Dayton gun show this coming weekend to look at some new rifles plus pickup the stuff I need to load some hand gun ammo for a guy, he want 40cal Glock ammo loaded up.
I have his brass ready.
Well I have the grand daughter here this morning and she just got up so I better run for now but I will be check in off and on all day long so I may talk to you later.
vvarmitr
07-26-2003, 04:18 PM
Well, instead of going to the active topics first I'm writing you. Seems by the time I get done there something comes up & I have to get off the computer.
I going to start doing some of my brass work at work when I'm on midnites & afternoons. It'll make the time go faster & give me more time at home for the reloading part.
I didn't get out hunting this whole week. I'm on day shift too.
I got the 17 Ackley Hornet barrel on the Ruger. I'm hoping to get to the range Monday morning to see if everything is okay. If so, Coyote Kate will have her a g'hog poppin' gun. I did get her a 12ga 1100 & am now looking for a shorter butt stock. (a youth/ladies size) If you are going to that Dayton gun show tomorrow & you see one would you be so kind as to get an address, 'phone#, or e-mail address? An 11-87, or 870 butt stock will work just as well. They are innerchangeable.
Talk to you later..............

Sorry my kids has me going here and there every time I turn around now days with this one daughter wedding coming up here before long and the other one wanting me to do stuff at her place. I retired to do alot of shooting but any more it looks like I should have stayed at work.
Yesterday my one older daughter and my some to be son inlaw wanted me to pull there boat up to the lake and its looking like today also.
I planning tomorrow to wire her blazer up so they can do that them selfs here before long.
This is there first boat so I am show them around and helpping them load and unload the boat and they are coming around with it.
I did make it to the gun show yesterday but it wasn't all of that this time, I was looking for a 223 Savage in stainless steel to rebarrel to 17 centerfire but I did see one Savage in the whole place not even I used one, and the bullets I was wanting I didn't see them at all so I will have to order them.
I hopping to find time to maybe run up to Cabela's to look for a Savage and maybe some other stuff if I take this trip back out west here before long again, but before I do I have a list of stuff to do around here first.
I did get all my brass resized and setting at the bench.
Well I have a boat to take to the lake so I will talk to you later.

Buddy, you better start slappin that trigger cause I'm up to 40 as of yesterday. While you were away poppin pasture poodles I was hunting the Field of Dreams. Between Coyote Kate, JCDFlint, & myself we took out 39 g'hogs from there.
The farmer I hunted on yesterday was gettin' on me for not being out. I told him I was working 7 days a week & that I got this field close to home (F of D). He couldn't blame me for hunting the other place being alot more fun. I told him I hunted it because the guy needed my help more than anything. Beside if I come out here I might see a g'hog since I've put such a hurtin on their population. Needless to say I took off hunting to appease him. After I shot the 4th one he show up to rub it in that there weren't any hogs to shoot. Then he showed me where he had sweet corn planted & told me to help myself when it was ready.
I just love varmint hunting!!! :D
I am hopping to hit the fields today after dinner so I will keep you posted.
But right now I have a honey do list to do but when I leave home to do that list the AR will be going along for the ride.
Talk to you later.

Man, I'm having a heck of a time getting time to be on here. I even got this weekend off & I haven't even went hunting.
I just found out that my title isn't available for my Suburban. It's a long story, but I haven't killed anybody yet. In fact I'm handling this the American way......... I'm getting my lawyer!
I was finially able to buy that 218 Bee in a Marlin 1894CL "Classic" & the cool part is that there is about 200 rds loaded & ready to go. Now I need to figure out which chronograph I want & order it. Maybe I should just shut up & go blast some g'hogs. In 2 weeks things should be better.
Talk to ya again soon......I hope!
vvarmitr
I am like you any more can't get out to groundhog hunt.
I keep saying I am going out but with my daughter's wedding coming up they are keeping me moving.
I took my wife up to the road house tonight to eat in Lima and she ask what I was planning on do after the wedding and I told her my one buddy from Michigan ask if I wanted to go out west for a long weekend to shoot prairie dogs again and she said that would be ok with her so I calling him in the morning to start are planning to go.
I have alot of ammo left over from the last trip out so I ok on that end of things, and I am hopping to still make that 1500yd shot this year.
Today I also got 500rds of 22-250 brass from a guy for $40 bucks not a bad deal.
I am hopping to get out this week to hog hunt and I will keep you posted plus some picture if you like.
Well I am going to turn in for the night so I will talk to you later.

I called my buddy up in Michigan this morning and told him it up to him if we go out to South Dakota this fall to shoot , my other buddy from Columbus is not going this time do to he thinks it not going to be any good in the fall shooting PD's.
I have ben doing some check with some guy on varmint dan's wed site about fall shooting and they are telling me it better and alot cooler than July weather, plus you will find alot more days with less wind, so I maybe able to hit that 1500yd mark I am wanting to do.

I can't believe it I have 4 guns in the house that we haven't even shot yet! :o :( I'm gonna hafta attend to business & get to the range. ;) :D
Well Rick, whats your body count now on the g'hogs. I'm still at 40.
See ya later buddie................
P.S. What is it that you are trying to tell me. My brain is fried.
I am still at 38 hog's !
But I am trying to get rifle all ready to heard back out to SD at the end of September for 3 days of shooting this time.
Still hopping for that 1500yd plus shot this year.
IF the weather was like yesterday hear in Ohio in SD with very little wind I could have made that shot.
This next trip out to SD will be a bit longer do to I have to drive to Flint, Michigan to pickup that buddy and head out and still make that drive in one day.
Well I have the grand daughter hear so I will check back in later.

You sure are blessed making trips to SD & Cabela's. Me, I'm lucky to make a trip to the bathroom...........ooh that reminds me, I gotta go, no pun intended. Well, maybe a little. :D
My wife told me lastnight this was the last trip out west for this year.
She also told me I could go some where with her this winter but the rifles have to stay at home in the gun safe.

08-12-2003, 11:44 PM
Hey, I do get vacation. Coyote Kate is on Christmas break. I can't take my guns either. I figured if you went I would have someone to talk varminting with. ;) :D JCDFlint has been there twice & may go w/ us this time too. If you want to know more about it pm him. he says it's great. And probably a lot cheaper than Hawii. Think about it.

Rick: I can't find you or is that you under that huge "honey do" list?
Coyote Kate & I are headed to the range tomorrow morning. I can't hardly believe it we have 4 guns that we haven't even shot yet.

vvarmitr
08-18-2003, 07:27 AM
Boy, you better get back into g'hoggen. I heard some farmers complaining the other day saying that if you didn't start getten out there & bustin some g'hogs that they were going to run you out of Ohio on a pole. :D
At least that is what you can tell the wife. ;)
I may have to try that.
What did you think of the targets I sent you?
vvarmitr
08-18-2003, 07:39 AM
They're as they should be......great! I was surprised to see the AR shot so well.
I had some work done to the AR.
IF I can get alittle free time today I taking the 22-250 back out I send you that target.
vvarmitr
08-18-2003, 08:09 AM
Yeah I got to get going before the wind & the mirage pick up. Just had to stop & torment you guys while I had a chance. Bye now.
vvarmitr
I haven't ben on hear to much do to getting ready for my daughters wedding and reloading for South Dakota again.
I leave in 3 weeks right after my daughters wedding.
I am hopping the weather cooler and not so much wind this time out so I can try some 1500yd shots.
IF I get that shot pulled off I will have my buddy take a picture of it and post it on here.
I got to get back to reloading talk to you later.
vvarmitr
08-28-2003, 11:21 AM
Man, I begining to wonder if you went on the honeymoon w/ them. :D
I got the weekend off for Labor Day. :D Maybe a few more weekends after that.
Picking up my dog this weekend & still don't have the kennel built. :(
No I didn't go on there honeymoon we still have 3 weeks to go before the big wedding then the week after that I am gone, heading to SD for some fun.
I have ben working on reloading plus having to look after my other daughters baby or the grand daughter.
She makes it hard to do anything around hear.
Man you better get that dog some place to stay before you go picking it up or you will be on the floor and the dog will be in your bed.
vvarmitr
08-29-2003, 09:12 AM
Well, I didn't know where you went? I was kinda missing ya. :(
Not only is the dog coming, but she is due to have pups in Sept.
I do have a dog house for her. I just wish I had the energy to get the kennel going. They're saying no more working weekends for awhile. However, we did have a lot problems this week, & didn't produce much. So who knows about next weekend, we'll find out Thursday.
Gotta tell ya this....... Monday or Tuesday my Mother-in-law called & said that the neighbors across the road called & asked her to concact me & tell me that they had the hay off & that there are g'hogs all over the place.
I gotta go torment some of the other guys on the other posts. :D
Sounds like you have a kennel to build and groundhogs to shoot this weekend sounds like fun.
Why are you on hear I be out waiting on the hogs to come out this morning.
I think we are going to be going up to the lake this weekend.
vvarmitr
08-29-2003, 11:32 AM
To tell the truth I'm pooped & I don't have my 4x4 rig on the road. It's a loooooooong story & it is stressing me out plus other things right now, just not work. You probably don't have enough cheese to go w/ all the whine I have now.:( :o
I'm on here to laugh, listen, learn, & share & I don't have to think about the other crap.
Hey I found alittle time today to go out with the AR and I am about ready to head to the farm.
Hope to nail a hog or two today.
I got to get going on this you maybe ahead of me on hog shot this year.
I am still at 38 !
vvarmitr
08-29-2003, 11:55 AM
I'm at 40 not counting Coyote Kate & the dog. :D
Good shooten buddie!
Rub it in !
I have to see what I can do about that.
I am out of hear talk to you later.
vvarmitr
Well I took off for the farm to hunt groundhogs and the weeds was to high right now so I tried one more farm and then it started to rain just my luck.
O well I try again maybe this weekend.
vvarmitr
09-05-2003, 07:47 PM
Man, I could have sworn that I posted here on the third?
I got 4 more g'hogs Sunday, got my new dog on Saturday & she had pups on Tuesday. Bought a 98 S-10 Blazer 4x4 w/53k miles in mint condition last night. Found an 11-87 Special Purpose 3 1/2" used @ Gander Mtn for $470. I called & put it on hold, now I have to get up there & put it in layaway until I sell my 870 Super Mag. We are back to working the weekends again & tomorrow I have to work a 12 to boot.
I was off over the weekend because our monitor took a poop & we had to get a new one.
One of the g'hogs I got Sunday was just shy of 14 pounds. It was a whopper. 4 shots....4g'hogs & 2 of them stretched the outer limits of my 222.
Gotta go talk to you later.
OK go ahead amd rub it in !
I try and go out but each time I try we get rain and we don't really need any more of that.
Well we are getting to the last week hear before this big wedding and things are getting crazy and I will be happy this is over and all of the bills are paid for.
Plus this week my Ohio buddy that I go out west with all of the time with is trying to change things around on me and the other buddy up in Michigan so it sounds like we are going to put are foot down on him and tell him he go's with us at the time we set or he stays at home.
I really don't want to do that but its coming to that hear really fast.
I am hopping to get back on to hog hunting when I get back from out west the farmers should be just about ready to start taking stuff out of there field by then with any luck.
Well I got to run talk to you later.
vvarmitr
09-09-2003, 09:17 AM
You're darn tooten I'm rubbing it in while I got the chance. ;) The way you took off this spring nailing g'hogs I figured that there was no way I could keep up w/you let alone past ya. So I'm figuring I better enjoy the lead while I can. :D I thinking also that I might be able to maintain this lead because you will have to come out of retirement to pay for the wedding. :D Either that or send you out to hunt more PDs. ;)
Gotta hit the hay, I'm working a 12 tonight(7pm-7am  ), & maybe the rest of the week. :(
vvarmitr
The wedding this weekend and then I have a week before I leave for South Dakota and by then when I get back the farmers should be just about ready to start taking stuff out of there fields, then look out my count will go up then.
I will be out everday just trying to pass you up.
There was 3 of us going to SD but yesterday one drop out so there is just 2 going now.
I called the rancher yesterday and he telling me they have had super weather for long ranch shooting so I am hopping it will be the same when we get out there.
I sure would love to make some 1500yd shots this time.
He also told me the snake are bad to !
His wife kills at less 2 to 3 a day just in there yard.
Will I am off to go looking for a new rifle.
I have a brand new 12x42x56mm NightForce scope laying hear and not a thing to put it on. Now thats bad !
Talk to you later.
vvarmitr
09-10-2003, 10:28 AM
Knowing what I do of you it would only take you a day to catch up. Then you could go job hunting.:D
Save your money. I have a 22-250 that we could put that scope on. I could break it in for ya. ;) :D
Did you get your big gun yet or is that why You have the scope laying around?
Later Dude:
I went out yesterday to check on my new rifle that I order in the spring and my buddie that is a dealer said he check on it the first of this week and it should be in any day now.
So after I get are pool closed today I am loading about 200 to 300rds up for it and I with every thing going on here I may have to wait till I get out west to shoot it.
No I can't shoot that many groundhogs in one day they are not like a prairie dog.

You are so humble, buddy. I'll tell you what, if you could see the "Field of Dreams", you could probably double my score in one day.;)
Got the weekend off, might go to the gun show in Medina.:D
Plus I hope to get some more g'hog hunting in. (I'm not going to make it easy on you)
Later bud'
Man you are right you are not going to make it easy on me but I will try when I get back from SD.
The wedding this weekend and everything is crazy around here today.
I just had to go outside and cut the grass just to get away from it for a bit.
Talk to you later.

Well, are you still alive, are you still sane? Did big macho Poppa cry? ( you don't have to answer that one) Just to let you know you where in my prayers. ;)
Coyote Kate, Flint, & I went to the Medina Gun Show Sunday morn. Mostly a waste of time. May even be the last one I go to for a long while. You'll get better deals at retail shops. Cheap military stuff out the arse. Oh well!
Didn't get out hunting at all. I'm on afternoons this week so maybe I can get out in the mornings.
Later Buddy.
Yes I am still alive !
I got my daughter married off this last weekend and had alot of fun.
Now we are working on returning stuff and trying to get checks out to pay the bills for it, and we are just about done there.
We are also dog setting for there dog now along with the one we have and some time thats not good news.
Anyway my daughter and new son inlaw will be back thursday night when I go pick them up then its time to start getting stuff around to head out next week for SD and PD blasting.
My buddy in North Dakota e-mailed me tonight saying its gets down in the low 30's at night now out there and day time 65* to 70* so its cooling down a bit.
Sounds like really nice shooting weather and maybe we will not see so many snakes this time. Anyway I have a new pair of snake boots I will have on.
Well I am turn in for the night so I will talk to you later.
P.S. When I get back from out west I will be working on the groundhogs so you better keep on nailing them.
Hey vvarmitr
I just wanted to let you know I now have 41 groundhogs as of today.
Today my wife wanted me to take some stuff back to the woman that made my daughters wedding cake, so I loaded up that stuff and I also loaded up the AR to take along.
On the way out to drop stuff off I nailed 3 more groundhogs.
How many hog have you shot now?
Just asking so I know how hard I have to work to catch up with you.
Later.
vvarmitr
09-19-2003, 08:25 AM
Well Rick, You can take your time trying to catch up w/ me. I'm back to 7 days a week. They say we going back to 4-turn, but how soon, I don't know? I got so much to do I haven't been posting.
Come to think of it you are probably slaying PDs right & left right now. :D Hope you get 1500yd shot done.;)
I'll catch you when I can.
Good Morning vvarmitr !
Thanks I am hopping to make a 1500yd shot.
Well I got my daughter married off and she is back from her honeynoon so now I am starting to pack stuff up for my trip out west.
Are 3 day shooting trip was going to be just 3 days of shooting and now it has turn out to be 6 days now plus a day to drive out and a day to drive back home.
Now if the weather is super nice that may change to we may stay longer.
My wife told me to go have fun and the guy from flint his wife told him the same.
I hope to have a load of picture I can send out from my trip.
Well I am making lunch so I will talk to you later and don't work to hard.
You think of me out on the prairie when you are at work.
Talk to you later.
vvarmitr
09-26-2003, 08:51 PM
Hey Rick, I got my VARMINT HUNTER MAGAZINE & your smiling face is in the members section.
vvarmitr
Good Morning !
Well I made it back from South Dakota.
IT hasn't a fun trip this time, we found out when we got out there that the state of SD had ben spraying out there to kill off alot of the prairie dogs and they have had about a 95% to 100% kill with that spray.
The area's we shot at in July where was not one PD in it so we look around and we was lucky to have shot 75rds between us in 3 days so we headed back home.
We didn't do any long range shooting do the the 35 to 40 mph winds so like I said we headed home.
We stop by a store in Lowa to look at copper rifles and after looking at them I just maybe in the market for for one.
I will keep you posted if I get one.
Yes I seen my picture in the VHA magazine.
vvarmitr
09-30-2003, 08:39 PM
Man that really stinks! I thought that they weren't suppose to poison the PDs? Did the rancher give them permission to do it?
Why in the heck do you want a Cooper rifle? I can't believe you. Just kidding. :D What wild & fancy caliber are you going to get it in? Where in Iowa were you that you seen the rifles?
Good Morning vvarmitr !
The state sent all the rancher letters saying you are going to do this big poisoning program or they are going to come in and do it for them and then send them a bill for doing it.
We stop by and talk to 6 to 8 ranchers and they said just about the same about it so we stop by a county office to see and they said the same as well.
So its on the way !
I am wanting some kind of 17 cal .
Cooper has 6 to pick from and they are
17 HMR
17 Squirrel
17 Ackley Hornet
17 He Bee
17 Rem
17 Match IV
The buddy I just was out west with he has the 17HMR in Cooper and its a real nail driver, but I like one that I could reload ammo for.
I am looking at a Cooper Montana Varminter in 17 Match IV.
The store we stop by was in Des Moines, Lowa along I-80 and you can see it from the highway and its called Sports.
They had 6 Cooper rifles there you could look at but they would not pull them out of the glass case less you are really going to be buying one.
The price tag on the ones the had in stock started at $1200.00 and went up to $1800.00 I didn't have that kind of money with me so I did get to hold one.
So what have you been up today ?
I have ben getting stuff done around here so I can hit the fields around here for groundhogs and other varmints, plus thinking about where I going to go next spring to PD shoot.
vvarmitr
10-03-2003, 08:40 AM
I was going to post you the other day & just as I got here Coyote Kate needed the phone. So I'm posting to you first before I go any further. :D
Did anybody say why all of a sudden SD wanted rid of the PDs?
Just really seems odd.
Coyote Kate has a 17Ackley Hornet & I'm thinking along the lines of a 17HeeBee or the MachIV. It will totally amaze you what these little calibers will do.
Out of desperation I have been pushing myself to get the kennel done. A big problem w/me is I don't build like a carpenter, but more like a furniture maker. I try not to be to fussy, but that is the only way I know how to work wood. :o
So I'll catch you when I can.
IF you ever seen a big big PD town you would know why the rancher want them gone. There are wholes every where and the rancher cows can brake there legs in them plus there are alot of rattle snakes around them towns.
As I am getting older I am finding that I like the small bore rifles more and more.
I told my buddy that was out west with me me a week ago I think when I hit that 1500yd mark I going to give up on the big bore rifles.
I am taking off here in two weeks if the weather nice and head to lllinois for some varmint hunting with a firend over that way, he telling me he can set me up with some long range varmints.
So if the weather nice I may head that way next.
You better get on the Kennel before the weather turns to snow.
My buddy up in Michigan got a 1" of snow yesterday and I was told Wisconsin has had 6" or ready.
Well I have to make lunch then I am heading out to do alittle groundhog hunting.
Talk to you later
vvarmitr
10-04-2003, 02:45 PM
I can understand the plight of the rancher, but I don't like the use of poison. Plus they are loosing tourist $. I don't know........ whatever!
The small calibers diffently have their place. I look here in the near furture for some gun company to come out with a centerfire 17cal, or maybe a 20cal. I've heard guys complain that they are a pain to reload, but I never had a problem, & I have large fingers. I think they were just to use to the big game cartridges.
Gotta run see ya
Good Morning vvarmitr
The 17 cal ammo is alittle harded to load but I had found out its not all that hard if you just take your time on doing it.
This is why I like to work up loads in the winter time and then load alot of them that way I don't have to do it all summer long.
I am working on reloading now for myself and some firends.
I have to load for myself 4000rds of 223 plus 500rds of 22-250 ammo, then I have two buddys that drop off brass yesterday for me to get ready by spring for them.
They have about 8000rds for me to do in 223 243 and 22-250 plus the one buddy going to bring over 2000rds of 222 for me to load up.
I got my work cut out for me this winter, so you know where I will be must of the time.
Hey its going to be nice this week so I am hitting the fields for some groundhogs.
So you better look out !
Hey I would think the Lima gun show would be starting backup some time soon are you going to it this year ?
MrFurious
10-06-2003, 09:11 AM
Hey I would think the Lima gun show would be starting backup some time soon are you going to it this year ? [/B]
Lima gunshow dates:
Oct. 4-5
Nov. 1-2
Dec. 6-7
Let me know if you guys will be attending and we'll meet up. I havent' made it over to one in a couple years now.
MrFurious
Well it looks like I didn't make this one in Oct but I think I may hit up the next one MrFurious.
I can meet up with you at the next one if you like.
I like to go on saturday mornings what day would work for you ?
I also see if I can roundup catfish to ride along to.
Rick
MrFurious
10-06-2003, 11:27 AM
Saturday morning would be fine for me. We can either meet up a the show or beforehand at Bob Evans or something for some breakfast. Have a month to figure it out, so no rush.
I'll see what Mal has going on, maybe I can drag him along if the wife will let him out. :D
Sounds good to me !
I got to run I cutting grass so I can hit the fields after dinner tonight for groundhogs.
Talk to you later.
vvarmitr
10-07-2003, 09:36 AM
I've given up on gun shows. The tables don't have any deals unless you want a bunch of old military crap. Once you paid your $5 at the door it takes the bargain out of the stuff you did buy.
Latety I have gotten some good deals on used guns at Gander Mountain. Yeah, it surprised me too.
Later.......
vvarmitr
You are right about the gun shows any more but I like to buy primers and powder at them, that saves on shipping and that UPS dum $25 dollar charge on shipping.
I some times see some less some time but not all of the time.
I headed out to the one farm lastnight and the farmer see me and walk out to say hi and talk to me, by the time he left it was getting alittle dark and all I could see was deer all over his field.
He told me to go ahead and shoot them to if I wanted to but I told him that would be call poaching with a varmint rifle, he said in his book they are just like a varmint.
I said I can't do it as much as I like to. There was a very nice buck in that group to.
Well I got alittle stuff to do for the wife and then I have to order a mother load of reloading supplies for all of this brass the guys drop off later week then after lunch I am off to the farm.
Talk to you later.
Hey vvarmitr !
I have ben hitting the fields I am now up to 48 groundhogs and 8 coyotes for this year.
The farm I was on yesterday the farmer was taking beans off and the groundhogs was out I nailed 6 just yesterday and then at dark I got one coyote when the farmer's tractor light got on a coyote standing in the field. There was two but I just got one !
I was hopping the rain would hold off one more day but its not sounding good for today.
Talk to you later.
vvarmitr
10-14-2003, 09:52 PM
Way to go Buddy! And you say you got 8 coyotes! I have yet to get one.:( :o I see them okay it's just that I don't have a gun in hand when I do.
Good News! We are going to our old 4-turn schedule, & we are getting the first 4 day weekend off. :D
Saturday I'm going to a squirrel dog field trail. That will take most of the day & then I can g'hog hunt for the next 3 days & re gain my lead. :D
Gotta go.........later
vvarmitr
You will have to do like I do, I keep a rifle with me at all times in my truck " Lock & Load " and when you see a coyote along the road stop and shoot it.
Back about 6 weeks ago just before I took off for South Dakota I shot one along I-75 out of the window of my truck, I wouldn't have done that if there was alot of car on the road at the time.
This weekend Dayton has a gun show and I may go to it then if it nice and the fields are dry I may do some hog hunting.
This is a good time of the year for groundhog hunting they are eatting like crazy to store up for winter.
Hey you have a good one this weekend I know I will !
vvarmitr
10-21-2003, 08:54 AM
I wish that was applicable for me. Coyote Kate is a teacher so me can't guns in her car. Where I work says that there are no guns allowed on the property, period. Sure "outta sight , outta mind", but if they have a brain fart & decide to check cars, or get in a pissin match w/me I would loose my job. I would be one of the main guys they would check if they really wanted to find guns.
The only place I will not take I gun on is school grounds !
I had my AR in the truck last weekend when we was at chruch and this morning I was at wel*mart and it was they.
I have ben working on groundhogs, I am now up to 50 so far !
vvarmitr
10-22-2003, 11:46 AM
I was hoping they would get the beans off the Field of Dreams, but no such luck.
On Savage Shooters, how about your opinion on shoot bags & rest onthe shooting range forum.
See ya..................
The farms I ben hunting on they just got done last week taking the beans off but now I am hopping they get to there corn now and if they do that it will open the fields right up for some long range shoot of groundhog if it don't snow first.
I don't use a rest or shooting bags at the range myself but I do shoot off a benchrest Harris Bipod and on the rear of the rifle I use a Accu-Shot "Monopod".
Do you use a rest and bags ?
vvarmitr
10-24-2003, 08:42 AM
Off the shooting bench I use a rest & bags, but in the field I use cross sticks or my "doggone good bag."
Wow, were the g'hogs out Wedsday!:D I got 2 of the 3 that were out in this one field. I had my 218 Bee leveraction w/ me. 2 of them were together @ 75yds & the other one was to my left a little bit @ 60 yds. I was on the right side of an oil tank w/ the drain valve in front of me. I put my hand on top of the valve, took a deep breath, & did my best imitation of the "Duke."
Bang! schic-schic. Bang! Schic-schic. Bang!
I got the first one, missed the second one as he decided to run just as I was squeezed the trigger. Nailed the third one as it sat at its hole. Then I thought of you & how you would have gotten all them w/ your AR 15. ;) I saw 4 more, but couldn't connect. The trigger is real heavy. A couple were just to far for the 218 Bee. :( That was the only time I got out on my long weekend.
vvarmitr " Thank You " for thinking of me when your out hog hunting. Anyway nice shooting !
I didn't make it out this weekend my wife had me loading boxes up and moving are daughter back home. She found out the hard way just how hard it is to make it out there on your own.
Now me and her mother are having to help her out on her bills so the banks don't start taking stuff away from her like her new car and stuff like that.
Now that the weather is changing I starting to get on my reloading a bit when my wife don't have anything for me to do.
I am triming brass today !
vvarmitr
10-29-2003, 11:03 AM
I'm off today & tomorrow. Hopefully I can get out there some.
Later buddy!
I know what you are talking about.
I have a 20 year old daughter that act like she is 12 year old and we ben trying to move her back home for the last 4 weeks now.
We just about got her move in as long as we stay on top of her.
All she thinks about is running all night long a sleeping all day so I have to look after the grand daugher till my wife gets home from work to be able to do want I want to do.
Plus I trying to keep from blowing my top about what I have to do around here and the grand daughters mother just sleeps.
Thank god my other daughter not like this or I take a gun and shoot myself. I am getting gray hair fast now days !
Hey you have fun and I will talk to you later Buddy !

Well, I did get out & I got 3. One is a really dark almost pure black one. I'm thinking of having it mounted. The guy I want to mount it wants $175.
Sure got my exercise lugging them around to take home to the pups.
My rifle, Jerry Lee, never ceases to amaze me. That 222 just keeps hitting'em. Almost as if they were heat-seekers.
Hey thats funny about your heat seeker 222 !
I have never had anyone say anything like that about there rifles.
Not much going on here .

I know it sounds funny, but you know how sometimes just as the sear breaks you pull the shot. I've done that a couple times & I still see the dust fly & hear the whup. ;) I got a g'hog at 300 yds w/it though I'll not try that again. The 40 gr poly-tipped bullet failed to fragment. It just doesn't seem to be able to miss.
NO, it's not for sale! :D
Everything is for sale if someone offer you the right money
Right !
Now whats your price on it ?

Why do you ask me such questions so early in the morning? :(
Now I have to think about something I've never thought about.
Of course I'll want more than the rifle is worth.(just like gunshow dealers LOL )
Another reason I can't sell this rifle is because my youngest daughter got her first 3 g'hogs w/ it. Cool Huh! :D Got pictures & everything.
Hey Rick: what would you think about coming over this summer & spend a few days g'hog hunting w/ me. We could camp out. I really don't have the room at the house yet to put someone up, but I've got plans for that. We could meet up w/ the infamous Flint. He might even let you shoot his 17Rem. that shoots 500yds. You don't happen to have a laser range finder you could bring, do you? lol
My 870 sold yesterday so I'll be getting my 11-87 soon. :D
Later buddy....
vvarmitr
ITs fall now ! but I would love to come down your way maybe next summer for a weekend to groundhog hunt with you.
Can I bring a buddy along ?
IF you don't have the move for two we could get a room some where.
I am hopping to have a new 17 centerfire by next spring.
I am looking in to getting a stainless steel Savage in 223 then have it rebarrled to 17 centerfire from a guy up north about 40 or 50 miles from me.
I would have it now but me and the wife just put a load of money on windows for are home and we are still waiting to get them in, so I told her I would wait for the new rifle.

I know it's fall that's why I said next summer. :p
You can bring a buddy along if you have one, but it will divide up the shooting more. & if you think I'm going to be the guide & sit back & watch you two shoot then I'll have to charge you what I did when I had the g'hog hunting guide service. :D
I was thinking w/ you being retired & all that you could come over when I have Wedsday & Thursday off. I only get one weekend a month, & it's a 4 dayer. So I only get 3-4 a summer & they can get pretty precious.
I guess mainly I was thinking you & I would just get out & blast some g'hogs & take it easy.
What kind of 17 are you hoping to chamber it in?
Hey it can be just me and you next summer.
I am not sure what I want to chamber it to that why I am still checking in to it plus I have all winter to get one.
I will have to look you up on the map just to see where you are at from Dayton, Ohio.
Do you know how far that maybe off the top of your head ?
vvarmitr
11-06-2003, 01:03 AM
That maybe better than a 3hr. drive.
I look you up on the map after talk to you last and I would say it could be a 3 hour drive but thats not all that bad.
I could come over you way next summer.
Do you have alot of hogs over your way ?

Sorry I haven't got back sooner. Been hunting :D Still seeing g'hogs out yet. That's amazing to me. If I could shoot an October g'hog I was thrilled, but I'm seeing g'hogs on a regular bases now. I got one last night. If I could get home a hour earlier (I'm on dayshift) I could be shoot a lot more.
As for the g'hogs population, I'm living in the g'hog capital of the world. Honestly though, we have a good amount g'hogs here.
I will have to plan coming over some time next summer and groundhog hunt a day or two if everything go's ok here.
Right now are 20 year daughter that just moved back home is driving us nuts. She told me off a week ago and just lastnight she told her mother off and I would say she is starting to ware her welcome out here, but bad thing about this is my daughter use's the grand daughter to by saying if I move out you will never see your grand daughter again.
I think my wife is getting feeed up with the whole thing now, I know I have ben for about 3 weeks now and I keep saying it going to be a long winter this year.
I kind of give up on groundhog hunting for this year less the weather gets nice again for a day or two.
I got 51 this year !
I clean my truck up and put a coat of wax on it over the weekend so it ready for winter, so I have just about give up on the hogs for this year like I said.
Well the grand daughter wanting to play so I better run.
Talk to you later and don't work to hard.

Got another one last night. that brings me up to 48 I think. Should have had another one, but I seen him to late. :(
Hey Rick maybe you could see a lawyer & see about getting custody of your granddaughter? You can always return custody once she has straightened herself out. In the meanwhile send her out to the school of hard knocks. It fixed my arse. I'm not saying turn your back on her just let her lye in her own bed!
I can tell you this she is finding out what hard knocks are and if she don't stop here before long and find a job she not going to have a car to run with firends.
She don't know this but me and my wife have talk about take the car away from her and putting it up for sale if she don't go get a job. This will slow her down and she will find out what kind of friends she really has.
Anyway have you seen anything on the new 204 varmint rifle Ruger is coming out with ?
ITs a new 20cal V-Max bullet in a 222 case with a Muzzle Velocity of 4225!
I may wait on getting a 17 centerfire and see about one of the 204 ruger's when they come out.

I hadn't heard about this. Where did you find out about it?
Man, you're always on top of things!
I seen it posted on go go varmint go two weeks ago so I started checking the ruger website and they have a little bit about it.
Sound like the 204 will hit the market around March just in time for spring PD hunting and groundhogs.

So this is where you two have been hiding. Wondered why you've been so quiet on the other boards the last week or so. LOL
That new Ruger 204 round sounds real interesting. My only question is how long will it take the round to filter over to the other gun makers? You know the prices will be jacked up this year with Ruger being the only one offering them.
I have ben to the other website this week 3 or 4 times but there is just not alot going on.
How are you doing on it ?
I am sure Ruger will have big bucks on that new 204 plus it will be hard to find the ammo like it was with the 17 HMR.
I was at the Dayton gun show saturday and my friend got 17 HMR ammo for $8 bucks a box so it starting to come down really slow now.
I would like to see Savage come out with that 204 round myself.
Thats a hot little round I think.

The big thing w/ Ruger is will they even get them out. I haven't even seen the new double barrel yet. Probably the only reason they got their 17HMR out was because they were going to be left behind if they didn't.
If that case is on the 222Mag case, brass is going to be a problem.
I wouldn't be surprised if Savage came out w/ the 204.
I wish they, Savage, would come out w/ a 17 centerfire.
There is always a problem with brass when a new rifle hits the market.
I was looking in to getting a 223 Savage in stainless and having it rebarreled to a centerfire 17 but then my buddy up in Michigan has talk me in to waiting for this 204 to come out,so I am waiting to see.
Remington has a stainless steel 17 coming out but I here its going to run around $900.
The bad thing about Remington is I have 3 buddy's that got new rifles from them and they are have grouping problem so Remington is out for me.
Myself I think Remington rifles are going down hill like Savage did years ago.
MrFurious

I couldn't agree more with that Remington comment. The Model 710 is nothing more than a throw-away gun with its press-fit barrel. yeah, its ment to be a cheap alternative to the Model 700's, but its proven to be a major downfall for Remington's reputation for quality.
I also don't like how cheap they make the 870's nowadays. The Wingmasters still have nice wood and a good finish, but the Express models feel as cheap as a Daisy BB gun IMO.

Rick: DUH! If you get a Savage you can have any caliber you want. Just get another barrel. You could have a 17WhizzBanger & a 204 or better yet a 18VVMC.
I have ben talking to the guys up at SharpShooters Supply
about doing this to a Savage but I just nned to make my mind up on what I like to go with.
I am not sure if I really want to get in to this wildcat rounds.
MrFurious
11-24-2003, 07:32 PM
Wildcat! Wildcat! Wildcat! Wildcat!
Ok, now ya know where I stand. :D Actually, I think I'm going to go with Fred's "Hotrod" round, unfortunately he won't tell me the secret of it until I buy the barrel. LOL I do know its based on a .284 case thats cut down and necked for either a .20 or .22 caliber bullet. Either way, my first introduction into handloading will be with a wildcat.
I think why I am slow about jumping right in there on this wildcat rounds is I have seen to many of them blowup at the range I shoot at.
I am sure what it is the guys loading them way to hot.
MrFurious
11-25-2003, 12:45 PM
yeah, for some reason people often translate wildcat to mean "lets get stupid". A lot also aren't able to recognize the signs of high pressure on their cases when palying with loads. Althought I haven't even tried reloading yet, I've talked to Fred enough that I feel I'd be able to recognize some of these signs.
I have a friend down in Dayton thats just getting started in to long range shooting plus reloading and he has talking about getting a wildcat rifle, I told him thats one thing I would wait on till you can get on to the reloading then down the road if he wants to do that then go for it.
He loaded 12 rounds up the other day for the frist time and wanted me to come down and go to the range with him just in case they blowed up, so I did and he did ok with them I think.

Mr. Furious: As your friend & probably a direct pain in the arse, I wouldn't recomend that you start out your reloading career w/a wildcat. It could either kill or cure you of reloading. If you want to reload start w/ your 22-250. You don't start drivers training in a race car & I wouldn't advise starting reloading w/a wildcat. It's alittle more involved that loading standard calibers & a lot more expensive when you make a mistake in time, money, & emotions. Those shells that you spent hours on become like jewelry & if you spend all the time that is really needed they become your children. Then to make an inexperienced mistake can have you pulling your hair out. Not saying that it can't be done or you can't do it. I'm just saying it's biting off alot to start w/. My 2cents.
