There must have been some Fall turkey hunters out this morning, the deer were moving everywhere. Just after ten a.m. three does came from my left, headed high over the ravine, and this doe walked right underneath me. The Zippers have been hangin' on the wall and I've been shooting this hand-me-down 55# pawn shop special that I refinished and put a new string on. First for the longbow and first stone kill......
About 16 feet fairly vertical, caught one lung, liver, and paunch with a pass-through that she broke off. Heavy poplar shaft, goose fedders, reinforced self-nock and 145 grain flint head. She went about 100 yards downhill from me and around the point. All quartered up and on ice as I type this. Nice morning, cool and foggy. Gonna have to get me some jerky mix.:bouncy:
WTG Zip and a rock head at that! Nice fat doe!

Thanks all. Hoot, I must have hit a big artery somewhere, it was the tip of the lung and the tip of the liver, nasty holes though. I wish I could knap, maybe someday. Those 3rivers tri points are expensive, but they're tough.
Give me a price on an obsidian head, Hoot. Or figure out something we could trade. That stuff is scary sharp......

excellent!!!
congrats.
I've been learnin to knap for about a year now. It's not an overnight sensation. When I kill one with a knapped head, it must be knapped by me for full effect. :mischeif:
I've learned there's lots of chert in Ohio. I plan on harvesting some in about a month. ;)

Hoot, I'm about a stone's throw from Mully, down here in Shadyside. We should have a knap-in down here sometime, I've got a buddy who's way into it, + we've got some good chunks here.
Would enjoy seeing it done........

His points ain't all that great, Hoot. Believe me.. I need them thin enough to haft well. He made some out of a commode and we call them Krapper Napper points.:shhh:
I got in the stand last night and it rained pretty steady. The walk out was quiet, crunchy going in. It was Snuffers and my Chartreuse POC's. Made about 10# of jerky tonight out of that sweet doe. Cabela's Sweet Hot mix. Back out again Friday afternoon I hope.
Mully - will have things ready here soon. We'll trade up fedders and do a bowhunt. Get yer RW's out.
Thanks guys, for your kind words. Big thumbs up to those of you who took time to post.

hoot,
I'm gonna be almost an hour south of flint ridge, at least part of the time but I plan on doin 'some hunting' on the AEP land in Muskingum Co (not far away).
Do you and Mully have cell phones? My # is 252-333-7990. Maybe we can meet up someplace and beat some rock? perhaps on a Sunday?
I hope to make a good haul of rock and I've been told I'll need a 2lb copper hammer or mallet to get good spalls. Should I invest the 30bucks for one or no?

when i go to dig flint , i take hammers , shovels , and a few asorted prybars , and a spud bar . the man that opens the holes where i dig , sells flint .. roy miller ,, and i think when he finds the good stuff he covers it back up . and leaves the crapie holes for us poor people without backhoes.. lol
would be nice to go somewhere and meet and knap a littl e. or just dig some flint . will stay in touch . do you have a place to dig up here? hoot

You mean it's not just layin around to be picked up? :D
No I don't have a spot to dig. I kinda figured/hoped I could find enough along the drainages to get me by. Kinda new to this stuff.
I'm hopeful we can meet up and visit for a bit. I got a lot to learn about rocks.

:yikes:
oh, yeah. I'm a little hard a hearin on the left side. :coco:
I might be able to get outta here and drive up there Halloween day but I'm for sure countin on leavin here by the end of the week.
I want to for sure stop by Coony's camp and meet him and other internet friends ... maybe Nov 3rd or 4th.
Right now I'm leaning toward going from Coony's up to the north side of Avondale for a few days. That will be my best and closest position to meet and hopefully get a primer on Ohio flint. I'm just learnin this flintknappin but I think I'm gettin a good understandin about sum things.
I have until Thanksgiving or later ... unless I tag a big one. Then I'll be rapidly on the move. :coolgleamA:
what you think?
